Default Well, At Least 2016 Gave Us Some Good Music

I had to make my year-end Album of the Year list, so I guess that means it's time for me to make the thread wherein we reminisce about how gosh-dang great the music of this year was.

Nothing hit the highs of last year's one-two punch of Carrie & Lowell and To Pimp a Butterfly, but I still had a hard time getting my list down to 20 albums. Feel free to add your own lists, if that's a thing you do, or just talk about stuff you liked this year! I always get a lot of great recommendations from these threads.

My List:

20. Charisma.com - unPOP
19. The Avalanches - Wildflower
18. Charli XCX - Vroom Vroom
17. Kanye West - The Life of Pablo
16. case/lang/veirs - case/lang/veirs
15. David Bowie - Lazarus
14. Young Thug - Jeffery
13. Miranda Lambert - The Weight of These Wings
12. White Lung - Paradise
11. Rihanna - Anti

10. Nicolas Jaar - Sirens
9. Blood Orange - Freetown Sound
8. PUP - The Dream Is Over
7. Bon Iver - 22, A Million
6. Beyoncé - Lemonade
5. Jeff Rosenstock - Worry.
4. ANOHNI - HOPELESSNESS
3. Solange - A Seat at the Table
2. Mitski - Puberty 2
1. Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition

What site do you write for, Sampson?

This was a weird year for me. On one hand, a lot of artists I listen to released new music; on the other, they were generally comedowns from their last release. Not bad albums by any stretch, but certainly lesser entries in their discography. Of course, some were still great, and I did find plenty of new music to satisfy me, but I think I would say 2016 is still mildly disappointing, because... damn, what could have been.

Anyway:

Honourable mention #1: Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!"
Honourable mention #2: Tófa - TEETH RICHARDS

10. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
9. Swans - The Glowing Man
8. Mélanie De Biasio - Blackened Cities
7. Tim Hecker - Love Streams
6. Helms Alee - Stillicide
5. PJ Harvey - The Hope Six Demolition Project
4. Scott Walker - The Childhood of a Leader
3. Kjartan Sveinsson - Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen
2. David Bowie - Blackstar
1. Deakin - Sleep Cycle

Avalanches is definitely on top for me. I'm shocked at how well they stuck the landing with that one, after sixteen goddamn years.

Damn, yeah this kind of sums my year as well.

Bon Iver and Solange's latest were let downs for me.

Dug the new A Tribe Called Quest album though

The only albums I listened to more than once this year are

Gorguts - Pleiades Dust (legendary death metal)
Protomartyr - The Agent Intellect (punk in the vein of The Fall, Wire, etc.)
Vektor - Outer Isolation (prog thrash, grows on you)

Okkervil River released another uneven album with at least one classic:

Wolf Parade returned with an EP. It, too, is uneven but they're among my favourite bands ever. I saw their first show together in years. It was a secret show in Nanaimo, BC, and I nearly cried.

Echoing Demo above, Moonface's new album is also great, and more delicious Spencer Krug angularity:

My brother is producing some great music. This is one of his projects - total shoegaze that rocks out hard.

This is his dance music group. They put out kind of an astoundingly good album this year.

I have no shame in saying this, but I actually like some of Justin Biebers recent songs.

I'm "beta testing" so time to flub up a songs list. I don't know if this is top songs, but it's a list of songs, and I'll number it, but I'm just letting it out there that I reserve the right to disavow this list

Honorable mention because it's barely came out but deserves a mention because it's christmas:
Big Freedia - Rudy, The Big Booty Reindeer (Go find it on spotify cuz its not on youtube)
bounce owns. big freedia owns. christmas needs twerk santa.

