I voted for Vagrant Story around the middle of my list - I had considered leaving off the year-2000 edge cases but went for it anyway. VS is an interesting case in that not only do I see why people have a hard time getting into, I had those problems myself to the extent that I've never actually beaten the game on my own. Instead I picked up a friend's NG+ save and loved the hell out of it. It's all about the atmosphere and aesthetics, which are just a mind-blowing use of the PS1's limited resources. Though honestly most of the game systems had a lot of promise, if only they were a little more streamlined and also crafting had like 95% less load time.

I somehow completely forgot about Mega Man 9 despite the recent talk due to the new collection announcement. Might've made my list if I hadn't, though not near the top, so it probably wouldn't have made a difference. It's definitely a very solid Mega Man at any rate.

Super Meat Boy is a great game that I've sunk a lot of time into; I probably should have put it on my list. One thing holding it back is that, even for me as a person who loves tough platformers, the top end there is just too hard, and if there were a little more on par with the end of the normal game, etc., I'd have liked it more. Or if there were more checkpoints to make long tough levels less frustrating.

I haven't really played Mega Man 9 (I should!) but I did enjoy 10. Probably not enough for it to make my list though. I haven't been playing nearly as many games recently as I did when I was in high school in the early 2000s, so my list is pretty front-loaded.

I haven't played nor do I have any desire to play any of the other games mentioned.

Is there a reason there's an "o" in the thread title rather than a "0"? I feel like it's a joke I'm not getting.

That was a typo. Thanks for catching it in time for me to fix it.

E3 season puts me into a betting mood, so I'm going to lock in my predictions:

"Out of my top 5, top 10 and top 25, how many will make TT's top 50?" I'm predicting: 1/5, 3/10 and 9/25.

I could see 2/5, but I'd be a little astonished at 3/5 or 5/10.

Also, nuts to the idea that your best games have to be validated! Let's all relish in the notion that we have accreted a sense of taste that is distinct from the most popular stuff.

~

Do we want to allow more specific predictions about the top 50 as a whole? Like which series will rank the most times, or what game will be number one?

I had Vagrant Story at #1. Perhaps not as strong a statement as it might seem, because I find gauging liking things in relative terms really difficult, but then again... I kind of like it.

Mega Man 9 is good but it's one of those games where I'm unable to invest very much personal meaning into it despite the craft, so at most it registers as a rather clinical positive assessment.

The most striking memory I have of Skies of Arcadia is how much incidental environmental descriptions there are of objects lying around. I am all about that.

Cross referencing the TT top 50 JRPG thread, here are the winners from that contest that were released (in the US) in year 2000 and onward (might be some errors):

50. Breath of Fire IV
49. Xenoblade Chronicles
48. Tales of Symphonia
46. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
44. Vagrant Story
43. Suikoden III
41. Valkyria Chronicles
39. Valkyrie Profile
36. Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer
34. Dragon Quest IX
33. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
31. Dragon Quest VIII
30. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
26. Etrian Odyssey IV
25. Chrono Cross
24. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
23. Skies of Arcadia
------------------------------------
22. Final Fantasy IX
21. Mother 3
20. Final Fantasy X
18. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
14. Undertale
8. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
7. Final Fantasy XII
6. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3

In theory, everything above Skies of Arcadia won't make it! (doubtful?) and Final Fantasy XII will win TT's best Final Fantasy of the millennium. (sounds about right, but perhaps not against FF15 this time...) I'm betting against Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter making the cut in this vote though.

Mega Man 9 should have been on my list. For some reason I didn't think of it, but it was definitely one of my fave games of the past 17 years.

When making my list, I tried to pick original 21st century franchises (or at least ones heavily changed by the move to HD graphics) and tried to limit the number of RPGs since we already had a whole list for them. I skewed heavily towards rhythm and goofy novelty games and didn't list a single Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Every DS/3DS game is 21st century! (Dammit I forgot to list Ouendan...)

I did have one recurring genre that makes up about a quarter of my list and I expect a few of those games to make the cut.

my list skewed heavily toward "you are the state, the state is violent" and "spent hundreds of hours playing this"

Mother 3 fell just short at #26 on my list. In spite of its reputation, I'd guess most haven't played it. The timing is messed up in emulators, so you really need a GBA flashcart to properly play it. That's a lot of expense and setup, even if it is one of the best games on the system. (See also Rhythm Tengoku)

Mega Man 9 is really good but it's fundamentally the same Mega Man we had in 1988. I gave votes to indie games that did something new instead.

Not really a good comparison. MOTHER 3's rhythm combos, while neat, are also completely incidental to the game. It's not a critical mechanic and the battles aren't balanced around them; its closest cousin would be, like, random fluctuation in damage. It's not crucial in the least and I'd hate to think it's put anyone off from playing such an excellent game.

What is this "criteria" you are talking about? I feel like I'm missing out on something that this top list thingy involves.

Generally speaking I don't vote on these things, but also I could have sworn Skies of Arcadia fell just outside the legal date range.

It was released in October 2000 in Japan. It qualifies, according to the rules.

I only could think of two games from 2000 (going by japanese release date) that are worth mentioning and those were Tales of Eternia and FantaVision EU. Only one of them made it on my final list, though.

There's no criteria past the rules Issun set out and your own personal judgment.
