Analysis isn't the barrier for entry, it's the icing.

The picture is cool and pretty and then, OH HEY!

Otherwise it's MERELY cool and pretty. tbh just making fanstuff is pretty awesome and should be sufficient for entry into the Hallowed Halls provided Content is not Horrordome-appropriate.

This makes him a good fit for Overwatch, where apparently half the cast just aggressively roleplays characters out of various genres of fantasy/spec-fi, because when you're a superhero/villain who's going to tell you what to do?

Not ANA, that's for sure. If you didn't want me wearing a Samus suit, you shouldn't have faked your own death for my adulthood, MOM.
Yeah, I assume that officially Torb's a "fantasy media dwarf" in the same sense that McCree's a "cowboy" - it's just that his perma-cosplay is of a nominally non-human species.

Taking another look, maybe I should count Mercy as an angel, and Widowmaker as a Grimace?

And heck now that I think of it she's almost a masked serial killer...

That IS darn weird. The artist actually made a point of throwing robo-hands on McCree (who I wasn't aware even had one) and Torbjorn (which... OK we're assuming that's detachable right? Because sleeves? You'd think if so he'd have a different one for social occasions) when it's easy enough to hide such things if you're wearing fancy limb covering suits, but... Symmetra's got that big obvious prosthetic entire-arm even in her cosplay goddess skins and such.

And then I guess there's also Genji but I don't actually know if his deal is supposed to be that he's a full conversion cyborg or just a Metal Gear Solid cosplayer.

Worth noting that out of those "masked men" only Roadhog and Genji are ALWAYS masked.

Because there's still a lot of resistance to the idea in mainstream media design. Oh, there's been progress for sure. But most female characters still fall into a certain range of age and body type that is appealing to the cis-hetero male demographic.

Zodar talked some about this a while back: Character design, especially in the AAA realm, is a massive echo chamber where tastes move glacially. Z's example was the middle 2000s, where every NPC in every tentpole shooter was the same vaguely reptilian bruiser from the depths of conceptart.org.

Blizzard doesn't take massive design risks - what they do is polish the most successful ideas from the most recent mature paradigm and create a genre-killing apex predator. That philosophy informs their art, too. Which is great, because they were able to re-energize a cartoon aesthetic that's been digested, re-digested, re-re-digested, then shit into a shiny box and called Battleborn. And they seem very open to exploring different character aesthetics, but again this is a thing that moves slowly.

In the context of the fanart, one could draw an analogy re: Genji, I guess - he's wearing a New Rental Prom Tux that he's not really comfortable in, it's not his yet, he's got things that are emblematic of him (green cravat) without knowing how they fit or how to wear them yet.

It isn't the worst analogy there is for having to grow accustomed to a whole new chassis. Especially since for a lot of young dudes the Rental Tux is something brand new, uncomfortable, perhaps empowering, and a sign of change and growth. He'll grow into it. Zenyatta, opposite, is also wearing a tux - but in proper black tie, not in Prom Boutonniere, and that pretty much reflects their relationship.

It's not a complete analogy but it's a start.

I will say that I can't really parse the dress designs in the Ladies pic - though the acres of flesh on display and total misread on what a woman Ana's age would find flattering and daring suggests it was painted by someone at least partially blinded by horny.

It is kinda funny to me that the artist's Junkrat and Roadhog communicate more of a child/parent vibe than their Pharrah and Ana (Ana's facial expression and boob window mostly communicate "I am going to fuck you, my grown daughter, like I just got out of prison," and I feel kinda embarrassed even mentioning them.)

I haven't even looked back at the Ladypic, I'll take a swing by it again once off-duty, but mostly because at first glance I thought the outfit/hair design was disconcertingly out of place.

The roadhog/junkrat relationship in-game (such as it can be expressed in game) is basically protector/protected with a dash of enabler and I think that's pulled off pretty well!

I'm not aware that Ana and Pharah actually have any operable relationship in the context of gameplay beyond the fact that (GET IN THERE plus JUSTICE RAINS FROM ABOVE) is the equivalent of pushing a baby bird out of the nest because of Pharah's fragility, either pharah will fly and ruin everything for the bad guys forever, i'm so proud of you honey, or she will perform the FPS equivalent of being given a new box of crayons and returning a drawing her mom would be ashamed to put up on the fridge, oh my god nobody can ever know.

I'm not letting teg's selection pass without mentioning that I love Nanu being both a crazy cat lady and a renegade cop.

