This has the potential for some kickass sports titles - I fully expect Mario Golf and Tennis back after the recent unfortunate hiatus.

I love - love - that this is the kind of reaction this news brings. Love it. You guys will never let me down.

My guess is that the switches are faulty, or something about the Lite's design makes them go bad.
So it's a defect in the wiring, then? Yeah, definitely getting a DSi of some kind next DS. Even though by some miracle, my DS Lite's working (mostly) properly again, I need to upgrade anyway.

As for that 3DS thing? I'll probably wait to adopt. Being LttP with the DS was for the best, what with it having more games I wanted to play and all.

But I've gone from being disappointed at the reactions from some of the people who are most ardent about the hobby to looking forward to seeing just how badly they try and blow it out of proportion. It's fun! Because like I said in another thread, alexb is still gonna buy one no matter what, and in his blackest heart of hearts he'll be both ecstatic for a new toy and cursing Nintendo for making him buy a new thing he hates.

Sarcastic or not? You decide.

I'm perfectly open to this being done well (probably by Nintendo and few others), but I can't say I'm looking forward to the first year or two where every game has it shoved in whether it fits or not, before companies remember that they can make good games by only using new tech where it fits.

Just wait until the reaction when they announce:
- only supports downloadable games
- games tied to the console rather than the user
- one-time-only downloads
- server-side feeds they can turn off when they want
- all games are episodic
- every item is DLC
- only motion controls
- all non-game/casual stuff

Can we make it even more games-ruining than that?

When I first heard about this, I thought, Isn't it a bit early for April Foolery?

Well, I guess I can probably skip the DSi XL now, which I was considering getting for some no doubt bad reason.

I really liked the Virtual Boy back in the day. Wario Land on it was amazing and I enjoyed all the 3D parts of it. I felt that they were more than just a gimmick. If this new DS can do something similar and has Nintendo's level of polish on the games then I am excited.

So, I'm reading the article about Sharp's new screens, and it sounds like basically they're LCDs that have pixels going towards the sides in addition to the front, to make a hologram effect with the screen.

That sounds really cool.

Parish posted something about 3D not working for him, but doesn't this kind of 3D trick the brain in a way that doesn't require stereoscopic vision (which I assume is the issue)?

Does it bother anyone else that the DS2 could have a 3 in its name?

I just hope moving up to Gamecube power with or without 3D doesn't mean fewer people making good 2D portable games.

If they wanted to be accurate, they'd call it the DS5.

This poster is as ignorant as he admits.

Now that I've thought about it, this concept makes perfect sense. Nintendo realizes the DS must join the high res 3D games market eventually, simply because it is a market (and an inescapable market). With this accelerometer-coupled 3D technique, they meet this requirement simultaneously with conquering the greatest difficulty of 3D games -- controlling the camera.

At first I thought this was simply a cosmetic thing, just another display technology. Something Sony would do. It's not. It's another control technology. Very Nintendo and very clever.

tl;dr version. Accelerometer-coupled 3D = the final word on 3D camera control

Edit: Actually, I'm not sure if the control will be solely accelerometer-based. The DSi demo is camera-based. I suppose for higher accuracy, they could combine the cameras and accelerometer.

The only thing that bothers me about the announcement is that what the hell am I supposed to do with my DS Phat and my DS Lite? I still have my old Game Boy tucked away in a drawer, and I also have a PSP that sees regular use. I don't need a new device so quickly

But, uh, otherwise, cheers! And I'm excited at the potential.

That's my thought too, and I'm excited. I'm a little worried about headaches, but hopefully the new technology won't work my eyes as hard as other 3D does (also yay no glasses, because I hate those glasses so much). I'm also wondering if the display will look weird to people without two working eyes, but I'm sure Nintendo has thought of that variable. The accelerometer will make some games impossible for kids to play on road trips (hey, Kirby Tilt n' Tumble!), but that's hardly a deal-breaker.

Yeah, it sucks that there's the Mexican law that says you have to get it as soon as it comes out.

KIDDING but really why would that bother you

If I seem contentious in this thread it's because I don't get the immediate hate. When the DSi came out most everyone had the same knee-jerk reaction people are having to the 3DS, and then recently more and more people here started talking about getting one. And this new device isn't even an incremental upgrade but an entirely new thing. I know, if I can't stand the cynicism I should stay off the internet. But then, if everyone loves to complain about something, I love to complain about complaining.

And now, in a shocking act of inconsistency, I will respond to snarky comments as if they were entirely serious!

Presumably the case, but keep in mind everything outside of that initial PDF is just rumoring and educated guesses.

But...it's Nintendo.

Even their casual stuff, in most cases, is gamer friendly. Excluding Wii Music and Fit, anyway.
