I took the liberty of making a Spotify playlist with some synthesizer greats. No, it's not collaborative, sorry!

I'm 95% certain that Scott Walker track linked to above is played by a real string section(and maybe some brass as well), not a synth.

I think this thread needs more Monkman:

Francis Monkman - The Achievements Of Man
Francis Monkman - Readout
Francis Monkman - The Long Good Friday

And one of the greatest TV themes of all time -
Stewart Copeland - Theme from The Equalizer

No synth there, but there's some gruesome pads in The Electrician. And then some real strings later.

I think John Carpenter might be an unsung master of synth composition... with pianos and stuff.

The Fog theme (daaaaamn)

And of course, his music from Halloween, etc. and The Thing--which was done by Ennio Morricone but is probably an instance where one of the greatest creators of film music is making something Carpenteresque rather than producing Morriconeqsue work. Which kind of says something.

Aw yeah. This was the first song you hear in Bronson. Perfect.

EDIT: Shit, I just remembered my Thundagadome thread. Whooooops.

I've been listening to this album Wish Upon a Blackstar by Celldweller. It's a cool fusion of EDM and various styles of rock and metal with a bizarre sci-fi concept. Well worth checking out.

This is brilliant stuff.

I noticed 1UP did an article about the 'magic of FM synth' that seems relevant. Some good tunes there.

Also there's this.

Most of these instruments on this album could play one note at a time, except the Mellotron used in "Franz Schubert" and what sounds like a fully polyphonic string/organ synth in the title track.

Now I'm learning German and looking up how to work as an American in Berlin. Great.

Ultravox hasn't been mentioned, their most famous track is probably this one.

Dizzy requested i put up a Washed Out track, so here it is.

Also, can't believe no one's posted the genius John Maus! edit: lol oh wait i did already

Also Tim Hecker!

Molly Nilsson

Contemporary composer, a genius with electronics, Max Richter. The synths are mostly textural/background in this track.

...is pretty much fantastic and those album covers are gorgeous. We could have whole megathreads discerning and quibbling over IDM (unfortunate name for the genre) or ambient melancholia. When I listen to The Disconnect, I feel like I'm gliding over a neon cityscape during the night.

I assume all of you have heard the Hotline Miami soundtrack, right? Because if not, what the fuck are you doing? Seriously.

Anyway.

Lifelike - So Electric

College - I Think About It (Keenhouse remix)

College - Can You Kiss Me First

Miami Nights 1984 - The Getaway (and they splice in "The End" at the end of the video too)

edit: How could I forget Mitch Murder? For more, go here. Nearly every song is good.
