Yeah, not a real fan of thorns.

Something I am a fan of though is dice with funny numbers of sides and brain-hurting shapes! In particular, these:

The noble d7 hits that very nice sweet spot where it looks pretty clearly die-like, it's exceptionally easy to read, and unlike a d3 or a d5, there isn't any other die you have laying around where you can just roll it, divide by 2, and round up.

Probably.

I mean, there ARE technically d14s, which, much like grody ol' d10s are shaped like a top. You can pretty well get any even number of sides doing this-

And apparently, there's some more ambitious attempts there too-

... but I don't know if those are statistically accurate. First time I'm seeing them.

Meanwhile, while again, it's easy enough to just roll a d10 and divide by 2, it IS pretty rad that statistically accurate d5s exist and look so damn weird:

I've never seen anyone encounter one of these in the wild and not immediately start to freak out about devilry and witchcraft and shouting that there is no way in hell it actually has an equal chance of landing on any given side, but they work, and they look kinda neat, and I wouldn't mind having a few lying around.

Meanwhile, the standard design for a d4 really sucks. They're sharp and pointy and hard to read if you've never seen one (especially the oldschool number-at-the-base sort, so as much as I'm put off by the whole "crystal dice"/"barrel dice" angle, these are pretty neat:

This works too, especially if you're one of those purists going "but that doesn't really have 4 sides! Technically that's 12!"

The first 3 are all 3d-printed, on shapeways. Here are the thorn ones.

Those dice are almost $100 dollars.

Why are those dice almost $100 dollars? Were they made by actual dwarves?

3d-printing metal + finishing hasn't quite hit mass-market tech levels, I guess :c

GOOD CHRIST, THAT SITE

Buffalo Horn HNNNNNGGGHHH

They also have teflon dice, which roll heavy and don't bounce much, and polyester resin dice which bounce A LOT. Even the category headings (druid's dice for wood, necromancer's for bone, elemental for stone, etc.). Ugh. Argh. Hngh. Yes.

Amethyst?

Opal?

Or a set of ruby dice if you have a $1,000 lying around.

I majored in geology, so gemstone dice is so up my alley it comes out my mouth.

I gotta get me a set of opal dice, right after the mammoth ones, heh. Jade and ruby, too, once I'm filthy rich off of shifter bears. Amethyst would be my second pick, but the lovely and magnificent Droewyn already got me a sweet set of quartz dice for Festivus. I like them so much, I hardly use them, haha. (I thought I'd die when I lost the d8 of the set. Found it later, but they are all stored safely in a drawer now, lest it happen for real.)

Oh, cool. *records on sketchpad that Solitayre is an amateur geologist*

But the joke I was making is that the four gemstones I quoted are Gems (jade isn't in there yet), which is what made me think of it.

I'm not gonna lie, I am actually for real considering buying those jade dice. It probably wouldn't be the dumbest thing I've ever bought.

yea those look kinda shitty. I would hope if I were buying expensive dice crafted from fancy gemstones, they would be a little more pristine.

Haha wow that has a lot of customization options. They are literally handcrafting treasure chests for nerds to keep their dice in.
