Research suggests that spiders collectively eat as much animal mass as humans collectively eat. In other words spiders keep all the other nasty insects in check so that we might go about the world without as much insect-inflected misery as we would if spiders were not around.

That still doesn't excuse the fact that spiders are absolutely pants shittingly horrifying.

Whenever I find a spider in my house, I will name it - usually something from Norse mythology - and then catch it and release it into in the verdant wilds of my backyard.

"There ya go, Freyja. Be free. Eat all the bugs."

Unless it's a black widow because fuck those guys.

Releasing spiders you found inside to the outside may not end well for the spider if they've acclimated to an indoors environment.

Better to relocate them to, say, a dusty basement corner or other remote cranny of the architecture where some insect control is needed.

It's been years since I've relocated a spider. They don't tend to nest in the house, and the dog and the cat keep the indoors clean. But whenever I find one in the backyard or in the corner of the boiler or whatever I just let her be. They are good bugs.

I took these pictures myself and thought I would share them. These aren't going to make the cover of National Geographic, but it's still neat that I was able to get this close and take shots this clear.

Okay, so in the southwest we have a variety of strange animals. Perhaps the strangest is this one, a lesser known arachnid called the vinegaroon. This distant relative of the scorpion is called this because it secretes a solution of acetic acid (vinegar) and flings it at prey and threats with its whip-like tail. So basically, it's a scorpion that douches its enemies to death.

The vinegaroon was sleeping in the first picture. It's wide awake here, with its claws unfurled and legs spread outward. Its scientific name is mastigoproctus giganteus, and at three inches long (with the legs adding an extra few inches) that title is hardly an exaggeration. I wish I would have added something to the image for the sake of scale, but you'll just have to take my word that this thing was big.

I approached this vinegaroon from the side, and didn't get spritzed. Still, between this and the skunks, I think I take too many risks when taking pictures of wildlife.
