Default Multiverse ain't gonna save itself - Let's play Sentinels

We're gonna play some Sentinels of the Multiverse up in this thread. If you're not familiar with Sentinels:
The short version is that Sentinels is a superhero comic book that turned into a card game. You and your friends will each be a hero, and you get a deck of cards that lets you use your many superpowers. The villain is automated by way of his own deck.

Now, normally, I do these games first-come, first-served. But today! Today, we will do it differently. You will sign up by picking a hero and optionally a villain and an environment. If you are picked as one of our random winners, great! You get to play as that hero. If you are not, your villain and environment votes go into a lottery towards who our players will face and where, so you might as well vote for something terrible so that the lucky jerks who win have an awful time of things. (Naturally, if you aren't interested in playing, you can still vote on a villain and/or environment.)

As usual, feel free to sign up even if you've never played this game before. It's not complicated, and it's cooperative, so everyone else will have your back.

Here's the thing: I'm going to be running the game on the app, so your choices will be restricted to the content I've purchased. Lucky for you, that's a decent amount. You can assume any variants are available. No, I'm not going to list all of them; the wiki's right there.

HEROES
  • Absolute Zero: Cold-themed damage dealer. A bit janky.
  • Bunker: Tanky damage dealer. Needs to spend half the game setting up.
  • Fanatic: Tanky damage dealer with some utility. Easier than Bunker, but doesn't always pop off.
  • Haka: Bruiser with no utility. Compensates by being very good at his job.
  • Legacy: Tanky support. Good damage in theory, but he has better things to do.
  • Ra: Fire-themed damage dealer with some team support.
  • Tachyon: Late-game damage dealer with a little utility.
  • Tempest: Lots of AOE damage, a bit of healing and support.
  • Visionary: Support/control. So many broken combos in the right situations.
  • Wraith: Equipment-heavy damage dealer with a good bit of utility.
  • Unity: Minions galore. A waste of a team slot if she can't keep them alive.
  • Chrono Ranger: All of the damage, a little at a time.
  • Omnitron-X: Support, healing, tanky? Adaptable.
  • Captain Cosmic: All support, all the time.
  • Sky-Scraper: Does lots of things, but is only good at one thing at a time.

If one of those sounds interesting, I recommend checking out the hero's wiki page. You'll want the page handy when we play anyway, since I'm sure not gonna transcribe every card in your deck.

If you wish, you can list an alternate pick in your signup. Since players will be decided randomly, listing an alternate means you'll still get to play as your alternate if someone gets your main before you're picked.

VILLAINS

The number in brackets is the game's listed difficulty, which is not always accurate. If more than one number is listed, the villain has a variant. If a low-difficulty villain is picked, I may go Advanced or Challenge to spice things up.
  • Baron Blade [1, 3]: Babby's first villain.
  • Citizen Dawn [3]: Minions?
  • Grand Warlord Voss [3]: Minions.
  • Omnitron [2, 3]: Gadgets.
  • Ambuscade [1]: It's a trap!
  • La Capitán [3]: Minions and time travel.
  • The Dreamer [3]: A little girl.
  • Iron Legacy [4]: Evil hero.
  • Kismet [2]: Curses!
  • Deadline [2]: Eco-terrorist.
  • Infinitor [3, 3]: Cosmic's evil twin.
  • Kaargra Warfang [3]: That one Star Trek episode where Kirk has to kill Spock.
  • Progeny [4]: T-2000.

ENVIRONMENTS

The locations are varying degrees of the game being a jerk to you (and occasionally the villain, but mostly you).
  • Insula Primalis: Grouchy dinosaurs.
  • Megalopolis: There's a traffic jam, so you can't do anything.
  • Ruins of Atlantis: Hey who left all these double-edged swords lying around.
  • Wagner Mars Base: Self-destruct sequence initiated.
  • Silver Gulch, 1883: Cowboys and outlaws.
  • The Block: Guards and prisoners.
  • Time Cataclysm: The rest of the environments, in a blender.
  • Dok'thorath Capital: Civil war.
  • The Enclave of the Endlings: Petting zoo gone wrong.

WAIT HOW DO I PLAY THIS ANYWAY

The game, in a nutshell:
  • Villain turn: Play the top card of the villain deck. I'm handling this part, so don't worry too much about it.
  • Hero turns: Each player, in turn, will do the following. All of these are technically optional, but generally suggested.
    • Play a card. If the card is a One-Shot, it will resolve immediately. Otherwise, it will stick around to do more things.
    • Use a power. There's a power on every hero, called their "base power." Many of the cards in a hero's deck grant other powers, but you can usually only use one power per turn.
    • Draw a card. If you skipped both of the other steps, you may draw two cards instead.
  • Environment turn: Play the top card of the environment deck. I'm also handling this.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW THOUGH

Nah.

