Hey, just read that issue in my trawl through old X-Men comics. Also making my way through Alpha Flight volume two and I have to say: Mesmero (who shows up early in Claremont's run to turn the X-Men into carnies) is my fav goofy-ass Silver Age villain. He's purple and green and his lifelong vocation is villainy and artists do cool stuff with his eyes.

Anyway, in 90s Alpha Flight he kidnaps Teen Alpha Flight (always loved them based solely on their appearance in an old X-Men encyclopedia) to explain his recent past with random teams that don't matter, like the Dark Riders and Alpha Flight, Volume One. Wonderful!

Apparently, he lost his powers after M-Day, but showed up recently in X-Men Gold with his abilities restored and no explanation. Good. Ignore M-Day.

Another thing I like about Alpha Flight V2 is that it's heavy on narrative, second-person text-boxes, judging the reader and characters.

Huh, so they really are trying to sell The New Mutants as a horror movie.

Really unfortunate that such a relatively small cast has two unambiguously black in the comics characters... less so on screen.

Does Cecilia seem villainous? Thatís even weirder than Psylocke tbh; isnít she kind of a cape-skeptical normie in the comics?

Regardless, this is one of my favorite groups with several of my favorite characters and Iíve come to believe every in the franchise is at least ďfineĒ so Iím sure Iíll enjoy this, too.

Yeah, that's a very different Reyes than the comics, but then again it may just be a psyche out where you think she's the villain but really it's a giant spectral bear. But then maybe she is the giant spectral bear in disguise.

Also a radical departure is that the movie actress is noticeably not black.

Yeah, this is a weird adaptation choice all around for that character.

Sunspot and Cecilia are both black and latino/latina (Brazilian and Puerto Rican, respectively) in the comics, and in both cases they seem to have left out the "black" part. Although even the comics seem to forget the black part about Sunspot . . .

I can see focusing on the Brazillian part when casting Sunspot, but Cecilia's character really should be a no-nonsense black woman from the Bronx...

So this has nothing to do with the continuity of the X-Men films then?

Why wouldnít it? Those have pretty loose continuity to each other, but it still exists. Thisíll be more like Deadpool than Apocalypse.

I think the only two X-Men movies in continuity with each other without requiring dozens of No Prize style explanations are X-Men and X-2.

And really, isn't that the most X-Men thing of all?

I'd argue Days of Future Past and X3 together too because of that ending, but I get what you mean.

The only canon X-Men movie is Deadpool.

every movie released before days of the future past has been retconned out of existence, except for maybe first class.

and for what it's worth in New Mutants, there was some storyboarding stuff floating around a while back that suggested it is an actual super hero movie and not just generic horror

Look I'm just saying that Logan pretty firmly says that the only mutants left alive now are those kids they experimented on and escaped to Canada. I obviously concede it's very easy for the writers go "except for this one hospital full of teenagers" or just say that it takes place before Apocalypse or whatever the hell.

i think i read it takes place in the 1980s, so if i had to guess, it takes place between age of apocalypse and dark phoenix 1

I think you'll be pretty safe in just letting go of the assumption that future X-Men movies will take place after Logan (unless they are explicitly positioned as a sequel to Logan, which will hopefully never happen).

I always sort of read Logan as a What if? comic adaptation.

Iím intrigued. There are definitely horror elements in New Mutants, but I donít think this trailer seems to evoke them. It looks like the trailer for the American remake of Pulse. As with all trailers, I find it thrilling and canít wait to see the motion picture.

Like, I donít think any of the teens are going to die, but maybe this really is just a slasher flick and a bunch will? (probably not, though!)

Maybe if this is about some manner of demon bear itíll end with Bobby and Cecilia experiencing race transformation. Bold.

The New Mutants (the original run) is one of my favorite comics and I think the trailer looks kinda awesome. The X-Men movies (outside of Logan) are such a mess that I'm glad they're doing something other than generic superhero stuff. I have no clue who Cecilia is but I'm curious why Karma isn't in there if they're doing all the other originals.

Only so much you can include in one movie. Karma was written out for awhile quickly in the original run, too. Also, MagooMagik (phone!!) wasnít an original. (she joined after Karma fake-died)

Hmm. Agree.

Magik also joined after Magma, but Magma's primary appeal is that she looks cool in the comics and I'm not sure that would translate to film. Same with Warlock, who joined shortly after.

Cecilia is a late 90s X-Person not particularly associated with the New Mutants, as far as I know. The character on screen seems to bear little resemblance to the Cecilia in comics. Alice Braga looks like a potential Selene, actually, though that character is still pretty different from Evil (?) Teacher Doctor we see in the trailer. I mean, Selene is described as Inca in the text, (once?) but she doesn't look like other indigenous characters in that arc (...or Amara in redface) and that's not her backstory as far as I know.

Is Selene an ancient horror of color? Hard 2 say.

I get the sense that the writers asked, "Are there any mutants who are medical doctors?" and found Cecila Reyes.

Ann Nocenti, actually. Perhaps she's responding to Claremont's oeuvre~

I've found a surer 1-panel tell for Chris Claremont: Kitty Pryde uses the n-word to win an argument with a black person. (she is successful because Chris Claremont is white)

So the stupidest part of this Mojo storyline in the main X-books? Every character in-universe knows the dumb event names (X-tinction Agenda, Mutant Genesis, etc).
