Dropped a save state before grinding objets for gil.

Got all the way to Moore Forest, reach to disable the tree layer so I could see.

So is there an AI script for the Sandworm floating around somewhere? It really seems like once you hit him like, at all, he just stops using physicals altogether and does nothing but spam Quicksand, which I just cannot get on top of with potions. Is there some clever Hide strats I can employ, or do I just have to go farm Elixirs? I don't want to farm Elixirs.

EDIT: Stone Golems, which can be fought by Istory, die instantly to Gold Needles and can drop Hi-Potions (6.25% odds). I looked through the entire bestiary and that's my only non-thief option. I still don't like it. =(

There is, but it requires a bit of explanation.

Three things have scripts in that fight: The Sandworm, the Holes, and an unnamed entity. The following three blocks are those listed, in order. I've also included each thing's speed, so you can get an idea of what order things go in.

So... Is this just saying he has a flat 2/3 chance to use Quicksand every single turn? Because holy fuck he gets a ton of turns, and he also seems to be using Quicksand very very very much more than probability states he should be.

Yeah that's basically what it's saying. It also says that it gets into a pattern of "move, move, move, fight" separately from its normal turns.

pudding farming in Nethack was less boring

EDIT: It just occurred to me. The Golems don't "actually" die straight up. They counterattack Gold Needles with the Vanish spell, which kills them. I THINK that means they're still eligible to drop potions, but I fear that you might have to chip them down, 14 damage at a time, in order to get the 6.25% chance at a drop. Oh, and they have 1000 HP. It's like a mini-Adamantoise.

If you have a save before the ship just farm hi poitions there with freelancers/farm Zus for elixirs.

Hi-Potions are a steal on the ship, not a drop.

Your best bet for elixir farming is the Wind Shrine, surprisingly; the Moldwynds drop them.

Anywho, Laularu, the Vanish counter does indeed allow drops. It is, for all intents and purposes, as though you killed them.

He probably mastered it ages ago; it only requires 175 ABP from start to finish.

It's tied with Geomancer for "least expensive job".

yeah somehow I thought there was new equipment between Sandwuss and Adamanterror. There's not, unless you count the Mage Mashers in Jachol, which I picked up four of after flying Boko MkII to the forests near Jachol.

Time to go grind Elixirs! =(

Yeah, but I wanted to have a full set as a just-in-case for shitty future bosses.

Anyway! ROUND ONE: AN INVINCIBLE TURTLE VS FOUR BARDS, THREE MAGE MASHERS, ONE MAIN GAUCHE, FORTY PHOENIX DOWNS, TWENTY FIVE ELIXIRS, AND ZERO HOPE.

FIGHT!

...

oh god 8 fucking damage out of a mage masher at level 23?!

I knew it'd be bad but I didn't think it'd be QUITE this bad. Oh boy.

So the good news is that ALL he does is physicals, and sitting in the back row means he can't one-shot me unless he levels a twin attack on the same target. That means I don't need 99 Elixirs, I need 99 Phoenix Downs, since a character is only likely to eat two hits from full HP, and that's after regen song, before the third takes them to the ground.

The bad news is that it means I spent way too much time farming Elixirs for no good reason =(

EDIT: Still in the midst of the first fight. This fight actually has two other things going for it that actually make it easier than Sandworm, despite how it was hyped up more: not only does he have a 100% predictable AI script--attack once, then attack twice, repeat--but ALL he does is physicals. That means I can take advantage of strategically timed !Guard and cut the overall DPS way down, and since I'm not getting repeatedly tagged with AOE Sap, I can actually make use of the Regen Song. It also feels like a war of strategy and attrition, rather than just an unabashed XP-gate with a bit of RNG thrown in for extra salt.

EDIT 2: ADAMANTOISE DOWNED ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT! FUCK YOU HATERS, FUCK YOU DOUBTERS, FUCK YOU FIESTA, AND FUCK YOU BARDS! I AM THE GOD OF FINAL FANTASY!

World 2 down. Got lucky with the Exdeath fight, Krile was level 24 and I had one reflect ring I had given her, along with a main gauche, so she could sit in the back row on hi potion duty. Seeing those level 3 flares bounce back was pretty great! Also Bartz dodged about 5 Vacuum Waves in a row, which was good because gil toss was our only real phase 2 damage since Lenna dodged a Dynamo and was stuck berserking in the back row and Faris was also mostly on potion duty.

meanwhile, Team Turdmancer is stuck at Atomos, because "what's a DPS?"

I can't even seem to !Hide his MP out, because with all four characters either wormholed or hidden, he seems to just be content to spam his suction move instead of trying to launch comets. And for some reason, I thought reviving a character reset their position, but it definitely doesn't get them any farther away from Wormhole, putting a hard clock on the fight that I can't really deal with, other than just hold down the Dance button and pray for some stupid lucky Sword Dances. (Hint: That's not happening.)

Swift Song doesn't even help me with the clock, because the timer on the fight means I can't just dick around and boost speed to 99 before engaging, and until the effect really gets up there, it's not very noticeable. =(

Oh, and he's conveniently immune to 2/3 of !Gaia's outcomes, because Reasons.

Hide will work. His AI script for pulling includes spells sometimes, so just hold fast-forward for like an hour.

It does, but when a spell is cast while everyone's hidden, it pops the name up, which it hadn't been doing for Atomos. I know this because I did a lot of hit-and-run vs Soul Cannon.

I set it to perma-fastforward and run-in-background, and I'll check back in a few hours to see if it worked.

You could just go with the solo method of killing off one person, letting them almost get dragged in, and then swapping who is dead? I don't see how you wouldn't land enough sword dances for you to eventually win.

You severely underestimate this party's DPS, even with Sword Dance.

That being said, I did eventually drain his MP, and now that just leaves the fucking Crystals. Gaia's doing some work for me, more reliably than Sword Dance, but I really need the Sword Dances to come out when I get Earth or Water down to phase 2, and it's just not coming out. I got the Water Crystal to 412HP before it wiped me, and it was just painful to reset. The Firagas and Aerogas never seem to bounce onto the right targets, and Tempting Tango feels like it has way more than a 25% castrate. I could probably stall the fight until I get 99 AGI, but that seems really boring. I THINK I can drain the Water Crystal with Hide, but I definitely can't do that to the Earth Crystal and that does reduce my DPS, since two bards means I can only bring in a maximum of 6 DPS commands, one of which MUST be Dance. It's not great.

Decided on a bit of a whim to do a fourth run this weekend, going with Natural Pure Chaos



That was ... not so tough. I got three classes I hadn't seen yet this year though, so it was still a fun go of things.
