I don't think I'd enjoy ACVC as an independent piece of music, but it sure is funny.

Spoilerpopping in case people can't stand amateurish analysis of humor:

I can't decide if "Bustin" or "Annoyed Grunt" are my favorite songs. On the one hand, the Tim Allen mouth noise segueing into the Down With the Sickness mouth noise in "Annoyed Grunt" is one of the most inspired things I've ever heard, but "Bustin" takes lines from the Ghostbusters theme and lines them up to sound super suggestive ("let me tell you somethin", "freaking ghost, baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah! etc) and contains the line "if you're all alone, let me sleep in your bed." Also bustin' being a reference to orgasm throughout the whole song is amazing.

I probably have to give it to "Bustin." Freaking man, baby, indeed.

honestly the brief stint of mario paint sounds in annoyed grunt is one of my favorite moments in the entire trilogy, but bustin is just brilliant, endlessly quotable, and a wonderful desecration of an incredibly kitschy song

of course, i'd also say there's at least three distinct kinds of songs and it's hard to compare between them. like, i think bustin' is better than no credit card and they're both better than wndrwll, but i couldn't say if i like bustin', mullet with butterfly wings, or numbers more than any of the others, since they're not really similar in concept or execution

actually i can't decide even between floor corn and mwbw, they're both too perfect for this world

I'd be hard pressed to say whether No Credit Card or Bustin is better. They're both beyond brilliant.

Wndrwll and Mullet with Butterfly Wings both earned the dubious honor of completely replacing the originals in my memory

I think No Credit Card gets points for being sincere. It seems like the impetus is a joke - reorienting the original song around a line Huey Lewis seems to sing with a weird amount of conviction. But the result is a sublime maximalist banger.

Bustin, on the other hand, can't help but layer on the irony. The first verse is tight, but then second verse starts doing amusingly stupid stuff - with the fictionalized Roy Parker Jr. running out of words halfway through, and jumping into the chorus a bar too early. It's great, but it feels like more of a novelty.

I can understand that. It functions as a joke, but as a song... I get it.

The esteemed Mr. Cicierega released some tracks that got abandoned and didn't make the cut of the final album, they transport us to nightmare scapes without end.

Man Piano:

God Says Relax:

Don't:

Avril:

Man Piano is okay and then the full house theme returns and it is good and might have been able to fit into mouth moods
Don't is fucking beautiful and I'm going to listen to it again right now

the others are just ok and I can see easily why they were the leftovers

i love roxanne.mid but it's a bit low-concept
don't is a little hard on the ears admittedly but i love the way i get this image of drunk tired people singing the wrong song
god says relax and avril are fine but a bit unremarkable, maybe about on par with mouth pressure (which i don't care about much)
man piano i actually kind of dislike. at least until the full house stuff

Unfortunately we already have the definitive midi version of Roxanne.

[Shame about the framing, though]

The only thing that stops me from listening to these albums more is they get the original songs stuck in my head. Smashmouth in this context is hilarious, but still, argh.

I don't think I'll ever be able to hear the intro to Stairway to Heaven without wanting it to be No Scrubs, though, and that is a plus.
