From NME's review:

Quote:
Oh, ‘Frankie Sinatra’. Its oompah-calypso lurch and brain-glitch hook are not quite as punchable as ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’
What the fuck?!!! Why would you assign someone who hates "Frontier Psychiatrist" to review their new album?

YouTube had me discover Little People yesterday:

I apparently can't get enough downtempo in my life.

I'm giving Cupid Deluxe a relisten and it had never really sunk in how great this album is. The new one's now on The List.

Google Play is selling thirty Aretha Franklin songs for a dollar. Naturally, I had to get me some of that. I'm a little bewildered by her take on Eleanor Rigby, though. It's... not supposed to be a happy song. I mean, it's not as jarring as Puff Daddy turning Every Step You Take into a love song (???), but strange.

This is a good music. What else can you recommend in a similar vein?

Well here's a sample of what it's in my regular rotation for more downtempo stuff.

Royksopp is more trance-y and dance-y, but this debut album in particular is really mellow compared to their later stuff.

Emancipator and Bonobo are more trip-hop, though the former is more ambient.

Nightmares on Wax is also pretty ambient.

I also recently started listening to Blockhead, who seems to be heavier on the "hop" part of trip-hop and I don't know how well that works for me yet.

Emancipator is super rad shit, but I can't stand Bonobo.

He's not exactly down tempo buuuuut Pretty Lights is kind of the poster child for a style of music very similar, you should check him out.

Awesome, thanks guys!

I'm a big fan of Blockhead, "The Music Scene" is definitely more hoppy that trippy but I'd recommend that album to anyone.

Similarly, I've been listening to The Avalanches new album but I just can't get into it. There are some really cool moments on there and it flows nicely, but... I'm finding it kind of irritating too. Need a few more listens, perhaps.

See, weirdly enough, I'm exactly the opposite. I find Emancipator a little boring and Pretty Lights not really that complicated, but Bonobo pretty complex and divine. To each their own!

(which is to say check out Bonobo anyways because I think they're cool)

I can't believe how well this new Avalanches album stuck the landing. I think I like it at least as much as the first one, maybe even more.

Surprising no one, Metronomy apparently put an album called Summer 08 out in June or July and I like it a lot. I've only skimmed through it and then just started listening in earnest but I like it a lot so far.

Edit: Okay yeah it's really good.

New Frank Ocean album and new Frank Ocean "visual album" are out on Apple Music. I haven't listened to either yet, but they're probably pretty good, right?

Also the new AJJ (fka Andrew Jackson Jihad) album is out and is very good.

I've really been digging Yellow Magic Orchestra lately. It's both great early synthpop and basically the best Sonic music ever.

For extra bonus fun you can check out western remixes/covers of Behind the Mask. I know Eric Clapton did one back in the 80's, and I think there were several others besides that from what I vaguely remember.

This week is giving us:

A new Danny Brown album that is really really good
A new Solange album that I have very high hopes for
A new Nicolas Jaar album that is characteristically kick-ass

This is a good week.

I found this thing on Youtube last night. I don't really know what to call it that's more detailed than "ambiance." It's kind of world music-y too?
