Loki,

I must reassure you that pantaloons falling to the ground is amongst the most serious and erudite subject material from the electronic amusement product known as The Superb World of Mario Mario Esq., Part the Second: The Island of the Yoshis. I would advise you refrain from further impugning the honour of my good friend Burt the Bashful, lest I be compelled to tell of your slanderous behaviors to my dear mother.

Sincerely,
RT

Even Batman couldn't thwart Phanto.

Keep in mind, we masked folk hate losing our stuff.

I love this.

I voted Phanto #1, and clearly this discussion was worth the highest nod I could give in this contest. For me, Phanto was one of the earliest enemies that really left an imprint (scarred, perhaps) on my young kid self, and when I think of standard foes Phanto tends to roll up pretty high on my list there, too. In terms of Mario canon, nothing comes close for me.

Goombella was in the middle of my list. She's pretty great.

#14 Captain Toad
First Appearance: Super Mario Galaxy 2007
272 points, 12 nominations

One day, some toad, just a toad, strapped a light to his cap, holstered a backpack, and self-stylized himself a captain. In doing so he distinguished himself as one of just a small handful of toads with a uniqueness. I won't say a unique personality 'cause he's just like all the rest, just he's a kerchief now.

Captain toad was the captain of the inept Toad Brigade in Mario Galaxy, a role he reprised in the sequel. Then in Mario 3D he was kinda a joke gimmick where you had to navigate levels without the ability to jump. This proved so successful it was spun off into it's own game, which I gotta say is just delightful. Ya did something right for once Cap.

The jump button in Treasure Tracker is right up there with A Boy and His Blobs Hug Button and Vanquishs Smoke Button for being my favourite things added to a video game.

#13 Toad
First Appearance: Super Mario Bros. 1985
279 points, 11 nominations

These frogs are the bread and butter generics of the Mushroom Kingdom, and forever player 4 in party games. Mario 2 distinguished Toad as "the one that digs fast" but even that small character trait was scrubbed away. Toad's as teflon as they come. A smooth and simple smurf made to take up space. His generictude is so prevalent that Toads compromising the secondary cast of the recent Paper Mario games is cited as the main reason they don't compare to the earlier ones. And here is at #13. Guess ya'll really like vanilla.

Bonus:#146 F.L.U.D.D.
First Appearance: Super Mario Sunshine 2002
30 points, 2 nominations

Why are the ocean levels rising up? Why are people walking hand in hand? It's the brand new Mario. For 2002.

Had to do a bonus to get Sunshine on the list. It's almost like people don't like this game or something. F.L.U.D.D. is the cool belt that talks like a pro-Fi and let's Mario soar through the air. That's got to be worth something at least, right?

If nothing else without F.L.U.D.D. we wouldn't have Splatoon presumably.

Who else voted FLUDD?

I voted for it in part due to being a permanant part of Mario's Smash Bros move set.

If anyone is confused by the hairy legs Toad, watch the Please Retweet Saga, a series of dumb internet videos about a picture of Toad with hairy legs in a diaper.

#12 Bob-omb
First Appearance: Super Mario Bros. 2 1988
283 points, 12 nominations

These delightful little eggs have become one of Mario's most iconic enemies. Interestingly, they debuted in Mario 2, and then showed up in Mario 3, making them one of the first 2 baddies to cross the Mushroom Kingdom gap. They're also the best part of The Super Mario Bros The Movie and Scott Pilgrim. There's just no denying the appeal of a bomb on legs.

#11 Rosalina
First Appearance: Super Mario Galaxy 2007
299 points, 11 nominations

Rosalina is a little girl who ran away to space and became a princess of space and also the mother of space. Space mom! She's one of the most technical smash bros as she flings her child to knock about monkeys and such. Here's a fun fact! Lumas only got one vote. Fun!

Bonus:#165 Pionpi
First Appearance: Super Mario Land 1989
26 points, 1 nomination

In Super Mario Land, Mario visits many lands. Each land is based on a land. A real land! And one of those lands is the Chai Kingdom. This means the "Tea Kingdom" I'm lead to believe. And as can be inferred from its name it is based on India China. So it stands to reason that one of the enemies here are the famed hopping Chinese vampires Jiangshi. We're all familiar with Mr. Vampire, right? Well then you know all about how these life-draining undead hop about with their arms outstreched, like a cross between a classic zombie and a pogo-stick. How ironic that this hoping foe would be hoped on. By Mario. The hopping guy who's also known for hoping.

Damned, I merely voted for Bob-Omb, as opposed to Bomb-Omb, the latter of whom, according to the Mario wiki, is described as "No results found".

Seriously, though Bob-Ombs are super great and adorable. They are death on two legs (errr... feet) and they are just happy to be there. I assume. Without mouths and those wide-eyed stares, I think we need to assume a lot.

EDIT: I should point out, I also called them Bomb-ombs when I was a kid. But I was a very stupid child.

Please, Mr. Vampire is that movie's father's name. Call him Zhang Wei. (The film then proceeds to turn a chair backwards and it on it so you can "rap" about your feelings).

I specifically voted for every Bob-omb except for the one in the last level of Mario 2 that is in the room with the potion, and you can never remember which one's which, and it's got like a quarter-second fuse so that you pull the wrong one and die instead of getting the mushroom.

Not cool, Mario 2.

Also, re: Toad, he still gets to be the fastest runner in Mario 3D World, so at least he does have one trait.

I never realized until just now that it's Bob-omb.

What a stupid name.

It's fine tho. To True Doom Murderheads they'll always be known as B-bombs.

I forgot there were jiangshis in that game! This is why Weird Mario games are the best.

Also, bob-ombs are vicious. Remember when they killed Dennis Hopper?

Cute, explosive, motile. What's not to love about a bob-omb?

*extremely 'if a dog wore pants' voice* so how do you emphasize the syllables in its name, do you say 'BOB-omb' or 'bob-OMB'

And then come back to die happy again.
