Have I been eating meatballs wrong all my life? Were they secretly fingerfood all along? Do they go as well with sweet and sour sauce as they do with red spaghetti sauce? Is it ok to demand from my waiters and waitresses that the meatballs be served on the side so I can dunk them in sauce on my own instead of coming pre-lathered? I'm not being facetious btw, this might be a life altering moment for me.

But how else would you cook them, if not in a frying pan? A grill isn't going to give them that nice crust. And it seems to me that an oven would dry them out.

I've never heard of eating meatballs with one's fingers, but then I'm also used to thinking of them specifically as food to be cooked within sauces, almost as one might make a stew. Not finger food, but they are toothpick food (I believe the highfalutin French term is "horse devvers").

They're too greasy to be finger food, but I've seen small, compact ones served on a toothpick, sauce on the side all the time as an hors d'ouerve.

edit: ninja'd!

Sweet and sour meatballs are literally my favourite meatballs.

I've baked them before, but those were massive softball-sized meatballs that were more like single-serving meatloaves.

You know, I probably should have clarified that a bit. I guess pan-frying is frying. I was implying deep-frying, you know, the way you cook nuggets.

I've had boiled meatballs, baked meatballs, grilled meatballs, and pan-fried meatballs (which still lose a lot of their juices/fat). Probably the best meatballs are the boiled ones.
