In any case most creators don't make the jump from web comics to big two without a lower profile transition.

Well, even North didn't come straight from Dinosaur Comics.

In early X-Men comics, a big component of every fight is that Angel will punch a guy, because it's not like has has anything else to do. This is kind of funny, because his power is just that he has wings. If anyone's going to just punch a guy, it should probably be Beast, the one person on the team with super strength.

My favorite instance of Angel Punches a Guy was when Juggernaut showed up and Angel thought, "Well, he survived all the explosives we set up as a trap, and Cyclops blasting him has no effect. But maybe his secret weakness is just a regular punch from a regular guy with maybe slightly above average punching ability?!"

I also like this one, where he is way, way too overconfident in his ability to punch Quicksilver and gets frustrated when someone with a useful superpower for fighting helps out.

It also has the nice kicker where Iceman has already encased Quicksilver in ice, and then Beast generously offers to immobilize a person who is already frozen.

How do you feel about Iceman's boots?

When did Angel start lugging around that bazooka? He's got it on the cover of X-Men #1, but he doesn't use it inside the issue.

I read somewhere that Marvel got lots of angry letters when Iceman lost the boots—that he just looks ridiculous if he's not wearing nothing but a pair of little black booties.

Well yeah. He's constantly producing ice and stepping on it --without the boots, he risks a serious injury from slipping!

boots provide traction his ice feet do not, they're integral to his character

Come to think of it, does that style of boot have a name? I've only seen X-Men and Captain America in it --maybe pirates, but those usually part at the front (with optional buckles and high heels) while these ones go all the way around.

Yup, they're called Pirate Boots. And they do seem to be ubiquitous in Silver Age superhero comics. Sometimes they have that part in the front, but mostly they're solid all around. They make for a useful design element to break up the monotony of the human silhouette.

He never gets that bazooka. I don't think that idea made it past the cover. It's too bad, really. Teenager with angel wings lugging around a huge bazooka is pretty classic goofy 60s comics imagery.

They did eventually solve his lack of offensive power in the most 90s way, though

Uh. Is there a reason there's a fuckton of Nextwave cameos in the CW2 stuff? Bloodstone in A-Force and the Captain in Nova, at a minimum.

Which is a significant fraction of the non-Monica, non-shit cast.

Ellie Bloodstone they were maybe prepping for her big role in Monsters Unleashed. The Captain, I dunno. Maybe just because he's super great.

Ahead of their time, even, since Archangel debuted in 1988.

That was about the same time they capped Doug Ramsey. Louise Simonson was ahead of the grimdark curve.

Gotta make room on the team for Cable, right?

Nah, they still had to go through X-tinction Agenda and some truly repulsive art before Cable showed up.

Bloodstone was a main character in one of the Secret Wars 3 books too.

How bad does the art have to be before Liefeld comes as a sharp relief?

There's a big gap between the Ramsay stuff and Cable even then.

And, yeah, early Liefeld was probably a step up, as weird as that seems.

I really don't think it was. At the very, very best you could call it a sideways step, but even that is pushing it.

Of course, I do stand firmly opposed to this recent Liefeld reappraisal that posits that actually he was very good. He was not.

A brief timeline, as a refresher: Doug died in the New Mutants #60 in February '88 as part of the Fall of the Mutants crossover, and Cable debuted on the last page of the New Mutants #86 in February '90, Liefeld's first issue as regular artist. The bulk of Simonson's run falls inbetween that, with the Gosamyr arc, Inferno and the very long Asgard arc as the most notable larger narratives in it. X-tinction Agenda was late '90, by which time Cable had firmly entrenched himself into the title.

Also, Bret Blevins was the regular artist on the New Mutants for most of the thirty issues before Liefeld arrived, and while he had a certain predilection for vaguely unsettling anatomy and questionable facial expressions on his characters, he only improved as he went on and by Inferno was putting in really stellar work in capturing warped demonic landscapes and manic slapstick sequences.

I think Blevins probably left at the right time. I don't know where Louise Simonson would've taken the book if he'd still been the artist, but the Liefeld stuff was really suited to his "strengths" at the time.

(Checking up on it, I'd apparently forgotten that Nicieza doesn't get a creator credit on Cable.)

Yeah, she was writing the book through the middle #90s or so, and I think his early stuff was still working off her plots. He does get credit for Deadpool, though.

He wasn't very good... but when he had calm, capable inkers back in the early days, the worst excesses of his art tended to be wallpapered over.

Yeah, it's more Bloodstone and the Captain, both speaking in the trademark Nextwave "****" cursing, that really got my eyebrows up.

Yeah, there's a world of difference between Rob all by himself and Rob plus Bullpen veterans like Thibert/Wiacek/Rubenstein.

Youngblood also allowed Rob to become his own editor, which certainly didn't help matters.
