Top 4 games my cousins had that I coveted, all on the Super Nintendo:

Bubsy
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Some Jurassic Park game
Also, another game, with cavemen and dinosaurs?

I think the main issue with "top whatever" lists for me is that I really only have four favorite games, and then another lower tier of twenty or thirty games that I really like, but don't quite reach that level for me. So whenever I'm asked to do more than four, the games outside the four always shift around based on what I've played or thought about most recently or what I'm most nostalgic for at the moment. Honestly, I probably only picked Persona 4 in this iteration because I was posting in the Persona 5 thread moments earlier.

I think the only thing I can actually confidently say is my "top whatever" is TV show: 30 Rock.

With me it's funny because I don't think much - even games I've put 50+ hours into - has come close to cracking my list in a while (it'd have to be something pleasantly small-scale like FTL). I'd have to think a LOT harder about games from the last 10 years than the 95 - 05 stretch.

yeah, there's too many things i like for too many different reasons to truly solidify any kind of permanent favorites. i am of course completely sincere whenever i say i love something...but juca's reaction is still the kind of thing i was hoping for, haha

Interesting. I'm the exact opposite. There are a ton of games that I would have ranked as my favorites when I was a kid but have a hard time squeezing onto top lists because my tastes have drifted so much in the intervening time.

Actually, I have no attachment to VPW or any of its kin. I never had an N64.

the only potential competition to Def Jam in the realm of grappling-based videogames would be Fire Pro Wrestling S 6 Men Scramble.

Also a fun historical footnote because it's the most successful Net Yaroze project. One of the last commercially viable garage games until the dawn of the modern indie era more than a decade later.

Shit, yeah, I need to give that a try (again).

My top 2 are Suikoden II and Super Metroid, and Mega Man X is probably also in the top 5, but I can't really narrow it down beyond that.

In no order:

Mega Man X 1-3: No, I don't care, they're one game to me. I don't play Mega Man X and NOT play the other two.

Smash Bros 4: Only competitive game I've gotten close to serious about; loved them since the 64 but never had decent practice until I could play online with this one.

Shovel Knight + Plague of Shadows: Shovel Knight was very good, and Plague's mechanics pushed it well beyond that. As a complete package, they're one of the best possible gaming experiences.

Rockman 4 Minus Infinity: Some of the most raw fun I've had with a platformer. This romhack was made for me.

Portal 2
Mega Man 2
Metroid Prime
SaGa 2 / Final Fantasy Legend 2
Legend of Zelda

Undertale and Fez are both very close. I wish they were more replayable.

EDIT: I immediately went, "Wait, Katamari Damacy," but OH WELL

Here's a list of the games that entered my life at exactly the right moment for me to get maximum enjoyment out of them:

Carmageddon 2
Unreal Tournament

For me, the defining moments of these games were...

...skipping the Gravity Suit for the first time. (Super Metroid)
...momentum throttling laps 2 and 3 of Cosmo Terminal. (F-Zero GX)
...beating the boss of Area F with my bare fists. (Shatterhand)
...1CCing it on hard mode. (Contra III: The Alien Wars)
...trying out dozens of fangames, thinking of my own idea for a fangame, making two boards, and then realizing how uncreative I was being with this limitless tool. (ZZT)

Narrowing it down to 5 is too difficult. 10 would be slightly easier.

In no particular order:

Soul Blazer
Earthbound
Final Fantasy IV (SNES FF2)*
Chrono Trigger
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night*

*These games are on rotation at any given moment with Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3, World of Warcraft, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Final Fantasy VI, and Bioshock. I could probably do a pros and cons and come up with a definitive listing but thankfully I don't have to.
