So we're hosting a round of a book club I belong to and I'd like advice on what to cook next time. Usually about 10 people show up, a few are vegetarian, two can't eat soy and another two don't eat gluten.

This week we opted for Japanese curry and optional tonkatsu, but then realized the curry has soy in it and apologized to those two. I might try to grill some pork for the gluten-free people too but it's expected to be in the 50s and rainy so grilling won't be the most fun.

Any ideas on things we can do? I'm really flustered. This is a weeknight meeting so unless there's a slow cooker thing we don't have a lot of time to make anything, especially at such a large scale.

This is like some kind of logic puzzle. But I have a suggestion -- this chicken gyro recipe (the recipes for the fries and tzatziki are on the same channel):



It's soy-free.
Vegetarians can eat the pitas, fries, tzatziki sauce and vegetables.
The gluten-averse should be able to eat the fries, veggies and chicken.

Whipped cream. It generally only goes on top of blended iced coffee drinks like Starbucks Frappuccinos, and other caffeinated beverages that resemble milkshakes.

I've read recently of people recanting their Starbucks orders with things like "low fat latte no whip", and I did wonder if they meant cream, but then thought "but why the fuck would you put whipped cream on a latte?".

Americans will put whipped cream on just about anything (including each other). And they'll put bacon in just about anything (including each other).

"No whip" and "extra whip" are very specific to Starbucks, though that still means the terms are present in most of American coffee culture.

I was in Starbucks on a date with an Italian guy once and he had to ask me what a "venti" was. Starbucks' stuff is obtuse on a whole new level, to the point where an Italian has to ask what his own word means in conjunction with coffee.

We tend to do the stereotypical whole long list of ingredients and requirements type orders here in the UK much less. It's a lot more "skimmed milk latte", "black Americano", "caramel frappe with no cream" sort of thing.

It (kind of) makes sense when you factor in that there's a non-menu smaller size called "short," making it a gradient of short, tall, and grande, with "venti" referring to the fact that it's 20 oz. It's still ridiculous and obtuse, but you can discern the underlying logic.

I can't discern the logic of their naming system though. Like, make it all Italian, all American, or just consistent in some sort of way, dagnabit!

Made the barbeque chicken and "German Potatoes" from What Did You Eat Yesterday? My home fries game is weak, but the potatoes still came out pretty good. I'd probably pass on the bacon and leek in the future and just use onion. The tip about boiling the potatoes first was a revelation, tho. the bbq chix was great, natch, bc how can you mess that up
