Looking at release dates just cutting it off as Gamecube, XBox, PS2, Dreamcast, GBA and later would have been pretty damn close to being right and a lot clearer (arcade/PC would still be an issue). I'll just use that metric for my own list unless it produces an odd outlier.

I get where Issun is coming from because some people take dating seriously. I have one friend who gets absolutely mad when somebody points out that the year 2000 is not part of the 21st century.

People are weird, and I do think having a grey soft line instead of a hard black one will help people have more fun with this.

I'm so absolutely including the year 2000, because that was the Summer of Adventure and Chrono Cross...

If you want to include games from 2000 go ahead, but said game must have an original release date on or after January 1 2000, which means something like Chrono Cross is right out.
Oh!

Oh.

Oh, well, the good news is that I now have plenty of free slots in my list.

I just type everything in a text file, copying and pasting titles to rank them, then I paste the final list in a spreadsheet.

I just listed the first twenty five games that came to mind, in the order they came to mind.

I figure if I scrutinized any further I'd never get the list done.

And I'm listing games that may have had an original Japanese release of < 2000 purely because I can absolutely not be arsed to check that. *shrug*

Lots of text editors have this feature. Notepad2, for instance, lets you press "ctrl+shift+arrow key" to move an entire line up or down (swapping places with whatever line was there). And if you enable "display line numbers" you don't even need to worry about the numbering.

Does Shadowgate (2014) count? It is a remake of a game that is too old to count, but (I think) the 2014 version expanded the game, added new puzzles to the original areas and modified many of the reused puzzles.

I'm actually finding myself somewhat tempted to bias mine intentionally towards more recent games, just to emphasize the nature of this particular list as opposed to lots of our other stuff around here that often gravitates to the era from 16-bit through the early 00's...

I'm not sure, as I've never played the remake. I have gotten a small number of remakes so far that I feel are a little iffy, but I'm waiting to ask for the people submitting them to justify them until the final list. If they place, I'll be PMing everyone that voted for those games (and any others in the same wheelhouse that may show up) to explain why they think it should be on this list, but not until then. I don't want to be having people go to the trouble of explaining their choices for games that may or may not even show up.

So go ahead if you want. If it places and I'm not sure about it I'll let you know.

I've got more than 100 games on my short list, which makes me think I am using that term incorrectly.

Default the past was better edition

I'd be interested in sharing stats for our lists/tentative lists:

HTML Code:
years number of entries
2000+2001 2
2002+2003 7
2004+2005 5
2006+2007 4
2008+2009 2
2010+2011 2
2012+2013 2
...
2016 1
IPs that didn't exist before 2000: 7

(Don't look at me like that!)

Garou Mark of the Wolves was released on arcade in 1999, but came out on the Neo Geo/Dreamcast in 2000. I'm including it but what do y'all/mostly Issun think?

Is the console version notably different than the arcade version?

If not, then arcade games are video games too, so it would have a release date of 1999.

ok wait jeez i just noticed i made multiple typos at different points in this process

Code:
2000+2001 = 2 (both 2000)
2002+2003 = 2 (both 2002)
2004+2005 = 2 (both 2005)
2006+2007 = 2
2008+2009 = 2 (both 2008)
2010+2011 = 5
2012+2013 = 5 (four 2013)
2014+2015 = 3
2016+2017 = 1 (both 2016)
6 games represent series which existed before 2000. maybe 7 but if you're counting that it'd be the same series as one of the others.

i think i voted for three games that have any chance whatsoever of making a top 50

Would the remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for PSP be eligible?

Also, I figure the remake of Resident Evil on Gamecube is different enough to warrant being on the list?

I put Let Us Cling Together on my list and didn't need to change it so I assume it's fair game!

Leaving aside my seeming unhealthy obssession with 2007, I'm rather shocked at how even this split is. And sorely tempted to cut a couple of 2007 games and find a 2014 and 2017 game to nominate.

A couple of people + Wikipedia have made pretty good cases for the Tactics Ogre remake so I'm thinking that should be okay. Don't know enough about REmake yet to know for sure how different it was.

Just a reminder: Diablo II was one of the top games released in 2000.
