It's suddenly hitting me that r/incel is kind of a twisted mirror image of Evangelical purity culture. Both define themselves by virginity; both define virginity mostly as a lack of sexual experience. But both also show a worldview that's utterly dominated by sex and pleasure, and results in creepier outlets for their desires. And then there's the attitudes they have about women. Their treatment of both virginity and celibacy would be almost unrecognizable to, say, a fifth-century monk.

I dunno man, I don't think too many fifth century monks would be keen on literally turning women into dogs. And I'm really sure they weren't too keen on necrophilia.

Did I say "almost unrecognizable"?

My mistake. I meant "utterly horrifying."

Misread that, apparently.

Well, my point stands that fifth century monks were probably way more progressively minded.

To an extent. Though if "No necrophilia" is our threshold for "progressive," we may be in trouble.

I've actually been doing a bit of reading and bookmark-gathering lately on chastity, mainly in Eastern Orthodox thought, especially the Greek term, sophrosyne, and its Russian equivalent, tselomudrie. They also have connotations of sobriety, moderation, integrity of mind, and wisdom; in those senses, it's also important in ancient Greek philosophy.

I've added the "anime is a scourge" thread to those bookmarks, but I'm thinking I'd rather keep r/incel at arm's length.

All that said, I'm going to look like an idiot if next week some archeologist uncovers a lost manuscript by Anthony the Great, "On the Calumnies of the Chads."

The "recycling pussies" thing sounds suspiciously like George Carlin's "Save The Pussies" piece.

That "incel" guy either doesn't understand the absurdity or perhaps understands it all too well and just ran with it.

It's not Eastern Orthodox, but you may be interested in this book by one of my old Professors. For some Medieval monks, describing the experience of divinity is almost indistinguishable from porn.

Thanks. It's a bit pricey, but maybe I'll find it in a library. Cistercian Studies does good work. Eros definitely has a place in Eastern writings, too--I've got a copy of St. Symeon the New Theologian's hymns of Divine Eros right next to me, and a tab open about Eros in the Ladder of Divine Ascent (pre-schism, but that book's a pretty big deal in Eastern churches)--so it'd be interesting to compare all that with the Western commentary.

And all this exactly what I've been talking about: the difference between frustration (incel), repression (purity culture), and sublimation (all these monks).

It's an academic book, so a library is its natural habitat. Though academic libraries can also be a bit pricey.

Accessibility? What's that?

Ha! Yeah, there's already a number of other books I keep meaning to go to the library for, anyway.

Come back for our next episode, where we look for a cheap college textbook!

I do think the Puritans are the closest we’ve had to a real word version of fantasy novel cults that openly worship an evil deity that is openly evil and upfront about wanting to tyrannize and enslave all beings

I don't think it's actually possible to kinkshame a puritan.

Or maybe it's extremely easy.

Definitely one of those two.

Absolutely. It's called the missionary position, not the Puritan position.

Last year they played Josh McCown, RG3, Cody Kessler, Terrelle Pryor, and Charlie Whitehurst. The good news is that four of those quarterbacks are gone. The bad news is that one of them was your best wideout.

IIRC, colonial records showed that a lot of first children were born less than 9 months after the parents were wed. The Puritans weren't much for the wedding bed.

the puritans were such a horny bunch, didn't they invent table skirts so dudes wouldn't look at table legs and think "damn, that's hot?"

I think you're thinking of the Victorian era, and that's also a myth. It seems to have been an individual quirk some people had rather than a widespread social trend.

The 'purity' that Puritans were striving for was more from Catholic/Anglican influence than sex.

The Victorians *were* insanely horny and had no idea what to do about it:

I just want to remind everyone that these Victorian party games existed:

But mostly they they tried to work it out in steelworks and collecting subaltern peoples' hands.

I think they take turns until a new game is chosen. These things read like they're designed to fill time.
