Congrats!

Don't get millipede burn!

I don't think you'll actually be at risk of getting millipede burn, but I just recently found out that millipede burn is an actual term for an actual thing and it's a fun phrase to use so I'm using it!

Millipede burn.

Have you settled on a name for your li'l fella yet?

Is Mr. Burns in the running?

Or Legstravaganza?

I think the most this species can do is turn your skin temporarily orange, but all due caution will be exercised!

And I am definitely open to name suggestions.

I was going to go with a nerdy joke here but "Ed Logg" is a terrible name for a pet.

SHE'S LIKE TWICE AS BIG AS I EXPECTED HOLY COW

pictures to come, snapped some while we were releasing it into the tank. it seemed panicked at being taken out of the box and promptly dug itself a burrow in the dirt and curled up in it so i can only see its butt now.

big big bug.

mom jokes:

"yeah, that's okay, she's settling in...she had a stressful day"

"a really crappy flight"

"at least it wasn't united"

"they would've made her pay for extra leg room"

All kinds of stuff, but mostly dead wood an composted leaves, which makes up most of the substrate in her tank. Every now and then I'll be tossing in bits of fruit/veg and cat kibble for whatever assorted nutrient needs that doesn't cover.

We have that species or one very similar living at a park nearby. I've been tempted to catch some and keep them...how difficult is the upkeep on these?

Earlier I saw her clutching a piece of leaf in her first five pairs of legs while nibbling it and kind of gyrating the way cats do when they have a toy?

I have no idea what that means though.

Re: upkeep - probably less than I'm putting into it. I was told going into this that the main things are substrate and humidity; the dirt you keep them on will make up most of their diet, so it should be good dirt, composted wood and leaves, and they need their space humid but not wet/muddy.

I'm also finding that you need to provide decent cover or they'll just burrow down and then there's nothing to look at. Fortunately, cover can just be a nice layer of dried and crushed old oak leaves; it's cheap, they'll crawl around under it but on top of the dirt (which makes finding the 'pede into kind of a game), and if you want to take them out you just brush the leaves aside.

Leaf litter also seems to help with the humidity situation. You're trying to emulate the conditions under logs and old leaves and stuff; humid, but not waterlogged. I think moistening the substrate and then putting down the leaves traps a bit of that humidity and creates a comfort zone.