Chrono Ranger. It's high noon somewhere in the multiverse.

EDIT: Mogri would become a very sad person if I were to, say, stick The Ultimate Target on Omnitron and we leave an Interpolation Beam alive for any length of time.

We could still use more players, and if you're not interested in playing, you can always vote on which enemy our players will face.

I'll only play if we don't have enough interested players. At the very least, I'll say to go to Silver Gulch, 1883.

I was gonna go with four players. That would include you, but you didn't specify a hero.

Game setup brought to you by RANDOM.ORG!

Player order
  • Kalir as Sky-Scraper
  • Destil as Absolute Zero
  • periodical as Haka
  • dtsund as Chrono Ranger

Fun Fact: I think Prime Wardens Haka is basically an all-around improvement to regular ol' Haka. I am not very good at Absolute Zero or Sky-Scraper, so maybe I'll learn something here.

Villain selection
Our villain will be selected randomly from this list:
  • The Dreamer (Challenge)
  • La Capitán
  • Infinitor
  • Kismet (Ultimate)
  • Deadline (Challenge)
  • Omnitron (Cosmic-Powered Exterminator)
  • Baron Blade (Mad Bomber - Advanced)

To artificially draw this process out, we'll draw names until we get a villain twice. So here we go!
  • Omnitron
  • Baron Blade
  • The Dreamer
  • Kismet
  • Kismet

Congratulations! Your opponent is Ultimate Kismet. Look forward to taking extra psychic and fire damage.

Environment selection
Our environment will be picked from this list:
  • Silver Gulch, 1883
  • Time Cataclysm
  • Dok'thorath Capital
  • The Block

And RANDOM.ORG says... Dok'thorath Capital! Keep a little environment destruction on hand.

Kismet's Turn

Kismet starts play with the Talisman:

Kismet flips when the Talisman "dies." (Whether you want her to flip is another question.) When that happens, the Talisman will go to the hero with the highest HP, it will be restored to 7 HP, and it will grant that hero "Power: Reveal the top 3 cards of any 1 deck. Put them back on top of that deck in any order." Since we're playing on Ultimate, it will also constantly deal fire damage to the bearer. In her flipped state, Kismet will damage the Talisman each turn, eventually making it return to her. Kismet is arguably more dangerous when flipped, so careful how you handle that.

And since Kismet didn't flip this turn, she's going to deal everyone 1 psychic damage. Peanuts, really.

Kismet then plays Shaky Arm. Who will be the lucky recipient? Decide amongst yourselves. Remember that each hero with a Jinx gets 2 psychic damage at the end of Kismet's turn when Kismet is on this side. (That's a flat 2, not per Jinx.)

Sky-Scraper (32)
In hand:
Colossal Left Hook
Cortex Hyperstimulator
Neutralizing Resonator
Tectonic Chokeslam

Absolute Zero (28)
In hand:
Focused Apertures
Fueled Freeze
Fueled Freeze
Onboard Module Installation

Haka (33)

Elbow Smash
Enduring Intercession
Taiaha

Chrono Ranger (27)

I mean, I like Absolute Zero's mechanics a lot but the thing I like most about him it it's not really your fault when you loose because you couldn't assemble his fragile janky combo.

Haha good god you started with two Fueled Freezes.

I don't expect I'll be dealing much damage to start because I want to get some slightly better cards in my hand first, so I'll take the Shaky Arm.

End of turn: Kismet reveals Karmic Disjunction. It isn't a "Lucky" card, so it goes back in her deck.

Jinx damage is start of villain turn, not end (oops), so you don't take damage at this time.

Kalir go.

Everyone else: If you know what you wanna do, and you don't think it depends on what anyone else does, feel free to declare it in advance.

I believe I'll play a Taiaha and use it to smash kismet for 3. (Probably shouldn't smash the talisman at this point?)

Smashing the Talisman if you have multiple targets to hit isn't a bad idea, really. Yeah, it hits for 4 fire damage, but once AZ gets their fire module out, that'll be a boon rather than a bane. Additionally, we have no deck controller, and Kismet can field some extremely nasty cards if she gets the chance (Lady Luck comes to mind).

Even though Neutralizing Resonator specifies "villain character card," the app shows The Talisman as a valid target. The Talisman doesn't have a deck, though, so let's play it on Kismet. She apparently discards Two Left Feet.

Surveillance: Sky-Scraper draws Compulsion Canister and Catch a Ride.
End of turn: Sky-Scraper draws Aggression Modulator.

