1. Good leg animation.
2. That's not where mouths go.
3. And that's just not how eye sockets work at all.
4. How many faces are sharing that head?
5. Lacks the sequel hook from the arcade version.
6. The new final boss comes with a healthy dose of the uncanny.
7. You'll probably settle for the second-best weapon because it's easier to use.
8. Thrilling new gameplay addition: slopes!

In retrospect I don't know how we went this long with those clues without mentioning at least ONE Contra game, jesus

Dracula mentioned Hard Corps, for what it's worth.

1. Good leg animation.

2. That's not where mouths go.

3. And that's just not how eye sockets work at all.

4. How many faces are sharing that head?

5. Lacks the sequel hook from the arcade version.

In arcade Super Contra, Gabba has a fetal alien embedded in its head. After killing Gabba, the baby alien crawls out and flies away. Gabba isn't even the final boss in the console version, and this detail isn't reproduced in any way.

6. The new final boss comes with a healthy dose of the uncanny.

Later appearances by Kimkoh render its lower face something more uniformly grotesque, but the mismatched placid female face seen here is far more bizarre and probably the closest Konami ever came to beating H.R. Giger at his own game.

7. You'll probably settle for the second-best weapon because it's easier to use.

The Fire Gun has a charge shot that does a ton of damage, penetrates enemies, and can even hit things through walls with its splash damage. But in a fast-paced game like this, with threats pouring in from all sides of the screen, managing a charge shot requires a lot more brain power than just mashing the fire button—so the good ol' Spread Gun will do the trick for most folks.

8. Thrilling new gameplay addition: slopes!

It's true: This game introduces diagonal terrain that actually lends a nice bit of variety to the level design. That said, it's amusing to think there was a time when a concept as quaint as "go up a ramp sometimes" was notable.

Beast Kimkoh was unsettling enough that Teeny Octo always felt reluctant to finish Super C.

Octo-Factoid: Super C is a very hard game and without a Game Genie, Teeny Octo wouldn't have ever seen the helicopter. That does not detract from the anecdote.

Ah man! I shoulda gotten that one. Super C is my jam.

Kimkoh is such a crazy and cool design for a boss, but I wish it wasn't entirely gray in the NES version.

I do love the name, from at least the US manual, for that spider robot with the handsome legs. "Babalu Destructoid Mechanism."

Should have guess at it from the first clue, I remember seeing that in one of madhair's videos.

1. Is fairly straightforward. You and an AI friend are tied together by a sparkly rubber band. You can do fun things with the physics using it sometimes, because it doesn't really behave logically. While you can in theory play it with two players, it's not recommended because the controls are really not built around it at all.

2. In the Japanese manual, the game is set on an island pulled out of the sea from the power of the glowing master emerald at the end of Sonic 3(+K). In the US, it's set on the newly-opened "Carnival Island", which is guarded by Knuckles. In the Archie comics (not familiar with the Fleetway adaptation if there is one), it's on Sonic 3's floating island.

Other clues I was considering:

The tech demo minigame is probably the best part of this one -- referring to the actually pretty nice special stages, which I think are fun to play and have pretty elaborate level design, and are basically a game design stew of the 4 previous games' special stage ideas.

The last time I saw you, you were trapped on an island then too! -- Mighty the Armadillo, the Sonic clone, originally showed up on the isometric arcade game SegaSonic. In that game, Sonic, Mighty, and Ray the Squirrel must escape from Dr. Robotnik's prison island.

One of the few exclusives on the system it was released for -- since there aren't too many other 32X-exclusive games. Fun fact: this is the only Sonic-series game to have come out on exactly one platform / never been ported. Even the 8-bit games have shown up in GameCube era rereleases. (You in the back talking about the arcade games that required specific hardware cabinets like the sonic police car game? Hush.)

The prerelease title for this game sounds like something you'd have with hedgehog chowder -- multiple development builds of the game refer to it as "Sonic Crackers"
