You could debate whether anything he says is a lie.

The upcoming passage (Genesis 3:1-7) has some of the best writing in the whole Hebrew Bible. I could spend weeks just exploring the rhetorical traps. I won't, but I could.

hopefully Numbers will be all just one long, easily glossed over panel.

I imagine I'll gloss over the census, but Numbers has some great stories in it. I can't wait to do Balaam.

Are the Hebrew characters lining the various panels the literal Bible verses? I think it's a cool conceit.

Yeah, when Hebrew shows up I'm quoting the Biblical text, usually in the dialogue. Some of my translations are looser than others. I really like how the conceit acts as makeshift citation, as the more Hebrew you see in the margins, the closer I'm hewing to the text.

If you want to see someone knock the idea out of the park, check out JT Waldman's Esther. That graphic novel manages to cram the entire text of Esther into the panels without ever looking cluttered.

Does the Bible specifically say how long did Adam and Eve lived in Paradise before they screwed up? Because I really like today's "two hour" punchline - we humans are a race that can't stay out of trouble, even if we have been magically engineered and conditioned to obey an omnipotent voice in the sky!

We make bad pets, that's what I'm saying.

I like your "it wasn't very long" theory. I giggled.

For future reference, we don't need to use, like, spoiler tags to talk about what happens in the Bible, right? Maybe we should, for people who aren't familiar with the stories? Its your thread, Sprite, I'd defer to how you want to approach it.

Well of course the last thing I want people to do is talk about the Bible or read the Bible. They might spoil my comic!

Thanks for asking, but no, you don't need to spoiler-tag anything. I think the statute of limitations is up for stories which are so old that we don't actually know how old they are.

Still enjoying this, Sprite! Today, following reading your comic I thought there was more reference to the time Adam and Eve spent in the Garden, so I looked it up! I was specifically thinking about the phrase about God walking "in the cool of the evening" and thought that was something specified that he did regularly.

But, nope! It's only mentioned when he's roaming around, looking for Adam and Even while they're hiding after the whole fruit thing. That got me poking around even more and refreshing myself on things like the theories about the compilation of the Pentateuch, like the four sources documentary idea.

I guess we're starting with the Jahwist creation story then? Are you going to be following J for a while, or will we be weaving in and out of the different sources? I could see using J primarily since it gives God a bit more personality and he might be a more interesting character to write.

We actually started with the P creation story, though I cheated and morphed it into J.

I'll be treating the Torah as a finished work, rather than try and separate out the strands (i.e., a canonical reading). The Bible's much funnier if you view it as a whole, even if it's not. And I'm skeptical of our ability to discern what source is what, anyway.

If you're interested in the Documentary Hypothesis (it's not a theory), I recommend checking out Joel Baden's stuff. He was one of my Hebrew Bible professors in grad school and is one of the hypothesis's best defenders.

I choose to interpret the request as a desire to see the story continued.

Answering the important questions.

I'm sorry. I'm afraid this strip contains no nipples either. I'm so, so sorry.

Sprite, I'll be extremely pleased if your comic ends up grappling with theodicy or the changing nature of God in the Scriptures.

B-but where else am I supposed to find pictures of breasts on the Internet? I want my money back.

Prediction: Fae is going to get broken at some point. I don't know what's going to make it happen, but she is clearly a child of the New Testament, and living through the Old Testament is going to end up putting a real strain on her concept of God. Basie, on the other hand, is emerging as a skeptic -- I wonder if this is going to strengthen her faith somehow.
