Now it's dogfighting, but in between the dogs pull your sled and herd your sheep. Also, dog breeding and fashion shows and ohgodpokemonreallyarejustdogs. But, more seriously, for a long time I've thought they should just give you a storyline Pokemon that can't fight and doesn't use a party slot, and just learns all the HM moves for you. Make it the mascot of that gen. Keeps functionality without making you learn moves you don't want. Does ANYBODY actually enjoy teaching HM moves to their Pokemon?

EDIT: Actually, Lilfut's suggestion is better.

why not just take the lock off of HM moves that prevents them from being forgotten

it hasn't been needed since they stopped letting you put HMs in the PC in like... Gen II?

We've had this discussion just recently in the Gen VI topic, the fix I like best Pokemon an auxiliary moveslot: a fifth move that couldn't be used in battle but could still be used on the field, making it an ideal dumping ground for weaker HMs (or other moves that are nice in the field, like Teleport or Sweet Scent). Ideally I'd expand it to a full four moves (to allow for quick changing of a moveset, to make experimenting easier), but even just the one would be a huge help.

It would also just be nice if, like, the HMs themselves weren't so bad in battle. Surf and Waterfall are good, but it ends there...

And, when the game does gate you by plot, it's through Team Rocket rather than the gym leaders. Johto is similar.

I agree with you that it's a much nicer way to approach the region. It feels like much more of an adventure, even if it isn't really that open.

I thought the "can't forget HMs" lock was already removed. Either in Gen 6 or back in 5?

Gen 5 did remove the "need badges to use HMs in the field" rule, which was fun for the early game if you traded in somebody that knew Surf and decided to throw yourself against a brick wall by heading west onto Route 18.

Of course, Gen 6 reinstated it, which put a damper on my fun.

I'd still like a late/postgame tutor that let's you upgrade the junk HMs.

Or maybe winning a badge could give a number of TM moves the same in-field effect that an HM would have. For instance, one badge could give stuff like Scratch, Shadow Claw, Leaf Blade, Night Slash, etc. the same effects as using Cut. That way, you're still having to progress the intended way to unlock more ways to interact, but you're not stuck with a garbage move to do it. That might be hard as hell to actually hash out, but I'd love to see it happen.

Wait no fuck the forgetting moves thing

well whatever, I'm not deleting it

The more recent games have played down the use of HMs so that you don't have to carry around an HM slave everywhere you go, but the downside of this strategy is that if they don't want you to go somewhere yet, their only tool is a guy standing in the middle of the road saying you can't go this way; go follow the plot instead. You can sometimes finagle things if you only have HMs to worry about, but there aren't a lot of ways to get around Guy Blocking The Road.

I'd much prefer a return to the old design philosophy, and if that means I have to carry around an HM and not every Gym Leader can get involved in the plot, so be it.

This is the best and coolest way to do it.

Surf/Fly should just be a "DO YOU HAVE A SWIMMING/FLYING POKEMON BIG ENOUGH ok go" thing but giving more moves non-unique field applications would make HMs less annoying while preserving the charm of having moves do things. It also lets your field moves keep pace with your progression in the game, because there'd be low-power moves and high-power moves that do the same thing and instead of having to awkwardly lug Cut around you could graduate to a better version.

That's a translation error. Heatran isn't in Juane plaza, there's a girl in Juane Plaza who does pokemon calls. She's supposed to do a Heatran call, and the other girl is supposed to compliment her on how good the call is, but someone decided to instead translate it as literally hearing a Heatran and thinking the pokemon was nearby.

Hey, at least they confirmed that Magearna is Fairy/Steel.

Because, you know, that wasn't obvious at all.

Also, look at this adorable-ass JP commercial for the game. Pokemon keeps putting out trailers about people playing the games instead of the games themselves and it makes me cry every time what the fuck

I've got six months to mull over it, but I think I'm going to go with Popplio. Better to have a Bizarro Spheal than no Spheal.

Rowlet is the best of the three for sure, but I never choose the grass-type starter. If Turtwig couldn't win me over, nothing will.

Welp, we're going to Hawaii. And I'm actually going to pick a grass starter for once.

I'm getting that damn owl and that bat legendary and nothing can stop me.

Can't believe we're getting a third Water seal line, but I guess they're running out of amphibious animals. One day I'll get my marine iguana starter, but it is not this day.

To be fair, the others become a dugong and a walrus. Maybe this one will actually stay a seal?

Exactly, and there are far too many clown varmints as is.

It's a dreadful abundance, it is.
