I was thinking the same thing but with more swearing at the "genius" who created the LMD. (I guess he was too busy writing a self-congratulatory song to bother...)

Also, regarding your second spolier - they need something to do in the back half of the season. (Since when did mid-season "finales" and hiatuses become a thing?)

I'm gonna call shenanigans on referring to androids as LMDs when they aren't decoys for anyone.

Fine, fine. It only happened because that's what people were speculating about before the thread actually got going in the series.

Well, I for one am looking forward to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: LMD next half season. A shame they're finally getting into the cool weird stuff in the last season

Okay, NOW it's okay to call them LMDs.

0.8 average in the demo (0.7 on Tuesday*), enough episodes in the can for syndication, new shiny Inhumans series over the horizon...

ABC's "tipping point" drama for renewal this year looks like Once Upon a Time, which is doing much better ratings than SHIELD. The time slot has something to do with that, but a show that moves to 10 PM in its fourth season is usually one destined for the chopping block.

I dunno, maybe they move nights again / go to a shorter season or something? There's just not a lot of room for a higher-budget one hour drama that can't pull ratings in the 1s, even on ABC.

* - More or less replacement level ratings for a big four network, although probably a bit better than that because 10 PM is tough.

It's all but official. The death knell would be if they stopped promoting it, though, which I don't think has happened YET.

SHIELD's only chance for a renewal - even a limited one - might well be that the rest of ABC's dramas have fucking cratered around it. Conviction and Notorious are both DOA, Secrets and Lies isn't much better, and Quantico is on a short leash.

I dunno, it's still kinda impressive that SHIELD managed to hang on for four years in spite of a constant audience death spiral. You never saw that type of thing in the old days - networks used to be a lot more ruthless.

But ABC killed Nashville last year for doing 0.9s at 10PM. Even though SHIELD is in-house, I don't think getting 70% of those ratings is going to find favour.

I imagine Marvel has enough influence with Disney/ABC that if they saw Agents' continued existence as being beneficial to the MCU, they could push for it to be allowed to keep running where a similar show not attached to a multi-billion dollar cash cow would have been given the axe. (Or maybe that's what has already happened in order to allow it to limp along for four seasons of unimpressive ratings.)

If it had been canceled at the end of last season I would have thought it well-deserved, but I'd happily take another year at the current level of quality. I think the show benefits from the switch to tighter, half-season themed arcs (they feel a little like televised TPBs), and I'm a sucker for "anyone could be an impostor/enemy agent" plots so I'm actually pretty pumped for the upcoming LMD arc.

It was never going to be canned after season 3 - it's worth more to have a poorly performing show limp through season 4 than the savings from cancelling it, because you make it back in the syndication package.

The only time before this it was in any danger at all was at the end of S2, and back then Disney thought it was needed to set up Inhumans so cancellation apparently wasn't seriously discussed. That's also the year where it wound up finishing in the top 25 series on the air through some strange machinations, because it still bled something like two million viewers over the course of the season.

I still don't get why they're being so conservative. GR seems to have mostly worked, so start bringing in more characters on that level! It's not like there's a shortage of them.

It's almost like this kinda thing is literally what viewers wanted all along, or something!

You mean that people don't care that Disney's pissing contest with Fox has resulted in the Inhumans being shoved down everyone's throat for three years running?

Mack's distaste for robots comes off more like racism than I think they might have intended.

Yeah, I mean it was just a lot of lampshading but it ended up really heavy-handed. But whatever, mostly I'm amused that the very shotgun-axe mentioned in Torzel's previous post from a month ago shows back up in this very episode.

I had thought they were revealing too many "secrets" too quickly for there not to be another twist in this LMD arc, and there it was at the end of course. Now the lurking question becomes, are there other replacements we *don't* already know about. Damn LMDs making everything suspect.

Do people in these shows / movies never learn? If you're trying to kill someone with superpowers then make sure that they're actually dead. Don't just shoot them in the gut and dump them in a lake somewhere.

Isn't that the same damn plot they've been doing since the beginning of the series!?

Also, are they trying to cram all of their plot ideas into the last season or is this one just as overstuffed as the previous ones? I'm just not sure anymore...

I'm starting to think they might get at least a short season next year. Ratings aren't dropping anymore, at the very least, and I don't know if ABC has anything that'd get a guaranteed 0.8 at 10PM.

They might even get a small boost now that they've got a CW DC show as a quasi-lead-in again (albeit the weakest of the four).

Never listen to anything I say. Ratings were down to a 0.6 this week, officially below the ABC mendoza line even at 10PM.

I don't want to sound crazy, but I think this arc of the show has been... pretty good.

I don't think Agnes looked like she was hours away from dying for most of that episode.

Nothing crazy about that, I've been digging it too. This entire season has been a huge improvement over the last. I'll be sad if this show gets canceled now that it seems like it's finally gotten its shit together.

Well. That was an intense episode.

Digging how this arc is increasingly driven by and focusing on women.

(Now for a hopefully brief interlude in WTF-alterna-land.)

Yeah, that's where my "hopefully brief" comment came from. Exploring wacky alternate timeline where I guess Hydra took over because Coulson wasn't in SHIELD or something could be fun for an episode, but I hope they keep it to just one or two... oh.... oh, well, I've just looked at the scuttlebutt online and evidently we're getting an entire 7-episode "what if" arc out of this. Well hmmmmm.

Eh. This season has actually been really good so far, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and see what they do with it.

Also, that was kind of a really violent episode. (Poor LMD Leopold Fitz.)

But things were even worse for Daisy and Jemma. That was a rough day for both of them.

Also, I'm not sure what to make of Jemma's tombstone in the Framework. That was a pretty scene for me.
