Brian Eno released a new album on New Year's Day. While I wouldn't say it's his best work, I do think it hems closest to his original aims with the genre: music to give space and think. Fans of Eno or ambient ought to give it a listen.

He also released it in app form as a "generative version" that gives potentially infinite music, but I'm not ponying up $55 for that!

And it's a very happy birthday to Keith Shocklee, of the legendary Bomb Squad.

My favorite undersung Bomb Squad production is the one-album wonder Son of Bazerk:

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a good album.

I have it on good authority that he played it left hand but made it too far.

Station to Station and Low are also excellent albums.

I've been listening to the Xenogears arranged album Myth and finding it pretty decent... Mostly I'm just astonished that it got made. And, uh, wow, I forgot about the English lyrics to the ending song. Maybe the prime example of a song that seems exotic and heartfelt in a foreign language and just sounds like garbage when you know what they're saying. Anyways, the album's fine, Creid is way better, but still.

(Can it be that we have never made a thread for talking about arranged albums of game soundtracks??)

The new xx album is really damn good. Incorporating more of the sound Jamie's been developing in his solo stuff pays off extremely well.

Lo little sampson gave me this album FOREVER ago, (HI LITTLE SAMPSON!) and I loved it when he gave it to me too, but over the last two weeks or So I've listened to The Monitor by Titus Andronicus way more times than is probably healthy. You can listen to it too here's the officially youtube playlist.

I think the thing that strikes me most is just how angry this album is. I know, punk rock & anger WOW WHAT A SHOCKER but there's something here that just feels visceral and raw and mean that I just find utterly captivating.

It reminds me of Andrew Jackson Jihad in that way. The sort of folk-ish Lo-Fi sound for kids who haven't been "Kids" for awhile that are genuinely pissed off at the world.

(it is kind of annoying how like most of the songs on it are really two songs that just sort of lead into eachother on an 8-minute track tho.)

The only thing that makes this album less than perfect is that it has maybe one too many songs that follow the "start slow and soft then get hard and loud" formula. It's still one of my top ten albums of all time, though.

I love songs that slowly build into a MASSIVE FUCKING CACOPHONY but, I totally hate how like half of the songs are really 2 songs just sort of contained on one track.

Take Four Score and Seven for example, which is a track that lasts 8 fucking minutes.

But it's not an 8 minute song! It's two songs! Four Score and Seven Part 1 ends at exactly 3 Minutes and 56 seconds! It has a final note of a long mournful trumpet, getting softer and softer. Then the second song starts, which is much louder and faster basically feels like it's it's own separate thing.

And the album does that like 5 fucking times! And don't even get me started on The battle of Hampton Roads which last 14 minutes.

It's a really minor complaint but it's kind of annoying to have to skip to the middle to listen to the song I wanted to hear.

I bought a bunch of Bowie albums about a year ago that I've been slowly working my way through about an album a month. This month's entry is Tonight, which is pretty different from the stuff I've heard from him to this point (chronologically) and also really good.

it's definitely got a few v.good tracks, but this is where he lost the plot for me (with a few track-by-track exceptions) until Blackstar.

Queen II is probably the closest Queen ever came to out and out prog music save the debut album, and is probably my favorite album as a result? Honestly kind of a tossup between this and Innuendo.

After disappearing from music completely and then going country for a while, Michelle Branch is putting out her first rock LP in 14 years. First song's pretty promising!

Haven't listened to the Einhander soundtrack for a while. This is still one of the best game soundtracks that nobody talks about.

That was my dad's favorite Queen album and he was a HUGE fan. I'm partial to it, especially The Fairy-Feller's Master-Stroke.

For my part, I've always been a A Night At The Opera and A Day At The Races kinda guy. (Although I quite like it all.)

=-=-=--==

In other news, the new Mastodon stuff is pretty damn good.

My top Queen album is always neck-and-neck between Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. And I swear it's not just because Ogre Battle is on Queen II...

+1

Michael McDonald's feat. with Thundercat didn't do as much for as I'd hoped, but this is banging:

New Blanck Mass album is streaming over at NPR.

If you're not familiar with Blanck Mass, it's solo stuff by John Powers of Fuck Buttons, and it's very much in that same vein. The new album kills.
