Default Alzabo Soup - a podcast about blooks

Hey gang, me and my stupid friend have been working for months making a podcast about genre fiction. It's a real deep dive into good books, Bonfiresidechat style. We're starting off with The Sorcerer's House by Gene Wolfe. It's a smart cool book with lots to get into and think we're doing a pretty okay job.

https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/podc...150623452?mt=2

Check it out or let a friend who might be interested know or the very least signal boost, it would mean a ton. Thank you.

I'll check it out, if only because I know how friggin' hard it is to promote a podcast.

Question: do you recommend having read a book before listening to the specific episode? Is this very spoiler-driven discussion?

Extremely spoiler free.

At least at first. We obviously cover what's in each chapter, so it's more like a read-along book club?

When will you cover Ready Player One by Ernest Cline?

Hey, I'm all caught up on this. It's good! You guys have a camaraderie and an easy going style that's fun to listen to. That might sound like light praise, but I've heard so many podcasts that are missing that, and it makes a huge difference. You sometimes make little mistakes or get off track, but you're aware of it and joke around about it, and that's the kind of thing that will improve with experience.

The discussion itself is interesting, and I agree that The Sorcerer's House was a good book to start with. I read through it pretty quickly, so I was probably a few chapters ahead for any given episode. You didn't spoil much, but I definitely ended up paying a lot more attention to little hints scattered around the book than I would have otherwise. Plus, I glossed over a lot of the unusual word choices and references, so I like hearing your take on them. I'm looking forward to what you have to say about the end of the book. I wasn't too shocked by the big twists, but there were a few details that made me go back and re-read earlier parts.

I have one complaint: you brought up a famous book about twins but couldn't remember the name, and then didn't come back to it in a later episode. I kept thinking it was going to come up again at some point, but it never did. it seemed like it might be important, so it stuck in the back of my mind.

Anyway, I'm subscribed and I want to hear more. Good job!

All I remember is that you mentioned a famous book involving twins, but I don't remember anything else you said about it, so I'm just going to assume you were referring to Twelfth Night. Or The Man in the Iron Mask. There was probably a Stephen King book with an evil twin, too. You've got plenty of options to choose from, in any case.

I've listened to about 2/3 of the episodes you've posted so far, and they've all been pretty rad! I'm hoping to get caught up on the rest soon.

A podcast about blooks?

Sounds like an interesting podcast, I wish I had more time to listen to one.

No, it was something we briefly studied in AP English in High School. An early book on the nature of good/evil as represented by twins. Not Jekyll Hyde. Google's bringing up nothing so maybe I'm just stupid.

In the latest episode that just dropped we talk about Earthbound for a few minutes at the start and it's probably the most eloquent I've ever been.

Yes, I really enjoyed the Earthbound intro. I've only played through it once, but that made me want to pick it up again.

The famous book about Twins that Loki mentioned was the Dragonlance Legends trilogy which tells the story of Caramon and Raistlin Majere.

Man, you didn't even fix my typo. That doesn't help our image at all.

Loki, I haven't yet but I promise I'll actually listen to your podcast this week, I'm sure it is excellent.

Edit: Halfway through ep 1 and liking it quite a bit, you guys have a very good back and forth.

Loved how the first example you named of restaurants that don't have salad bars was Ruby Tuesdays, an establishment that notably still offers a very nice salad bar.

I'm probably reading too much into this, but I have a theory that you have a long con going here.

Thanks for listening, if anyone still is! Phil made me get an account here so I could complain about musicals.

I started in on New Sun, recently. Weird stuff.

Thanks guys, we appreciate your support!

I was going to wait until we were done with Sorcerer's House before updating this thread but since Metz bumped it I might as well lay out what's next.

Sorcerer's House will be wrapping up in the next month, then we do a month of Wolfe short stories: Underhill, The Hero as Werwolf, and Forlesson. The last two can be found in The Best of Gene Wolfe, which is easily available.

We also were invited as guests on British podcast "You Know What I Like" where we talk about Wolfe short story The Toy Theater (also in Best Of). The episode should be up in March I believe.

After that we're stepping away from Wolfe briefly to go through Tom Stoppard's Arcadia. A cool play about math.

Then it's The Fifth Head of Cerberus. We haven't planed past that but we'll probably start the run up to New Sun.