20. Puce Mary - Night is a Trap II
noise/industrial and again with the nsfw album cover in video.
19. Cellular Chaos - Burn Option
noise rock
18. Sutcliffe Jugend - Masks (i'm aware i linked to a different song. I'm tired of youtube not having my tracks)
sutcliffe's (and power electronics in general) edge nonsense sucks but his high pitched squeal is too good :s
17. The KVB - White Walls
synth pop/darkwave
16. Petty Tyrants Meatball -
Jungle/Footwork
15. Young Thug - Kanye West
14. Shugo Tokumaru - Vektor
complex folky pop
13. The Gerogerigegege - The Gerogerigegege
It's lame picking the most accessible shoegazy track of a band most known for wild performance art and songs that are spastic noise flurries under 30 seconds but this is relaly good and heartbreaking anyway.
12. Mykki Blanco - For The C---- (I'll let mykki say that word instead of i)
Weird hip hop
11. Solange Knowles - Cranes in the Sky
10. Miserable - Stay Cold
very dense shoegaze (and hey, christmas themed!(?))
9. Floorplan - Good Thang
Detroit Techno
8. Mendrugo - La Breva
adorable folky pop
7. Blood Orange - Better Than Me
dev and carly rocking the most 80s-transplant synth on the album (probably)
6. Beyonce - Formation (w/ Big Freedia and Messy Mya)
There's something about an economical sound, and making most of the backing of this song a single looping sample that sounds more like something I'd expect C Spencer Yeh is basically perfect for a song that became the major track of '16. And with Messy Mya's opener and Big Freedia's "I came to slay, bitch", I think Beyonce may be the weakest part of this song and I'd have to search to find flaws with her here (and in general).
5. Quick sidetrack to choose two songs that don't actually count but I'm adding them anyway:
Meishi Smile - Belong (on an album last year, given a video this year) ~there's an epilepsy warning on the vid btw~
Heavy, dense, dark jungle music closer to black vomit than meishi smile's general j-pop influenced dance music and iirc he headlined a hatsune miku fest so i hope he played this with vocaloid lol
David Bowie - 'Tis a Pity She's a Whore (released as a single years ago and although album version is a separate version it may not have made it on the list anyway but I'll throw it here)
buck the system. This is better than blackstar and lazarus though it's not by enough to actually care. You know bowie I don't need to say anymore.
4. Frank Ocean - Solo
I mentally include Be Yourself in this as well. I think organ is a cheap shortcut but whatever this is too pretty to care. What really sells this is the post-hook vocal calisthenics, and maybe it's showing off but Mariah Carey hasn't been doing much recently so someone's got to.
3. Anna Meredith - Nautilus
Eat your heart out hunter hunt-hendrix
2. Tim Hecker - Black Phase
I went to moogfest this year, and Hecker's set was easily the highlight of probably the entire year. This, while pink and blue fog is pumped so heavily that you have trouble seeing the seat in front of you, was a religious experience.
1. Jan St Werner - The Somewhere That Is Moving
Despite it being number 1 I don't have much to say... it's ambient/modern classical (i mean, as the large branch but not really) and it's great.

Love all the Mitski love in this thread. I think she's going to be one of the true greats.

This was like the first year in forever that I actually listened to new music. Didn't listen to enough albums to make a list but here are some unmentioned songs that gripped me:

SLOTHRUST - "Like A Child Hiding Behind Your Tombstone"
The Casket Girls - "Sixteen Forever"
Death Grips - "Spikes"
Japanese Breakfast - "Rugged Country"
LVL UP - "The Closing Door"
Clipping - "Shooter"

Other than Blackstar by David Bowie and Gore by The Deftones, I pretty much avoided new music this year. Not surprising, really. I never listen to the radio and I don't really watch television. I don't have much exposure to new music and usually spend my listening time neck deep in old shit.

To that end, the best new-old music I discovered in 2016:

Albums:
The Pixies - Bossanova
Guns n' Roses - Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 (no, I'm not being ironic)
Thomas Happ - Axiom Verge OST

Songs:
MGMT - Indie Rokkers
3TEETH - Pearls 2 Swine
Primus - Too Many Puppies
Sia - Breathe Me
The Pixies - Alec Eiffel
Cheap Trick - Dream Police (I had heard this before but never realized how damn good it was)
Destroyer - Kaputt
Cloudberry Jam - Another Moment Follows
Soen - Savia
