The generic gyro is a favorite sandwich of mine, but a local food truck offers an improvement on the formula: the lettuce or other greens are replaced by heavily seasoned crispy shoestring potatoes. Still has the tomato and red onion for flavor and texture, though.

ice cream sandwiches are deffo sandwiches.

the fancy deli/bakery downtown here makes cool layered ice cream sandwiches with a mix of different ice cream and sorbet flavors and stuff. the best lately has been a sch'mores ice cream sandwich.

We have a gyros place by the office that sticks fries in there, but they're a health-conscious fusion joint that uses braised meat and sweet potato oven fries. Waves of compromise emanate from it like cartoon stench.

I love gyros but have only had sub-optimal ones since moving to Ann Arbor, as is the case with most foods that aren't burgers.

Lots of salads don't have cheese. Asian-style salads don't, vinaigrette doesn't have cheese.

So you don't mean something like an egg salad sandwich? You could try a banh mi. Not sure if the tofu in that counts as a meat "substitute" since it's not really standing in for meat...

I finally tried a burger with a fried egg on it yesterday and it was quite good. I normally don't care for my eggs over-easy, but on a burger the runny yolk works for me.

Check Moroccan food for vegan salads that kick ass. IIRC they have a salad made entirely of pickled and roasted veg that'll bring you back from the dead.

Good stuff. Levantine cuisine has some great ones too, like fattoush and tabbouleh. And also this, though usually I chop it in larger pieces, and use salt and olive oil in addition (verjuice is also very good). Also great if you add lettuce.

Unless mayo doesn't count, in which case, whatever you use instead of mayo, I guess.

For salad, there's Caesar -- leave off the bacon, I guess. Or use fakon.

I love carrot salad, and I don't think I've ever seen it served with cheese or meat. Not sure it really counts, though.

A buddy of mine recently revealed that he loves to fill pita pockets with whatever stir fries he manages to assemble out of his fridge. I would've given him shit for it, but it's a fucking brilliant idea.

Yes! The secret ingredient to such a thing is avocado or hummus.

An awesome no-meat vegetarian (vegan!) sandwich could be avocado or hummus (dare I suggest both?!?!), bell peppers of your choice, red onion, tomato, lettuce, olives. EV olive oil, salt, pepper, some balsamic or red wine vinegar or mustard if you like.

In personal news regarding sandwich-type foods, the other day I had a cheeseburger with a fried egg (and bacon) on it. I didn't hate it, but I didn't really love it either. I didn't regret* ordering it but I don't know if I would order something like that again.

*My stomach has been kinda iffy not matter what I've been eating the last few days.

I've been doing the old "make an omelette with toast, then put it between the toast as a sandwich" breakfast a lot recently. Not really healthy most of the time, yet also not too unhealthy. One omelette makes two sandwiches, and it's incredibly filling. I'm even spicing it up with some salsa (expensive here, but worth it this time) to help mix in some more flavor. The best part is you don't even have to leave it for breakfast.

So once upon a time, there was this place I used to eat. You might have heard of it, it's called "Chick-fil-A."

Pretty good stuff, in my opinion. Nothing too fancy; their basic Chick-fil-A sandwich is just a chicken sandwich with nothing but a pickle on it (and maybe a little butter on the bun?), but I always added mayonnaise.

To me, that was always a Chick-fil-A thing: Chicken sandwich with mayo and pickles. Never thought to try it anywhere else. Usually lettuce and mayo, maybe tomato.

Then I had a Chicken Burger Buddy at A&W, which comes with -- you guessed it -- just mayo and pickles.

Since then, that's how I've been getting my chicken sandwiches from just about anywhere. McDonald's Junior Chicken? Hold the lettuce, add pickle. Subway crispy chicken? Just mayo and pickles, please.

I'm surprised how well that combination works outside of Chick-fil-A. It's been like a revelation of sorts. Might do some of my own at home as well, provided I can find a good pickle I like at the store.

You can make your own chick-fil-a fried chicken, I think the only major thing is that they brine their chicken in pickle juice before breading and frying.

They pressure fry as well, which requires specialized hardware 99% of kitchens don't have. You can get pretty danged close to a CFA sandwich, but it will usually be drier.
