TBF, I think last time was the first time it came in second place. Before then, it hadn't done better than third.

... and now it's in third again at the moment.

This is why I was wondering about the possibility of doing something with the idea in a different format than a formal Top50. Because I know you'd do an excellent job with it, Red, but at this point I'm strongly suspecting that only about a third of the usual participants here feel confident in making a submission for it, and probably that's never going to change by a whole lot.

Crap, now you've suddenly given me inspiration for a new format for presenting a mecha Top 50, in which each higher rank somehow beats the previous one in some ridiculous fanfic battle....

It's gotten to the point where I'm not using all of my votes so that I don't accidentally cause a different entry to win.

Musical Numbers is not something one would have thought would have got much traction and it went off quite well.

I dunno. Looking back maybe I should have retracted my vote for my own list so that they would have tied and both would have gone but hindsight is 20/20 and also Johnny was concerned about vote fuckery because of having to use Strawpoll so I don't know how comfortable he would have been with that.

It does surprise me, though, how many people on a nerd forum have barely watched any Star Trek.

Nothing is stopping you from doing this in the Star Trek thread itself! Probably get a higher rate of participation in there as well.

Or don't? Sure is a lot of sky is falling in here all of a sudden. Star Trek will win eventually.

I really, really want top 50 mecha to win one day. I mean... My list will be 50% mobile suits but what else would your list be?

There's actually a ton of cool choices and fan-fic battles is the best idea I have ever heard.

I love Star Trek but I would be hard pressed to come up with a list of 25 episodes. I think they all sort of run together for me. There's just so much mediocre Trek where there's like a wormhole and a cloud that talks or something. I think it's one of the reasons I gravitate to the films: it's just much easier to get a handle on them.

The fanfic battles thing would be cool! I remember Wizard or InQuest did something similar back in the day and wrote up these neat little descriptions of battles between fantasy heroes they were ranking. I recall being so salty that Elric killed Rand al'Thor*.

That said, if you do the battles it would be neat if it wasn't just always the previously ranked mech loses against the next higher up, but rather each entry faces off against one that got votes but didn't win. Don't reveal the winner until the end of the post and then there would be suspense!

*Because obviously Rand would have just nuked him with the One Power from a distance and never let Elric get in close to attack with his sword. Sheesh!

Yikes, okay, I fear it might kill me, but if mecha wins someday I'll definitely think about how to pull off a fake battles format. ("Fake" in that wins will of course be determined entirely by plot necessity, just like all mecha battles, really.) But I just ran one a couple lists ago so I'm not in any rush.

Seems a bit lop-sided to me. (Also, I'd rather see Norman vs Alfred.)

I'm only not voting for Star Trek because I know I could never make a list for it. I've probably seen 50+ episodes of it, but that's scattered across my whole life. Then again, I have a friend who watched the entirety of Trek over the span of one year. So that would be a pretty good list.

Y'all know you're allowed to submit lists of fewer than 25 entries, right?

I'm just saying in case there's only 10 episodes of Star Trek that really stand out for you or something...

An "always a bridesmaid" tag? Really?

Star Trek could be runner-up for the next half a year and still have fewer 2nd-place finishes than I had.

In any case, I feel like we have this conversation every time, but:
  • There are no minimum qualifications for submitting a list
  • There is no minimum length for a list
IIRC, almost half of the board game lists that I received were < 25 entries. Several were fewer than 10. One was just a single entry!

One more day.

Also, to Bunk Moreland, the limit is 3 votes, not 5. So please tell me which 3 you are voting for or all of your votes will be voided.
