Star Fox is supposed to lag just so in order for the music to sync up and a few of the trick shots to be humanly possible. Not even Higan (the most advanced SNES emulator in the world) can get it close without the power of a full gaming rig at its disposal; either you try to run the Super FX chip as close as you can by pushing your PC to the edge (and often the game will run too slow compared to a real cartridge due to the strain), or you take shortcuts and it winds up running too fast. On top of this, we don't even know what kind of lag Star Fox 2 had, how bad it was, or where, because it never had a real release.

Nintendo choosing to get both Star Fox games running on low-spec hardware is either suicide or they know something about the Super FX chip that has eluded the most dedicated reverse-engineering of the past 20 years.

I haven't read this thread, and I won't buy one of these things, but that is a fuck of a lineup!

According to the Kotaku post, you have to beat the first level of Star Fox to unlock Star Fox 2

Yeah. Completely awesome.

Also I guess this means Nintendo got their Super FX troubles sorted out?

I mean, if we can ger Starfox 2 we should just ask for FFV.

Will they even sell extra conteollers? I'd love to get a few...

Since Nintendo is known for putting polish into little OS details, I'm imagining what kind of cute animation they could have when you unlock it.

*radio crackle* "Fox, a new unreleased game approaches!" (a few measures of star fox music plays...)

I already want one so bad.
The front controller ports are just for decoration, like the flap on the NES Classic. They probably have the normal Wii ports on the back. I'm sure they're using the same controllers they released for the Japan Club Nintendo, and will be backwards compatible with the NES Classic.

There's a quote from Nintendo about their production plans that gives me a tiny sliver of hope (if not very much):

Quote:
We aren't providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition.
So, like, two dozen of them.

Also, they specifically state that production will run until the end of the year, so expect them to discontinue these things at the height of their popularity again.

If that's true, then the 8bitdo Bluetooth receiver should work on these things and that would be GREAT.

Or they still have the source code for the games and can rewrite the SuperFX bits.

This article is making the rounds again! Which is news to me, because I didn't know Star Fox 2 was fully completed and tested despite its cancellation. I thought the final beta rom was all there is.
It also claims that the roms we have right now are actually missing some more advanced features; I find that hard to believe since the game is beatable even in its non-romhacked state. I'm hoping there's a way to hack these things just so it can be set loose, because I'm not looking forward to paying a scalper just to get my hands on one of these things...

It's not impossible, but a lot of the source code from games of that vintage has been lost. Companies were really, really bad at preserving their own stuff in the 90s.

It is up on Amazon UK. It SAYS it won't ship to US but doesn't prevent the ordering. A couple of outlets have said that it will still ship to the US. So now I have the European one preordered, though will keep an eye out for the real deal US one. I fully expect my order to be cancelled.

Jason Schreier is reporting on twitter that the controller cables are 5 feet long (apparently the NES Classic's were three feet). No word on power cable length yet...

Final Fantasy III
Kirby's Dream Course
Contra III
Secret of Mana

SMART!!!
F-Zero ain't no two player game!

Anyway, I own most of these on cart, but I'll be watching with interest to see how Nintendo handles another potential disaster.

EBGames isn't taking pre-orders yet, but I'll be jumping on one as soon as they do. I was never able to get a NES classic, but like hell I'm missing this one.

If they can't meet demand on this, they damn well better make Star Fox 2 and Yoshi's Island available on whatever virtual console-like service we get on Switch.

Welp, there's no way I'm missing out on this!

hahaha just kidding I'm sure they will be sold out no matter how much they make

But if I do get one, hot damn, that is a lot of amazing games, only some of which I own for the Virtual Console.

So I finally break down and order the parts to make a retropie console so I can play my favorite SNES games on TV again and this announcement comes out the next day? That's nice.

Yeah, I wonder if they're reprogramming the FX games to run natively on the new hardware and they'll just cap the frame rates of Starfox 1 and 2 to 15 or so to keep them looking and feeling like they did/would on original hardware.

Back around 2007 I was in touch with Dylan Cuthbert and he said that the Starfox 2 ROM(s?) floating around the internet back then only had one of the 80 or so scenarios that the game picks at random, so while you could get to the ending the vast majority of the gameplay was missing.

Wow. Man, I bet the chances of me getting one is pretty low, but $80 is a steal.

You probably still spent less than the retail price of this thing, and it'll be a rewarding experience to set that thing up. The only thing you'll lack is Nintendo's branding and cool UI.

And Star Fox 2, I guess.
