That bar was never really meant to be seen in the first place, since the crappy ol' tube screen TVs with RF adapters would cut off the sides of the picture.

I thought he meant the extra chunky status menu at the bottom of the screen in SMB3

I'm excited as hell for this. Looking forward to STTBU

I do hope their idea of having a music maker is still in the cards. That would be nice.

No, no, taosterman specifically mentioned the extra vertical bar of empty space on the left, not the horizontal status bar on the bottom.

I would never hate on that status bar, which I love dearly, and displays coins with a dollar sign.

I'm planning out my game now and it's hard to keep stopping when I hit a feature that Mario Maker surely won't have.

...will it?

I mean... why would they support a Minus World? Why?

I'm hoping for some confirmation that we can structure our levels together in some way. If it's just level per level sharing then that's not bad, but it's not what it COULD be.

It has been linked elsewhere, but Miyamoto appeared together with Shinya Arino of Game Center CX and together did some Mario Maker tomfoolery. It gives us a bit more of a peek at some new stuff (conveyer belts, SMB1 Thwomps and Bob-Ombs).

One thing I noticed is that Koopa shells deflect off of Thwomps rather than kill them, don't know if that's a thing we can alter or not. Is that how they behave in the NSMB games?

Here's the entire clip Miyamoto was present for, though it's unsubtitled.

I think so. Thwomps in NSMB are closer to setpieces than enemies.

1:04 You don't ever do this (game?) in front of people, do you?
Miyamoto: That's right, I don't. I sneak in my game time, at night.

1:09 How long has it been since you've played a Mario?
M: I haven't played any recently.

Did you see Arino's levels?
M: Yes
What did you think?
M: They were terrible

M: They were bullying [The player]
A: But that's what Mario's all about, isn't it?
M: Well, yeah

They sit down to play Arino's levels (1:50)

M: Oh! Coins! Coins!
(Kore...yarutumoridesuyo, I can't catch what he's saying, context implies that he's saying something like I could do this all day! as in, collect coins, that's an educated guess though)
A: You want to just stay here and get coins forever, right?

2:30

2:43: M: I'm going to do this carefully (bops giant koopa)

2:58 M (man, M is hard to hear): This jump is no good, is it? (this is a guess)
A: He's stuck!

3:21: You have one try left.
M: I get 3 tries?
A: Yes, it's 3 tries. Because this is the first installment in the series! (?)

A: The turtle's up next! Now, what do you do when there are lots of enemies in a row?
(M kicks it into the row of enemies and gets several 1-ups)
A: That's it!
A: Once you've kicked the shell, things speed up!

Miyamoto asks for and receives one more chance, saying, "I get it now"
4:10

A: You put me on the spot! If Shigeru-chan asks me for one more chance, I just have to give it to him, right?

4:40 What do you think?
M: This here? Well, this is a game you are supposed to play again and again...I'd like to play it some more.
A: You don't get sick of it, do you?
M: It bothers me to give up.

Arino then tries to demonstrate the level ("This is how you do it") then dies immediately. Then Miyamoto asks him to trade off the controller, and dies again.

6:20, the springboards: M: You're using the springboards well!
A: You don't usually see this, do you?
M: That's right. You can do this because you can put them wherever you want to.

6:50 So, what did you think now that you've had another look at Arino's level?
M: It's terrible!

A: Is it terrible in a fun way?
M: Yeah, it's fun!

Have we seen 8-bit Mario ride a Yoshi yet? Please tell me that this is possible and that pictures exist already.

Until now, I had some doubts on whether Mario Maker would live up to the content of unofficial fan engines and rom hacks. Clearly, there's tons more here than I thought. You can tell how you wouldn't get something like this without the backing of a whole bunch of artists and programmers.

Pretty much. I was expecting only SMB1 graphics and physics. I figured they might allow for sprites from other games, but not the level of customisation I'm seeing here.

Not that I have any faith in my ability to design levels, but just being able to play stuff like TT's levels without a PC would be fantastic.

That's exactly the "level design as comedy" thing that Kayin was going on about when he made I Wanna Be The Guy: Gaiden.

I don't think that's out but there are some "devolved" enemies in the video, like Wigglers in SMB3 form. I think it's a good bet to expect Yoshi to show up in SMB1 and 3 styles, though.

Have the various games' physics been talked about yet? It doesn't look like 8-bit Mario can ground pound, but obviously Modern Mario can. I imagine before beginning each level you'll have to select a play style for that level to function in?

Considering that the Clown Car shows up in the SMB3 level and the SMB1 has boos, there almost certainly is a way to get Yoshi in them. No concrete evidence though I suppose

The SMB1 level was definitely not using SMB1 physics, for what it's worth; you don't get a full jump from bouncing off an enemy in SMB1 physics.

I don't think I could bring myself to complain if there's no option for true SMB1 physics, because frankly SMB3 and SMW are Just Better in that regard.

All this really needs now is a way to string levels together to make a proper 'game' and it will be fantastic.

I mean, it's already pretty dang fantastic, and has come a long way since it was first previewed last year, but still. If it lacks the ability to somehow put together levels into a proper game or 'episode' or what have you it won't quite be all it can be.

But hey, we now live in an age where Nintendo patches and updates their games, so maybe that can come later if it's not in at launch.
