Thanks. It's been bugging me all season.

This season is really good, by the way. Definitely no Legend of Korra sophomore series sinker.

He even uses it to cut Shiro's restraints free in the first episode.

That's cos Netflix is entirely handsoff.

Wild mass bull shitting appears

1. It is revealed that Keith is able to bond with all the lions and all at once simultaneously. Eventually he will pilot all of the lions all at once by himself with the lions transformed and as separate lions. Also blah blah galra heritage blah blah

2. It is revealed that Matt is not only safe but he has also joined another resistance group against Galra. He currently pilots a vehicle that is part of a series of experimental vehicles that specialises in aerial, land based and sea based combat; it can also combine into a giant robot. His vehicle is an aerial ship. He is known by his buddies as "Chip".

3. It is found out that Shiro disappeared because he was absorbed into the black lion and eventually finds his way into the castle computer thus taking the guidance role that was formerly's King Alfor. Either that or he is trapped in Zarkon's head and is currently fighting him for control. He would eventually win and, with Zarkon's body, fight with the rest of the team against Prince Lotor.

4. Allura will not get the opportunity to pilot the blue, red or any lion because she is overtaken by Shiro's long lost twin brother slash clone that was never hinted at before but somehow shows up out of nowhere.

5. Corran falls into another time loop and when he finally gets out, he is permanently in a younger stage of himself one that doesn't even age so he outlives even Allura or the Voltron itself.

6. The giant robot from Korra S4 makes an appearance and retroactively ruins the entire Voltron series. Because.

7. Sept is definitely much more preferable to Jan 2018.

Also, I'm still surprised that S1's reception was good enough for Netflix to give another 2 seasons because S3 will have to be done while S2 is still being made as 6 slash 7 months after S2 releases is not a lot of time for 13 episodes... well good episodes.

Looks like my efforts to savour this sweet, sweet morsel lasted a month and a half. A solid 7 months less than it should have. Man!

The last episode also shot down my theory that Hagger is Keith's mother. I also almost clapped my hands when the Blazing Sword appeared.

A random selection of episodes from the original series, chosen by the cast and crew of Legendary Defender, have been collected on Netflix.

This will prove insufficient to tide me over until season 3, but I appreciate the gesture!

Starting with the first episode and uh

Does Pidge really have this voice through the whole show? It sounds like an offensive parody of the way modern Pidge speaks from the back of her throat. And it looks like it doesn't fit the anime footage at all, as if some producer in the 80s said "this little girl wants to kiss Allura, can't have any of that".

Yeah, Voltron really did not age well.

One of the episodes is one of the ones I had on VHS when I was tiny, noted for having Hagger very pointedly murder a whole bunch of people by setting them all on fire and saying "My stun spell will make you sleep!"

The key thing to remember about OG Voltron is that Pidge is both a boy and also The Worst. Also, Aluras job is to faint a lot. And Coran isn't voiced by Rhys Darby and is thus worth nothing to me. And the animation team rarely remembered they were supposed to be animating something.

On the other hand, all the bad guys travel in flying coffins instead of spaceships and put skulls on everything, and also Peter Cullen Narration.

Yeah, I tried to watch some original Voltron a few years back and pretty much the only entertaining thing was identifying every time they edited out violence or death, i.e. approximately every two minutes. Got old pretty quick.

I've been watching this! Some thoughts I left in the Cartoon thread:

As a girl who spends a lot of time disguised as a boy myself, I identify with Pidge a lot.

I happened to see a clip from the original show on Twitter or something yesterday, and my three observations are:

1. I'm surprised how close the character designs in Legendary Defender are to the original.

2. Judging from the 60-second clip I saw, which is of course not much but still, the two characters who mostly maintained their personalities in LD are Lance and Keith - the former is still a brash horndog and the latter is taciturn and probably gay.

3. JESUS CHRIST PIDGE'S VOICE

I dunno, I thought the personalities in LD were pretty spot-on, save for Coran. They're just, like, not horribly written now. The whole show feels like "what if we re-did Voltron? But this time, it doesn't suck."

