Default Life at 60 FPS: Talking Time's Top 50 Games of the 21st Century

The votes are counted, the deadline is passed. 51 Tyrants voted for 505(!) individual games. No game got in with fewer than 128 points, and with fewer than 5 votes. I'm really excited you guys, this is a good list.

Now before we start, remember: We're celebrating the great games that came out over the last 17 years. If you have criticism of a game that's fine but please keep it civil, and if we can let's keep the pedantry to a minimum (I know I know, it's Talking Time). I'll be posting two entries a day, one early one late, through the first 40, then one a day for the top 10.

If you're wondering about Tyrant contributions this was my criteria:

With a couple of exceptions I only requested contributions for games in the top 30 so people would have time to write stuff, and kept it to games with less than three top votes, so as to avoid clutter.

So let's get this show on the road!

The full list will appear under this as it gets posted for easy linkin', Abraham:

HONORABLE MENTIONS

I spent a long time poring over what I should put here, and I finally decided on posting a few games that really surprised me by not making it. Starting with a game that nobody voted for:

#506: Super Meat Boy 0 Points, 0 Votes

Super Meat Boy is a tough-as-nails Indie Platformer with a delightfully sick sense of humor.

This game is not one of my favorites. I can see the appeal, it's a fun game. What shocked me is that it did not get one single vote. I expected it to show up here and there, maybe even place. Nope.

#87: Final Fantasy XIV 82 Points, 4 Votes

Final Fantasy XIV is a wildly popular MMORPG. After the middling success of FF XI and a horrible rollout for the first version of this game, Squenix got on the ball and reissued an almost completely rebuilt game appropriately subtitled: A Realm Reborn.

There's a pretty large and vocal FFXIV subcommunity here, but alas, not enough of them turned out for this contest.

#86: Mega Man 9 83 Points, 3 Votes

After seemingly being consigned to the dustbin of VG history, the Blue Bomber returned with an adventure that many ended up considering one of his finest. Inticreates scaled back from the more indulgent 7 & 8 and returned to Mega Man's roots.

This one really surprised me. The praise for this game was so universal I thought it might show up on more lists. I guess you just never know.

#83 Vagrant Story 87 Points, 3 Votes

Vagrant Story is as infamous for its inscrutable gameplay as it is admired for its gorgeous aesthetics and deep story. They say if you don't get it, you'll never like it, but if you put in the time and truly understand its multifaceted systems, you'll love it for life.

I guess I'm not too surprised about this one, but it does have an extremely devoted following on TT.

#59: Hotline Miami 117 Points, 4 Votes

This is a travesty.

#55 Skies of Arcadia 121 Points, 5 Votes

So close, yet so far. BEAT already said all there is to say in this thread.

Funnily enough, if BEAT had submitted a list, this game and Hotline Miami would most likely have placed.

#53: Minecraft 123 Points, 4 Votes

Minecraft is one of the biggest phenomenons of the decade. Not just in gaming, but in general. It is everywhere the way Mario was 30 years ago. The limits are your own imagination (and your ability to conserve resources if you're playing survival mode). I'd link to some of the crazy stuff people have built with this game, but you've likely seen them all already.

It does feel like a top games of the century list without Minecraft is missing something, but here we are.

Anyways, that's all for today. See you tomorrow for the actual Top 50! Now if you'll excuse me, Life is Strange didn't place either so PB and I are going to go get drunk now. Our beer will be garnished with the bitter tears of disappointment.

I think Minecraft's prime audience skews a bit young for TT.

It was on my shortlist, but while I loved creative mode when it first came out and we had that TT server, I haven't stayed with the game.

It was on my list too! Can... can I come?

ETA: Skies was one of my final cuts. Everything is my fault.

I think there's room at the table, yeah.

Also I already established everything is BEAT's fault, so pressure's off you.

Sorry, Skies & VS, I was just too lazy to look up edge cases for PSX and DreamCast games.

AT FIrst I was shocked that Mega Man 9 didn't make it, but then it started to make sense. I mean they didn't even put it on the Switch.

I had Skies at 3. It started much lower, but the more I thought about it the higher I moved it up. Mega Man 9 was the very last game I cut from my list.

Hotline Miami was 4 amazing hours of my life, but pretty much every game that made my list is something that I've spent much more time with than that.

I totally forgot about these, too! Though realistically, they would have made my top 30, but not my 25.

Four people voted for Hotline Miami? Four.

I would say you people have all your taste in your mouths but I've seen what you eat.

I knew going into this that one, or maybe zero, of my games would rank highly, but this is shocking, and awful. This is emotional terrorism. Please do better, The Return of Talking Time.

You should have voted it #1 on the sheer gravity of its aesthetics.

Oh, so a game needs at least 4 votes to get into the top 50. That means the chance that any of the games I voted for to show up is rather slim. I'll probably list my games later and ask if anyone has voted for any of them, because I'm really curious.

Of the honorable mentions:

Super Meat Boy - Only played it for 2 minutes and decided it isn't for me.

Vagrant Story - That's one of the games where I love the game idea, but find the execution horrible.

Skies of Arcadia - When I think of that game, I keep wondering why so many people like it. The first thing I think of when thinking of this game is that the battle were incredibly slow and boring. It didn't have much to dislike, but what does it have that people say it's a Top 25?

Never played any of the other games.

Hold off! Everyone shows their lists after #1 has been posted. Doing so beforehand is bad form.

im sorry, but the game is inferior in every way to my number #1, dial!, an all-ages rotary phone adventure.

I'm genuinely gobsmacked that Mega Man 9 and Skies of Arcadia didn't place.

Either everyone on TT has terrible taste or I've forgotten an awful lot of very good games.

It's got great characters, a cool world and some fun, interesting ideas, especially with the ship combat stuff and crew gathering. It's definitely rough, but it gets by on the potential of its ideas, if not their execution. Also, airships are objectively the second coolest thing ever. (The first coolest thing is lightsabers).
