My first attempt at making one of these:

I tried for the 'flat iron' technique I'd seen described some places where you try to entirely fuse the beads on one side. It worked, but I think I was a little over zealous with the pressure or the heat.

I've done a few heat transfer type projects in the past, and one thing that seems universal is that pressure isn't ideal (with a few exceptions, like certain substrates of t-shirt transfer material). If you are pushing down on the iron I suspect you're doing it wrong. Same applies for a lot of tools, actually, like chainsaws. Let the tool do the work for you with a chainsaw, otherwise you are merely forcing the chain to rub against the bar unnecessarily. The chewing action comes from the movement of the chain against the wood, not the pressure applied. I suspect the same is true of irons. What are you accomplishing by pushing down? All it means is that if the plastic is molten enough to be affected by pressure you're creating pancakes rather than sealing the plastic together.

That said, I hate seeing the little holes in the beads. As an art critic I always prefer no holes AND no 'cloud lump' edges. I guess I'm likely just impossible to please in regards to these beads, hence why I don't plan to ever use them for anything.

All that said, I'm an idiot who yaks about shit he knows nothing about, so maybe someone will come along to correct me or something.

Frankly had your megaman had a square border his pixels would all be nice and square, and I like that. Afterwards you could maybe sand off the 'cloud lumps' from the outside edge, maybe, or somehow fit square metal objects around the outside that you remove after ironing.

Well I'm just thinking out loud anyway.

Hmm, your issue with "cloud lumps" makes me wonder if you could take a black-outlined sprite like Megaman there are surround it with a second outline in clear beads. Then the clouds would at least be translucent, and you'd have a nice crisp square black edge inside. Might work? I dunno, I've only ever done a little Perler work and don't have beads at the moment to test the theory.

maybe find some way to stick wax paper between the clear and black, so you can chisel off the clear ones afterwards?

if that works, you could even use shitty beads you would never use that just pile up in your storage bins

I like moderate bead holes, myself. It gives the illusion (for me at least) of looking at these things on a CRT as God intended. I iron both sides for structural integrity.

I also don't mind slight pillowing around the sides. It's a limitation of the medium and I find it weirdly charming. If it bothers you I'm sure you could cut it off with a razor.

So I made one, and completely forgot about kirin's suggetion and totally had trouble getting the blacks on the outside to fuse properly, but it still came out pretty well!

Very cool. I have a few to put on when I can get around to using a camera (my mobile phone camera having apparently developed a cataract).

I'm starting an interesting project now. It will either be cool or very terrible, but I will post my results for the amusement of all either way.

I made these to be donation prizes during Spineshark's El Viento run at Summer Games Done Quick 2014. Unfortunately, I didn't have nearly enough beads to build the squid at 8x resolution as it appears in-game.

I was wondering how some of that even held together until I saw the clear beads you used it a few strategic locations, though it still looks awfully touchy.

The tentacles actually hold together pretty well. Annette's scarf might move a little if you push it, but it's not going anywhere.

My first stab at a perler project that isn't a 1:1 pixel re-creation:

I got bored of Robot Masters so I chased the dream instead. This is hanging in my home office and uses 29,435 beads, and took me five months on and off. I had to separate it into discrete 29x29 tiles to avoid warping during the ironing process (which I learned the hard way partway through my first attempt).

Now to make the same design, only overlaid with the map! Just kidding, there's not enough blue in the world.

There are six dark gray beads that aren't really visible in the photo, but yeah, it's funny how much of that pipe is defined by negative space.

I love that you have a whole panel that is nothing but black beads.

So what did you use to attach each panel together, anyway? Are they glued at the seams, or connected to the frame on the back?