All of the characters from Voltron are familiar archetypes in Japanese cartoons. Take a look at this picture from the similar Voltes V... the five pilots match up almost perfectly with their Voltron/GoLion counterparts.

By the way, Voltes V was big in the Philippines the way that Voltron was here in the US. Apparently, it even factored into the revolt against dictator Ferdinand Marcos!

I went looking for GoLion to see how it stacks up against 80s Voltron, and the first thing that strikes me is how they censored way more than just dialogue. Earth nukes itself to death, Galra slavers openly flog their prisoners, Shiro dies after just a few episodes and never comes back, and GoLion itself was once an unbeatable robot god who got so cocky it tried to challenge the goddess of the universe and was smacked down immediately.
And no amount of whores can fill the Allura-shaped hole in Lotor's heart because he actually has a massive oedipus complex and her face is the closest thing he can get to mommy.
Oh, and Pidge even has a proper voice actress, which combined with her character design and mannerisms mean the only clue she's a boy in this version is when the narrative insists on it. And that's even with the airbrushed muscle padding of the original jumpsuits!

Legendary Defender pulls a lot of this into itself and tries to reconcile it with the American add-ons, including what you thought you were watching until the dialogue tried so desperately to walk it all back.

The Voltron Force members abide to what I like to call "sentai color theory".

RED - Handsome, tenacious, kind of boring
BLUE - The hotshot, ace, "super cool bad boy"
GREEN - The newbie, cadet, kid. Standard nerd.
YELLOW - Courageous, fiercely protective of his friends. A big guy who likes to eat.
PINK - The girl. No other personality traits.

Add to that way more blood and gore, Hys/Nanny being killed by being shot right in the heart. The "robeasts" are created by sorcery--er, "occult science", an entire village is razed by fire and a river flows with blood. The Galra soldiers are explicitly not robots (and the mice actually blow one of their heads off)..

If you're only familiar with the original, it can definitely seem as pretty unnecessary. Although, viewed with a larger historical and cultural context, it seemed obvious that they probably were "inspired" by earlier sentai series, and used the animation medium to amp things up a bit. I'm not familiar with the 70's/80's sentai stuff, but I know they generally could get pretty dark, did not skimp on character death, and would frequently feature heavy mystical and occult elements. Fine for Japanese kiddies, but would blow the yankies' minds.

Later cartoons and shows would obvious crib from the same sources (Gatchaman, Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors, even Sailor Moon), but GoLion shows its work perhaps more blatantly than most.

I watched this! Or, to be more accurate, I started watching this while my girlfriend was around, and after about 6 episodes she took over and made us watch the rest in rapid succession. I am a Child of Voltron, in that I was like 7 years old when the series was at the peak of its popularity in the 80s and I used to love it dearly, but I had forgotten almost everything about the original in the intervening years. Suffice to say that the remake is WAY BETTER than the original, even if I wouldn't induct it into the Canon of Great Animated Series (alongside stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Avatar TLA and Steven Universe). The plotting and pacing are a little uneven, some elements are introduced or resolved in a way that feels very hurried, but the animation and characters are great. After the big cliffhanger at the end of season 2, we're both looking forward to the launch of season 3 in the fall.

Also, after finishing the last episode last night, I decided to put on one of the old Voltron eps and those are GARBAGE. Holy shit, I had some very low standards for entertainment when I was a young'un.

The TV Trope for this is known as the Five-Man Band, and is basically exactly as you described it.

Season 3, coming August 4th!?!?

Also Season 4 coming in October. Both will be shorter in length, but I guess we'll be getting seasons more frequently as a result? I guess??

Nice. Sorta. I'm all about more episodes sooner, but shorter more frequent seasons means I'll have to reactivate my Netflix subscription more often if I want to keep up.

Just finished s2. Glad I paced myself. I'd hate to be mulling over that ending as much as you all.

I still think we're going to see Vehicle Voltron at some point.