Also what the fuck D.Va's sleeves are Hakurei sleeves and this upsets me.

I think Widowmaker, Mercy, and Mei's dresses look good and suit their personalities, but Ana's boob window and Symmetra's asymmetrical trophy wife fuck-me dress... don't.

I do appreciate that the artist didn't just throw up their hands and go "FUCK IT ZARYA'S GOING TO WEAR A SUIT TOO," even if I have conflicting feelings about Who Wore It Best.

it occurs to me that we got swept up into the niceties of formal wear so quickly that I don't think anybody remarked on how the ladies are drinking cosmos out of a hot dog's butt.

so that base is covered now.

Zaryas idea of fancy dress is a three-piece track suit, and probably carrying around an entire ham, eating it like an apple. Or at least a can of Vienna sausages.

I appreciate that her dress is built around showing off her guns, however.

Wrong thunderdome.

re: Zarya

Like, they grew out Zarya's hair and gave her a dress. I love High Femme beyond words but OW has opportunities for that and imposing femme sensibilities upon Zarya is just a really puzzling choice. Like, why?

Even if it is Tracer's haircut, it's still two orders of magnitude Less Butch. She'd rock a suit. Even without a suit, those heels wouldn't be an awesome choice for her for structural reasons alone - they're going to snap. A double slit gown with stockings makes it look like she stole something out of Symmetra's closet and had it tailored. It kind of reads like she's Renouncing The Stone (butch) and that is a little sad cause she's got a great design that should be embraced. The costume sabotages it.

Evening wear that wouldn't sabotage the design (as it is): suit. Tux might be a little much. No tie. Jacket off, over shoulder. Cuffs open and folded back. Suspenders or embroidered vest to add color besides pink. Let her butch out, show the guns off. VERY slight, chunked boot heel. I'm not blizzard but if I were designing Zarya's costumes I'd never put her in anything that she'd have to change out of in an emergency situation. Even pushing femme, I'd assume shoulderless, no cleavage, mid-thigh, no-slit, tight at the waist - i can't get reference material atm, but very mid-century. Conservative & functional.

(Note: none of this is fashion advice, wear stilettos all damn day long, rock the hell out of them no matter who you are, because fashion is a bullshit concept anyway. These are thoughts on costume design, not on fashion, and the point of costume design is to subliminally emphasize aspects of a character rather than to Look The Way You Feel Best)

I dunno enough about hanboks to talk D.Va. I guess the artist picked "Tinkerbell" over "Tracksuit" for Tracer. Mercy needs to take her damn wings off but she's maybe a nod to Winged Victory of Samothrace so points for that I guess.

Widowmaker is super fucking on point for her design, just right there, not that it's a super hard jump to where she is - the boots are basically in-game costume and the fascinator's a bit on the nose - but still, like, costume-wise that's basically everything you need to know about her, dramatic, french, obsessed with death, maybe kisses girls once in a while, goes to operas to be seen and leaves 30 minutes in.

Mei is hard to Play, that's for sure. If you're me and have exactly jack and shit idea what your team is doing at any given time. pfff strategy w/e

I'm an ideal zarya/mercy/hanzo because then I either get to dictate my team's actions, follow them happily and hope they save me, or ignore them completely and get play of the game when my cat jumps on the keyboard to beg for food (i never play hanzo).

I have no idea how to read her costume except it gives me (a person who understands in only the most general sense what a cheongsam is) an understanding of which portion of the world someone in her family comes from. Beyond that, it seems way colder than how she normally dresses. And way less modest. Is she comfy in that?

Because when I look at her I'm not seeing "bae." I'm seeing "D.Va saw a teen movie once and decided to give her a makeover and it's super cute but her dress is a size too small for her and she can't actually move at the knees and to add insult to injury Hana took her glasses off, cause that's the finishing touch that makes sweet goofy nerds into Pretty Girls, right? Except now Mei's legally blind and carrying a tray of booze and glass around a bunch of high-strung killers and things are about to get tragic."

None of this should obscure the fact that the artist is awesome and talented as fuck and the fanart isn't wrong or bad because there's no such thing as that. I'm a theatrical costume design junkie in repression and I have a really specific interest in what people try to say with clothing and hairstyles when they put them together in fictional creations. In this case, some of it's "this looks cool and is culturally authentic" and that's pretty amazing tbh.

Her hair's badass tho that musta taken some time.

That was awesome.

Including the sleep pictures make it look like the Charmander went from hatching to adult in 4 days. How time flies, my child!
