True Confessions time:

I wrote a bunch of questions to Allison on twitter asking for Desmond to come back or when he'd come back. Or why haven't we seen more Desmond...

He never seemed keen on bringing the guy back. But I guess I wore him down.

I regret nothing.

No way, man, Desmond is great. He squirts ink if you mush his cheeks together!

Desmond was pretty fantastic in Scary Go Round. His blend of naive sociopathy bounced well with the rest of the cast while he maintained enough of an inexplicably alien nature to simply not fit in at all. Unwillingly being dragged along on all the undersea voyages and having an perpetually uncertain origin.
Also he introduced us to Shauna.

But being NEW Bobbins seems more about the encroachment of Middle age than curiously amphibian individuals who may or may not be adults suddenly coming into inheritance, Desmond seems a poor fit. I feel like his return could have been better as a Shelly Winters Mystery in the vein of THAT, or MURDER SHE WRITES.

Also "We put him in the ground, it was a very boring day" is kind of harsh. More of a Po thing to say than what I expect of a slightly more cultured seeming Desmond. Unless he is putting on a bold front to cover his heartache and loneliness.

Good Job on solving the mysteries of his Origin, Charlotte and Shauna. Too bad that was all incinerated!

Desmond's petulant, pouty resistence to learning or appreciating anything never fails to make me laugh.

I haven't been super into the latest Bad Machinery case until today when I read it from the start. It has a lot more moving parts than any of the previous cases, I think.

I started off kinda cold on this story, but it's grown on me a whole lot. Even though there haven't really been any supernatural happenings!

somehow I completely missed the connection in Bad Machinery that Mimi was Elodie's sister and we met her in the Scary Go Round arc where The Boy goes to France.

anyway, all y'all haters on this latest arc can suck it, I've really enjoyed Mods vs. Rockers.

I think... I think I'm actually ready for a Linton-centric arc now, he's been MIA for too long.

I looooove Learning to Fly, currently running at Bad Machinery. Ryan and Shelly in high school being adorable and becoming friends, can't beat that with a stick

PROTIP: "trans" is an adjective, and it's rude to refer to people as adjectives. See: "a female," "a gay," "a black," etc. Much better is to say "a trans woman" or "a trans person."

he gets better! That's my favorite bit of "The Case of the Forked Road": it demonstrates how Ryan and Amy helped each other grow up

I know that saying nice things about John Allison and Expecting to Fly is old hat at this point, but... goddamn did I love today's comic. It wasn't even funny, it just made me extremely happy.

I feel like I'm missing a large amount of context here. What was the joke?

There is no joke. Read Expecting to Fly, it'll make a lot more sense.

Alison has been putting out comics about these and other characters every weekday for 16 years, but the context for that panel only requires you to read the last month or so. It starts here, go read it it's great. And if you like that he has many many more stories waiting for you.

I feel like Scary Go Round/Bad Machinery's subtitle could be 'Tim ruins everything with his science forever'

Bad Machinery is making me sadder and sadder, gdi

The only thing keeping me going here is the knowledge that things turn out very happily for Ryan in the end while Tim and Shelley continue to fuck up

Bad Machinery ends.

Of course, comics will continue in the Bobbins-verse, but our plucky mystery solvin' teens are on their way out.

John Alison can make comics about whatever he wants and I'll read it. Hell, I've been loving his recent strips that are just an ad in the back of a comic from the 1960's. Good for him for being brave enough to change things up again.

Huh. I mean, obviously I'm not going to stop reading Allison's stuff after - what, 15 years? But I guess I wish he hadn't ended Bad Machinery in such an unceremonious fashion. Expecting to Fly has been really, truly great, so it's not like I'm worried things will get worse, I just figure the mystery kids deserved more of a sendoff.
