Default 『Project OCTOPATH TRAVELER』

An RPG for the Nintendo Switch from Silicon Studio (Bravely Default) employing some 16-bit styles. Release date unknown, but the trailer being in English makes an American and possibly even a European release probable.

The title sounds like a reference to the Buddhist idea of the noble eight-fold path to nirvana.

Doesn't look like it, but the models look like they're textured with pixelated graphics that match the resolution of the 2D elements.

Too early to tell, but it looks like the Bravely devs might actually know what towns are this time.

Anyway, I hope we'll hear more about this game soon.

I'm totally into it's weird "Vagrant Story janky polygon environment" and "FFVI sprites but animated" look.

I noticed there were eight characters in that promo art, so I'm definitely betting on a Saga-esque eight separate stories converging together type deal.

This looks very Matsuno. Finally, Nintendo gave me a reason to justify my actions when i buy a Switch.

Octodad Trebuchet looks very "3D Dot Game Heroes but good," which sounds like my jam.

The One True Octopath involves dogs and does not involve research.

Did we see any movement besides left-to-right sidescrolling in that video? It kind of looked like it would be sidescrolling only. Which strikes me as... odd.

It looks gorgeous though, and I Am Interest.

So do you have to play it eight times to see the true ending? Because I am probably willing to do that.

You have to play it 16 times. The first 8 play throughs will unlock new game +. The next 8 play throughs on new game + will reveal the true ending.

This is a good catch. My expectations were at "FF6 level" from the nice looking monster sprite, but I think this is going to be a different kind of game entirely.

Couple thoughts:

1) When I try to imagine how exploration would work if it is truly sidescrolling, I think this is could be something like Riviera: The Promised Land which didn't even have d-pad movement, but still managed exploration by simply giving you fixed intersections at every screen. Maybe in Octopath you'd move left/right freely on each screen, but there are places where you can branch in 3 directions instead of just going to the next room over. It would make perfect sense with that 3d town they showed.

2) If you listen to the narration, it sounds like it is trying to evoke a boardgame/pen and paper game. So it might be a very untraditional, Crimson Shroud-y kind of game. There's a veritable boom right now of indie games on Steam that create full fantasy RPGs out of psuedo-boardgame or psuedo-cardgame style presentations, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

That looks a lot better in a proper video than it did in my low res stream.

So far I am way into that visual style. I love it.

I hope the game itself is fun!

My interest is piqued.

Do we know who's doing the art? It looks Yoshida-esque but I can't determine if it's him or someone with a similar style, like Hideo Minaba.

Looks pretty dang cool, yeah. I'd have liked action combat, but turn-based can be compelling, too. Wonder what the "hook" is.

the look is great but i'm not confident in the bravely default team's abilities to be quite honest. which is weird, because i'm pretty sure i enjoyed bravely default a lot when i played it but the thought of playing it again or bravely second kind of makes me feel nauseated?

Not sure whether to be excited or cynical about this, but since it's Squeenix, I'll go with cynical for the time being.

Probably the only new game revealed over the past few days that made me sit up and say "Ooooh, I need to know more about that one" -- the visuals are amazing and the Bravely games are the only modern traditional JRPGs I've gotten much into in years.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's their Not-Romancing SaGa game instead of their Not-Final Fantasy V game. (The trailer sounds like Not-SaGa instead of Not-FF, but it's probably just misleading...)

Unlikely. Silicon Studio has shown a willingness to incorporate user feedback, which is why there was 98% less creepin' in Bravely Second than in Bravely Default.

I agree with you and others that this is probably what to expect. But the question still remains whether the team can handle making a Not-Romancing SaGa without making me disappointed.
