I avoided it for much of my life (I have a distinct memory of having mild chicken wings by mistake once as a teenager and feeling as if my mouth was on fire for days), but I began a concerted effort in my mid-20s to broaden my palate and it's been paying the most delicious dividends ever since, including a very high spice tolerance now.

Still, you can take the boy away from the ketchup, but you can't take the ketchup away from the boy.

How has no one mentioned corned beef or pastrami yet? They're classics for a reason, people!

I was of the understanding the policy was entirely motivated by wanting to make sure a somewhat struggling fishing industry didn't collapse

I had to do a Google.

Quote:
Since Jesus sacrificed his flesh for us on Good Friday, we refrain from eating flesh meat in his honor on Fridays. Flesh meat includes the meat of mammals and poultry, and the main foods that come under this heading are beef and pork, chicken and turkey. While flesh is prohibited, the non-flesh products of these animals are not, things like milk, cheese, butter, and eggs.

Fish do not belong to the flesh meat category. The Latin word for meat, caro, from which we get English words like carnivore and carnivorous, applies strictly to flesh meat and has never been understood to include fish. Furthermore, in former times flesh meat was more expensive, eaten only occasionally, and associated with feasting and rejoicing; whereas fish was cheap, eaten more often, and not associated with celebrations.

There was a now sadly defunct pizza place near us that used to do sliced andouille sausage as a topping, and man that was good.