Sky-Scraper (32)
In hand:
Colossal Left Hook
Cortex Hyperstimulator
Tectonic Chokeslam
Compulsion Canister
Catch a Ride
Aggression Modulator

In play:
Neutralizing Resonator (attached to Kismet)

Absolute Zero (28)
In hand:

Elbow Smash
Enduring Intercession

Onboard Module Installation -> grab Isothermic Transducer.

"I know this is a bit sudden," Con told him. "But this one is important."

"They're all important," he replied. "But I 'spect you're about to tell me what's so unusual about this partic'lar monster..."

Con wasted no time getting down to business. "Human, not a cryptid. Name: Gabrielle Adhin. Manipulates luck to suit her own ends, typically selfish. Normally our vantage point outside the timeline allows us to identify your next job easily, but around her things get..." Con trailed off, unable to describe exactly how troublesome sorting through a fractal of possibilities was in any human language. "But I have identified a location in space-time where she can be found with 89.3% probability. This may be the best chance we ever get."

"So you want me to take care of this so you can get back to prognosticatin'."

"Precisely so. Do be aware that there are others hunting her down; they may be of use. Exactly how she is apprehended is of little consequence."

Chrono-Ranger sighed. He hated the interesting jobs. "At least tell me we're goin' somewhere sensible..."

I play Sudden Contract to retrieve By Any Means and place it next to Kismet, then damage her. I then use Quick Shot to damage Kismet again.

Chrono Ranger deals a total of 4 damage to Kismet, then he draws Sudden Contract. Next turn will be fun, too!

Environment turn
Dok'thorath Capital plays Gene-Bound Ravagers, which deals 2 melee damage to everything (except Kismet, who takes 3 thanks to By Any Means).

Villain turn
Kismet deals 2 psychic damage to each hero, then Kismet deals 3 psychic damage to the jinxed Sky-Scraper.

Kismet draws Scattered Mind, playing it on Sky-Scraper, who wasn't dealing damage anyway.

I missed the end-of-turn draw, but it wasn't a Lucky card, whatever it was.

Sky-Scraper's turn
Sky-Scraper may destroy an ongoing card at the cost of Neutralizing Resonator.

Sky-Scraper (25)
In hand:
Colossal Left Hook
Cortex Hyperstimulator
Tectonic Chokeslam
Compulsion Canister
Catch a Ride
Aggression Modulator

In play:
Neutralizing Resonator (attached to Kismet)

Absolute Zero (23)
In hand:
Focused Apertures
Focused Apertures
Fueled Freeze
Fueled Freeze
Sub-Zero Atmosphere

In play:
Isothermic Transducer

Haka (29)
In hand:
Elbow Smash
Enduring Intercession
Taiaha
Rampage

In play:
Taiaha

Chrono Ranger (23)
In hand:
Sudden Contract
Terrible Tech-Strike
Terrible Tech-Strike
The Masadah

In play:
"By Any Means" (attached to Kismet)

Kismet (60)
In play:
The Talisman (1)
Shaky Arm (attached to Sky-Scraper)
Scattered Mind (attached to Sky-Scraper)

Dok'thorath Capital
Gene-Bound Ravagers (4)

Kalir go

Destroying that new Scattered Mind.

Also: using Catch a Ride on Chrono-Ranger so we can double-team Kismet. What damage reducer?

I'm then going to use Sneaking to play the Aggression Modulator on the Gene-Bound fellas and Compulsion Canister on Kismet (having her attack the Talisman), and then I'm returning Compulsion Canister to my hand.

I think I'll play Elbow Smash and hit Kismet for 3, then use Taiaha and hit her for 3 more and the Ravagers for 3 as well.

I'd advise against hitting the Ravagers while I have my Aggression Modulator on them. They can't hit us and hit Kismet and the Talisman harder.

I'll play my new Sudden Contract to pull "The Ultimate Target" out of my deck and put that on Kismet as well. Sudden Contract and Quick Shot deal a total of 6 damage to her.

All Kismet's extra damage from Ultimate won't matter if we burst her down fast enough.

EDIT: Until I say otherwise, any time The Ultimate Target lets me use a power, I'm using Quick Shot on Kismet. Just for speed. I'm going to get one use on her turn and probably another when Kalir reuses the Compulsion Canister.

Er, the Talisman is at 1, not 3 (post updated). Kalir's move would break it.

We could double-flip it if we don't feel like handing off the Talisman. But the more jinxes are out, the more the Talisman amplifies her default attacks, and we have enough multi-target attacks that we can reliably hot potato it, which is generally the best answer.
