Default Maurice Sendak R.I.P

Complications from a stroke

Two(Jan Berenstain) of my favorite storytellers to fall asleep to as a kid are gone this year now.

Now to rewatch his hilarious appearance on the colbert report again.

In Mr. Sendak's honor, I watched Pierre, the cartoon based on one of his books. It's about a boy whose total indifference nearly spells his doom. I'll admit, I cried a little while I was watching it. (Only a little, though.)

The New York Times wrote a terrific obituary for the man, filled with insight and facts you may have missed while Maurice was still alive. It's definitely worth reading.

I also appreciate that there was an element of grim reality and the macabre in his work. I doubt we'll be seeing much of that in children's literature now that he's gone.

The New Yorker unlocked this Art Spiegelman strip about Sendak today, in his honor.
