Oh hey, Trent Troop designed that.

He's done a lot of really cool Shapeways stuff mostly related to Transformers.

So, remember in Horror Club when we see a younger Lars hiding in a secret club, fearing being seen "that way" (not obvious what exactly that means), "feeling hurt and trapped for so long", carving his name into the wall? And in The New Lars, when we learn that's a chosen name, and his mom's horrified when she realizes she accidentally called him by his given name? And when he meets the Off Colors, and meaningfully says "so you've been hiding your whole lives" when he "gets" them?

So we're supposed to read Lars as trans, right?

This...seems pretty solid to me.

I've seen it proposed, but all of that is circumstantial, and I don't think that the way they've handled him is the way they would want to handle the only trans character. It's applicable, sure.

I agree it'd be a little weird and uncomfortable for the only specifically (non magical) trans character to 1) be such a huge jerk, 2) have such a preoccupation with performative masculinity, and 3) be magically and non-consensually turned pink.

(Specifically magically-trans characters, or "trans-applicable" characters, include, primarily, Stevonnie, but also the gems as a species.)

But when I think about a writer saying "this character hates his given name and strongly identifies with his chosen name, and has spent his life feeling trapped and hidden", without any clear external pressure that he's reacting to, I just feel like they're trying to tell me something.

Well, it was true of The Matrix I guess?

It might read better as some other part of the queer spectrum? But also part of Lars's job is to be unpleasant, but still worth caring about.

Maybe when we see more of Lars in the upcoming seasons it will change our understanding of his previous arc and behavior.

I doubt he's intended as trans, but if that's how you want to read it, I also doubt the show would go out of its way to establish him as cis.

The struggle for authenticity is a key theme of SU, and they seem to be more about Tolkienish "applicability" than they are about straight up didacticism.

It's not out of the question for Lars' story to be meant to touch anyone who has changed their names to be who they really are, whether it's a Chelsea Manning or an el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz.

Just, ah, just missing Steven...

On a related note, I'm sure it's a fine show, but I get unreasonably angry whenever I come across Rick & Morty merch with such a dearth of ANYTHING SU. Where are the dolls, figures, and foam weapons to spoil my daughter with?

Yeah, when I buy SU stuff it's almost entirely to encourage them to release more.

Unrelatedly, I rewatched "Open Book." What a weirdly lopsided episode that doesn't seem to quite know what it wants to say... It has metareferences on par with Sadie and Lars's sinking ship but then it concludes rather weakly, with Steven apparently wanting a more serious relationship than Connie, which doesn't seem consistent with other episodes? Not sure what to make of that one.

Speaking as someone who loves SU, "weirdly lopsided and doesn't quite know what it wants to say" is probably an accurate descriptor for the whole show.

It took me a while to realize that Crying Breakfast Friends is SU self-parody.

Dammit people, I saw that this thread got bumped and let myself get excited, but there's no news of new episodes here at all!

I'm 4 seasons in, been using this as a kind of positive force in dealing with my divorce junk. It's really good!

...it's just kind of a shame that its another one of those kind of weird overall fanbases that pushed me away from it for this long.

Seriously. How hard would it be to repurpose those Hulk/Thing hand molds into Garnet's gauntlets?
