Every time you play, then switch into editing, you can see a translucent shadow trail of where Mario jumped and ran during your last playthrough. This makes it incredibly easy to tweak the distances and heights of your platforms, pits, and enemy placement.
If you can string together levels rather than just sharing a level at a time, I am sold.

The video showed the graphics going back and forth between SMB and NSMB, so I'm wondering if the physics change as well, including Mario's abilities like triple jumping and wall jumps.

This'd also be a great way for Nintendo to nickel and dime players with DLC packs of new enemies and objects, because fuck me if I wouldn't buy 'em.

(I would buy them. To clarify.)

AHHHH HA HA HA HAH A HAH HA!!

I fully expect this to be a puzzle game in addition to a level maker: Create a borked level and have your buddies figure out neat ways to fix them up via the editor.

From the features that have been listed, I hope they add a mode where you can have a CPU controlled Mario, and you have to edit the level in real-time to stop him from reaching the goal.

Stopping would be as easy as a wall. Or a massive hole.

Alternately: In a perfect dream world, we would also get new NES-style sprites for 8-bit Mario wall jumps. (To toggle on/off, of course.)

There's no reason he couldn't pull a spring out of his butt. Or you could limit the number of times you can edit a thing.

But yes, helping Mario along is probably a better idea than hindering him (if not as funny).

I keep being excited about this game, and then I remember that it isn't for the 3DS for mysterious and stupid reasons.

This is what I'm expecting, and I hope people put it to good use. It has an almost Wario Ware feel to it from what I've seen.

Check out this extended clip

E: A really fun example of a puzzle level starts around 11 minutes

It seems nobody on the show floor figured out where Totaka's Song was hidden in the demo. (Of course it was hidden in the demo. They never said so, but it's the truth.)

This uses the physics from SMB2j, which are the same as SMB1 except you can bounce off of enemies.

I was trying to figure out what exactly the physics were.

Can't help but think a neat addition would be to allow us to make levels like those in NSMB2 where you get fired from a cannon and basically speedrun the level.

Did anyone ask Nintendo if you'll be able to make bigger levels in the final version? Because that's pretty much my biggest gripe with what we've seen so far. The levels just seem to be awfully small.

Apparently, the physics will stay 8bit regardless of the visual style you're chosing. They also want to offer more styles than just SMB and NSMBU out of the box.

I wonder if you'll be able to put a "switch block" in a level than changes the graphical style while playing. That would be a neat feature (even though it would likely get old incredibly fast if people start abusing it like crazy...).

Not having played Parallel Worlds (I remember that I downloaded it when it came out, but I never got around playing it), I'd really love to know what you are referring to.

From the videos, Mario Maker does look really neat. The pessimistic side of me does agree that the levels seen thus far were indeed a little bit scarce as far as features, length, and real meat went, but I think it's still a bit too early in the development cycle to be certain that's how versatile the final level builder is going to be.

I had an idea like this a while back, though my version followed the Mega Man Powered Up template a bit more: Release a version of Super Mario Bros. updated with modern graphics along with "classic" and "New" control styles, then include an editor mode which allows you to create/share your own levels.

The idea being that there would be a solid, unique version of a classic game there to serve as a basis/learning tool, and a "basic" set of enemies/environments/power-ups to use to develop new levels.

Then, of course, you could follow with similar versions of SMB3, SMW, maybe even SMB2 that do the same thing, gradually expanding players' horizons in the same way as those who made the original games.

Parish did a great interview with Takashi Tezuka about Mario Maker. Physics are closer to NSMB than SMB, and are consistent between graphic styles. They're planning to let you use graphic styles other than Mario (!). No details on how level sharing works. When Parish asked if you can make interconnected levels, Takashi said "I'm thinking about it."

Think this is worth mentioning:

The Maker now can use SMB3 and SMW styles, and seems to have a LOT more options than when it was first unveiled.

I'm quite a bit more excited for this now!

If there's a world map creator the tragedy will be that I'm standing here holding out money and there's nobody here to take it.

I think that just sold me. I hope there's a way to turn off the shading, though — it kind of takes me out of the game.

Still no word on that yet, though in a different video that had Miyamoto talking about it he mentioned using it to make your own Mario 'Game', rather than just levels. So unless that was a quirky mistranslation that might imply that you could make something a lot more structured than it first appeared.

I'll hold out hope for something like that, especially if it allows secret exits and levels, but I wouldn't be surprised if at most we'll just be able to string levels together ala SMB1.

Shading's the wrong word, I mean the drop shadow behind all of the foreground elements, giving them all sort of a feel of floating in front of the background.

And to prevent exactly that from happening and scarring Lil'Timmy for life, levels must be shared using a 512 digit friend code or uploaded to Nintendo central servers, where they will be greenlighted after a short period of no more than two weeks

(I know those scenarios won't happen now, but would they have sounded that crazy during the Wii years?)

Pretty sure they already said there wouldn't be any online sharing at E3.

Tezuka-san has acknowledged that sharing levels will be key, though how it will be applied is still in flux, perhaps explaining Nintendo's hesitation in sharing any detail. Tezuka-san is clear in stating that it's on the agenda, however — "Sharing with friends is really the whole point of making levels".
pretty vague, but there's hope

Disney Infinity lets you play any level made by one of your friends or levels that Disney pre-screened. I imagine the best we could hope from Mario Maker would be similar. It probably won't be as open as LittleBigPlanet, so I doubt we'd be able to make a Talking Time Bros. to share with the world.

EDIT: Oh, wait, QR codes. That's probably what they'll use.

I don't mind it - it would just be cool to have a toggle so the levels could aesthetically resemble the originals in every respect.

(I'd be willing to give up the extra vertical bar of empty space on the left from SMB3, I guess)
