That Super Metroid Rotation run was pretty baller. Highly recommended if you're a SM fan.

Yeah, I've admittedly been a little reticent to watch this anymore after I found out about the stuff with Big Jon and a bunch of other stuff.

Apparently Big Jon got kicked from doing GDQ runs for holding up a copy of Mario Golf at the end of one of his last ones?

Big Jon was banned running from further events because he flashed an NES game cart on screen (US Open Tournament Golf, I think?), after one of his runs at SGDQ 2015, to try to jokingly drum up support for a golf game speedrun. For like, three seconds. All his run requests for AGDQ 2016 were rejected, and when he arrived at AGDQ 2016 just to attend, he was repeatedly harassed by GDQ security.

All of this happening to one of the few black speedrunners? What a surprise!

They'll show a four-hour run of final fantasy but they won't allow a single fucking golf game?

The people who call the shots for the GDQs are not big on transparency, so they usually don't comment on things they do at all.

Following from the above, submitted runs often seem to get approved or rejected on their collective whim.

I think that GDQ is currently going through growing pains, caught between the lordship of a small but loyal nerd fiefdom, and the ambition to be a big deal Event that garners respect, attention, and money from far more influential persons. (See also: Penny Arcade/PAX)

Nerd fiefdoms are typically run by overreacting to minor aggressions such as pressing one's case for an unpopular game, while letting major aggressions such as making death threats to staff and attendees go with a slap on the wrist. *ahem* I expect that this year, they're closer than they've ever been to having to decide whether or not to make the transition to an Event, with all that implies.

(Ironically, proper Event planning will leave us more susceptible than ever to those god damned console JRPG speedruns in the short term, but perfection is an impossible ideal.)

...

I loved yesterday's DOOM 2016 run! Did anyone else catch it?

I've watched more runs during AGDQ 2017 than ever before, I think. The Quake run was both amazing and nauseating to watch - literally, in that I felt queasy for a few minutes after it was over.

So far all I've watched is the Shovel Knight Race, which was great, and Super Monkey Ball Adventures, which was entertaining garbage.

Mike Uyama, who founded the event, has had "mono" since 2014, presumably due to this very existential dread.

Hello, please don't believe all the dumb drama you hear. Take it from an inside source. People that were banned were banned for good reasons. So far there has only been one ban that wasn't earned and was immediately rescinded only to have the kid immediately start unplugging marathon computers.

Thanks for this. Every time a GDQ happens, there's far too much negativity surrounding the whole thing.

A certain runner that people mentioned in this thread scammed the marathon of about $200 of registration costs over the course of two years. I know that's small potatoes in a charity event, but that's the furthest thing from fair to all the other participants. There is so many people trying to play victims when they break rules and unfortunately the same bs comes from those guys and get eaten up by the masses because drama is an attractive thing.

I agree that drama will always exist wherever clashing egos do, but I would also argue that GDQ needs to do a better job of managing drama by committing to policies of transparency, communication, and consistency.

Anyway, Mighty Number 9 did make a pretty good speedrun game, and the runner did a good job of making it look practically effortless, but everyone in the main speedrunning thread was spot-on about the unfunny potshots and eyerolling commentary.

I highly enjoyed the Final Fantasy run and the Super Mario runs yesterday. The speedrunner's commentary during the Kabuki Quantum Fighter run was nothing short of fantastic, and the Gauntlet run was pretty great, too.

Not sure what is up with the guy stroking his beard for a half-hour straight in the audience last night, but hey, he gave us something to talk about while waiting for the next run.

Condescension and silence are not effective or reasonable ways to avoid controversy? Don't be an idiot?
