So the deal with Kase-san is that the series is continuing as a new story called, appropriately, "Yamada and Kase-san" and will be the unicorn yuri serial where the couple of interest isn't still in high school.

I got an itch to read something about RIGHTEOUS PUNCHING but I can't remember what chapter of Sun Ken Rock I was on before all the dubiously-legal scanlation sites took it down.

Someone recommend me to something about HUGE MEN who divide their time between extolling the importance of being DECENT AND VIRTUOUS and BEATING THE HOLY FUCKOLY out of assholes less decent and virtuous.

No high schoolers with feelings please.

Brutality level is high, righteousness level is also considerable. Has really goofy cartoon villains for blackly comic relief.

In the first chapter Kenshiro "God of Death Yan Wang" Kasumi, the main character (who is also a gentle college lecturer,) is ambushed at dinner by gangsters with guns, whom he kills by drumming the table with his hands while shouting ATATATATATATATATATATATA until the silverware flies up and stabs the gangsters to death.

went back to the strip to refresh my memory and found a line that is instructive: THIS ULTIMATE MURDEROUS FIST IS MORE TERRIBLE THAN AN ARMY OF TEN THOUSAND MEN.

FWIW the last few chapters of SKR are a chore to read.

I made it to right after Ken and Bau Phong (am I spelling that right prolly not) fought. Where Ken's right hand man was acting all SUSPICIOUS.

Somebody* seems to be scanslating the new issues of Shimanami Tasogare as they come out, rather than waiting for the collective volume to come out next year. Two chapters up, today. That page abruptly tilted 90 degrees after the protagonist's crush mentions his discomfort with gay people and a forgotten tag-along girl is the one to speak up and tell him to shut up, hot damn.

*"gay anime yay", which compensates for the cringe of that name by at least being an openly gay male group?

Thanks for mentioning this, I would have missed the new chapters completely, for some reason they showed up at the bottom of the chapter list.

Galette 2 is out! There's some interesting stuff in there, and my name's in the big page of supporters, which is kinda cool.

AAAAANYWAY scanlators put out ch 20 of nanashi no asterism and some of this chapter's story seems...familiar

Just as a by the by, people are pissed about NnA as it was axed before the author could wrap up anything really and instead decided to end on a "and everyone grew out of being gay" note. so there's that.

I read Planetes vol 1 because it got a lot of sugar in the Top 50 Comics list. It was alright. Certainly highly accomplished craft, and very likable characters/premise. And it is very, very nice to read a mango that doesn't have any fanservice. But it completely lost me with regards to Hachimaki's interior conflict. And the back half of the volume drops almost all the other characters to focus solely on him and his unclear issue. I don't know if it was translation thing that made it so muddled or what, but I never really got a clear understanding of what was driving his determination/space vs human connection conflict or how his various hallucinations resolved or perpetuated it. It all felt pretty forced.

Ah well, certainly nice drawings of spacesuits. And I'll check out volume 2 if it comes across my path.

So, so glad I can finally read and recommend Delicious in Dungeon without having to go to some scanlation site.

Seven Seas is putting out the original Go Nagai Devilman manga.

I am very, very pleased.

(Kodansha's also re-releasing Battle Angel Alita in new editions. Hooray! I've never managed to cobble together the early volumes.)

I am very happy about this, although I just finished buying the Kodansha bilingual releases, like, last month.

Hopefully this version doesn't include Shin Devilman, which really screws up the pacing.

Smutty porno and freaky auterist art comics have a long-standing relationship in just about every market, it seems.

Euro and Japanese porn comics kept the lights on at Fantagraphics for most of the 90s.

Also, for good or ill, Devilman is chock full of Go Nagai's raw id and contempt for society's vices and inhumanity. It's gross, violent, hypersexual, and psychosexual. It's filled with equal parts condemnation (of humanity's sins), frustration (towards a society bent on a spiral of corruption) and hope (that it's not too late to change course), and it uses extremely graphic imagery to get its point across. It's not a manga I would recommend in any way (and Devilman Lady and Devilman Grimoire make it look family-friendly), but it's fascinating to see how Nagai deals with his, ahem, demons and how he lashes out at his contemporary culture so unabashedly.

I would prefer Vertical to handle it, since they tend to understand the ethos of the problematic material they publish, and handle it accordingly. But Devilman's prurient side kinda... fits right in with Seven Seas too.

Seven Seas publishes so much stuff that I'm struggling to even think of which comic BEAT would be referring to here
