Is there measurable daylight between Magical Drop and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine?

Buddy of mine used to play Mean Bean with his mom all the time as a kid. When he moved on to other games, she bought herself a Genesis and kept playing. Nonstop, for years. So when Puyo Pop Fever came out, she annihilated everyone. It wasn't even close. Just this lady in her 50s kicking the shit out of all comers.

This list has been pretty set in stone since Portal came out, and will probably remain this way:

Final Fantasy IV
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Vandal Hearts
Phantasy Star
Portal

Metal Gear Solid 3
Super Metroid
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (or Ghost Trick, i don't know)
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (yes, not a popular one, but it is so much fun to play on the hard difficulty, and i don't care for its flaws)

FF6
Mega Man 2
Chrono Trigger
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

And my fifth is... LIFE FORCE, for the NES. Yeah, that's right, frickin' LIFE FORCE. No one ever puts that on a top five list, probably not even a top ten list, but you know what? This game is amazing. The soundtrack absolutely rips. The graphics pushed the limits of the hardware, and the spritework was top-notch. The gameplay is smooth, the enemies are widely varied, the levels have interesting mechanics, and the bosses are huge, menacing, and really damn cool. I love this game. I've loved it since I acquired it as a child, and honestly I still play it relatively frequently. Yeah, I could say Super Metroid, SOTN, Final Fantasy Tactics, Megaman X, Dark Souls, Link to the Past, etc. But can I honestly say I've spent as much time enjoying those games as much as LIFE FORCE? No. I can't. Every second of playing Life Force is a second of pure joy. The game never lulls, the game is absolutely playable all the way through. I can't say that about most any game. Every game has a slog of a level, a horrible boss, or some dumb part of it that isn't fun to play. Life Force though? Every level. Every boss. Every upgrade. Every song in the soundtrack. Everything. About. This. Game. Is. Perfect.

Where am I even supposed to start on this one?!

Uh... okay. Random amazing five (first three are absolute locks):

Chrono Trigger
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Kirby's Adventure

I'm trying to not list all RPGs and Zelda games. I'm tempted to put a Metroid as well, but I'm filling that gap with Symphony.

If you give me a second five, I'd go with:

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Metroid: Zero Mission
Final Fantasy III
Terranigma

And I'm not even sure that's right! Gaaah!

Love your passion for Life Force, narcodis! Your post reminded me of a "NES Challenge" I took part in on another forum, years ago. Goofing around on Life Force's final stage a few minutes into that vid. :P

Radiant Dawn really is one of the best IMO. This is weird, and I don't know if anyone has ever said this before, but Jerid is one of the best villains in the series. He's weirdly believable and somehow doesn't feel generic when he so easily could've been like 80% of other FE baddies.

If Radiant Dawn removed every mission (or even just half) where you played as Micaiah's Band Of Losers, it would probably be on my top 5. But as it stands, I must defer to PoR, a much more consistent game.

  • Spelunky
  • Dark Souls
  • DmC: Devil May Cry
  • Shiren the Wanderer
  • Heroes of Might & Magic III

The first four are pretty set, but depending on my mood, the fifth slot could have easily been any of:
  • Gladius
  • Might & Magic: World of Xeen
  • Baldur's Gate 2
  • Super Metroid
  • Brogue
  • Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
  • King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame

Honestly, my biggest problem with the game is that it reaaaally runs out of steam at the last bit when you're going up the tower. It really could've been like 3 missions shorter.

I love the parts where you're forced to use the crappier teams and a lot of the Dawn Brigade can actually be really great. My personal favourite part is the chapter where you play as the Knight Boys and get to wreck with Kieran once again.

Since the chapters of Micaiah's team on part III are the hardest in the game, i like them quite a bit. They're insane, but there's only a few - and it's such a relief to be back to Ike's team. I might be a masochist, i don't know. I also like how part I could be its own Fire Emblem game and then shit happens.

There's actually one flaw of the game that bothers me, though: there's too much obligatory units.

In a storytelling perspective, i think this is my favorite Fire Emblem - it still is bland anime fantasy/war, but there's some nice twists, and i don't know, i consume so much weird media that it was a breath of fresh air to consume something so, erm, normal.

EDIT:

Ah, yes, this too. The last chapters are really boring - if you have strong units, they're painfully easy, if not, you just abuse laguz royals and they're also easy. Having floors with great stat boosts ain't a fun mechanic, too.

This is what I love so much about RD. It actually does new things and plays around with wacky shit.

I also adore the height mechanic.

Bring all that discussion back into the Fire Emblem thread! I much prefer Path of Radiance and the Fire Emblem game on my list of five to Radiant Dawn.

In no particular order:
Link's Awakening
Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword
Pokemon Crystal
DotA (2)
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

The fifth position could easily be replaced by:
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Wario Land 2, 3, or 4
Super Mario World

And there's a few more bubbling under that I love just because of their soundtracks (FEZ, Hyper Light Drifter) that don't deserve to be on that list but are fantastic, too.

Hm.

Mega Man 2
X-Com

Those two went on without thinking.

NHL 94 [YOU GET YOUR "NHLPA 93 WAS BETTER" BULLSHIT OUT OF MY SIGHT]

WWF No Mercy (The best N64 game. Period.)

Civ... II? Yeah, let's go with II. This is my "swing" slot and could easily be occupied by three of the first four Civ games, either of the first two Master of Orions, Alpha Centauri, Tetris, Super Metroid, the Pirates remake, SimGolf, Mario 3, Madden 04, TIE Fighter, or a few others.

(Oh, shit, should that last one be Zelda 3? I don't know if it's my favourite as much as Civ II.)

This was... anticipated (I originally had a joke about how you'd try to beat me to death with either DJFFNY or Virtua Wrestling 2 for saying No Mercy ahead of them, but I scrapped it)

I also like the height mechanic.

In the last chapters, though, the twist on the maps is that there are some floors that give you five points of attack or magic or defense. I'm not fan of that mechanic, and it was that that i was refering to, in case you understood wrong: it doesn't make sense in a enviromental sense like height, and it is a little too obvious how to proceed.

Maybe it's just that i've been playing the game for a long time when i'm in these chapters and too accustumed to its mechanics. I guess the worst chapters are the the first chapters you play when you split your teams and the first chapter on the Tower - the game would be better without these, i think.

The game isn't made to a one-on-one duel like Ike vs Black Knight too. Ah, well. Even though the game is flawed i still love it.
