More new zones would be better, but Sonic Pocket Adventure was basically Sonic 1/2 remixed with new level layouts and it ended up being pretty baller.

Just like 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. 3 is different from 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. or New Super Mario Bros., this Green Hill Zone Act 1 is different from the ones in Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Generations.
One thing that is lost in revisiting old zones is the possibility of new traversal gimmicks. By that I mean Hill Top's see-saws, Mushroom Hill's swings, Studiopolis's radio antennae, and so on—the unique means of interacting with the environment, which go a long way to giving each zone a unique design sense. From the footage we've seen of Green Hill, it's not adding anything new here—just making new arrangements with the existing Green Hill toy box. So there's a tangible, mechanical difference between revisiting old zones and making all-new ones, even if the level designs are new in both cases.

I don't think we've seen enough to know that for sure. Green Hill/Emerald Hill/etc. are usually pretty vanilla, gimmick-wise, with the exception of loops and corkscrews we sometimes see in later levels anyway (the corkscrews are from Emerald Hill in Sonic 2, so that's technically mixing things up already). I wouldn't consider it a great metric by which to gauge that sort of thing.

(And I don't think Mushroom Hill counts, given the unique situation surrounding it.)

We've already seen the addition of a cave region into Green Hill, and it wouldn't surprise me if they mixed things up more and introduced other ideas into the mix in the more advanced stages.

At the worst, I think we're in a "wait and see" position for how further stages are handled.

Don't get me wrong. I still hype.

I just thought we might be getting something fully new and this feels a little disappointing as a result. :I

We knew Green Hill was there from the very beginning, though?

I wonder how big the levels will be in Mania. Sonic 1-3 are similar aesthetically and mechanically but the size of the levels makes them feel pretty different.

Sonic 1: Big levels
Sonic 2: Really big levels
Sonic 3: Uh...where do I go?

Truth. We didn't know the game was more retread than new, though. That's the cause for my slight dehyping

On the plus side I sure wouldn't mind seeing Ice Cap again, and maybe a Metropolis Zone that wasn't designed by a sadist.

Sonic 1/2 is the one where he turns into a girl when he touches cold water, right?

Sonic & Tails
K.T.E.

This game continues to be very Sonic CD.

The same could be said of Sonic Generations, too, though, and it was basically the only great Sonic game released in the last twenty years for a while.

Oh yeah, the other one.

I didn't see much Sonic 1 in it. It was basically Sonic 2 Remix. However, yes, it was shocking to me how much better it felt than the Advance games. I never thought the Advance/Rush games ever held a candle to Pocket Adventure.

Incidentally, I'd love to know why those haven't come to Wii U Virtual Console outside of Japan yet.

Those gun sprites look fine. Blast Processing + Mode 7!!

Mirage Saloon seems to be heavily evoking the long-lost Dust Hill Zone. I love those silly little hooked-bird-beaks on the pinball paddles. Oh, hey, there's a poster of Fang! (And others, I guess).

They also finally got Knuckles' color right.

I love how completely stupid that gun thing is in that stage. I also quite like the use of blanket patterns for a lot of reasons that would fill up too much space here to explain. It's also nice to see the sprites from Chaotix make a return, or at least serve as a very obvious base for this game's sprite art

I think a few of the backgrounds were more visually influenced by Sonic 1 (Neo South Island Zone and Gigantic Angel Zone come to mind). But yeah, it was basically Sonic 2 remix, with some end-game elements take from Sonic & Knuckles.

It ruled

UPDATE: I like the gun hand, too. They should retroactively add the gun hand to every released Sonic game. You should never go a screen without seeing a gun hand.

I'll do a mock-up later.

It looks out of place but I like its quirkiness or goofiness, I suppose. It fits in with the aesthetic.

The sprites do seem a bit odd to me as well. I think just putting a little more effort into the effect would go a long way.

For example, making the hand and sliding seem more mechanical (or just be the gun itself, without a hand) and adding a particle effect on shoot.

Guys, I hate that I think this looks kind of like it might be bad. The level design so far has been out of whack, and the new stage looks like a Sonic CD stage seemingly without the time travel hook. I just, I dunno. I'm losing the hype. The stages we've seen look either empty (Studiopolis, Saloon) or just bad (Green Hill remix full of wacky shit that doesn't work).

I wanted this to be good.

The fact is even if it's bad I will 100% it several times, possibly on more than one system. Because I have Sonic Mania.

I thought you were supposed to wait until the new Sonic game was actually out before declaring it an unforgivable atrocity.
