I am indescribably disappointed that these exists no videos on Youtube of Dry Bones set to Chumbawamba. You have failed me yet again, Internet.

Didn't have any of this batch quite on my list, but these are some good not-Marios.

Dry Bones is a cool dude.

Culex is a great boss-in-the-wrong-game... but now I really wanna know the original JP sprite joke about him.

I didn't even know about Mr. L before but I looked up more images and he's a good L, yes. Tho Loki's pic is the best.

Also Weird Mario. Yes. He's good at hanging out behind doors.

s.
This is the whole joke.

Quote:
Culex claims to be a timeless overlord made of pure evil. As a two-dimensional being, he is perplexed by the three-dimensional forms of Mario's party, so he demands a fight to try and understand them. Upon defeat, he recognizes the party's strength and positive energy, and he and his pocket dimension disappear until the day he finally gains the solidity of the third dimension.

Listen, yes, I did vote for the FF4 boss theme, and I'm not going to apologize for it

I did forget to vote for lanky Mario, though

I'm pretty sure weird Mario and Dry Bones were not on my list. They are both very good characters and deserve a place in the top 50. So does Wiggler, which I'm pretty sure also isn't on my list.

I was hoping you'd post this. Also, I'd buy a Paper Mario/Persona crossover on Day Minus One

Weird Mario is the first character I regret not putting on my list.

Except he's technically Mario, so I guess it evens it out.

I'm honestly surprised the joke of the thread titles wasn't "No Culex".

It does my heart sad to see Weird Mario didn't rank.

It does my heart glad to see that someone else likes him about as much as I do.

I guess that was my excuse. I don't count powered-up forms as alternative characters, so I tended not to put them down unless there was some significant gameplay or story component to the change

You know Dry Bones is a big deal because Bowser started biting his style.

One of these days I'll play Super Mario RPG past the first area. The first non-tutorial boss battle got my ass handed to me.

Is Weird Mario and Lanky Mario the same Mario? I've only ever heard him called Lanky Mario.

If Dr. Mario and Baby Mario are different characters, I think weird Mario can be his own character too.

Yes. Weird Mario is the official name, though you'll only see it in-game if you enter one of the codes from the manual.

Dry Bones was one of my picks.

Here are a couple of relevant articles that talk about or feature it:

I don't know how accurate it is but here's a translation.

(Side note: Google confusion has just taught me that Culex is also a genus of mosquitoes.)

#46 (tie) Geno
First Appearance: Super Mario RPG 1996
83 points, 3 nominations

Somebody broke the rule.

So I fucked up this drawing. I inked on the wrong layer and by the time I caught the mistake there was no way to fix it. I was resigned to starting over when I thought, hey! Geno sucks! I ain’t wasting effort on his puppet ass. So here’s your reward TT, a half finished Geno. It’s all the love he deserves.

Why is Geno bad? Let’s take a look:

He’s a self-serious “cool bro” in a fun and lighthearted whimsical game.
He uses guns and gunlikes, all self-seriously and cool, while his contemporaries are rocking turtle shells and chain-chomps.
His aloof manner has endeared him far past his sell-by date. “Geno for Smash” anyone?
He is Mario’s Shadow the Hedgehog.
He’s also a freaking puppet. A puppet people! A puppet with curls! How did second-rate pinocchio ever get the labeled cool?

I’m exaggerating for effect. I get it. I mean, I was fourteen once too. Geno was my boy. But then I put away such childish things and found enlightenment. The real cool dude of SMRPG, I realized, isn’t some “bad ass puppet,” but a little frog who’s lost his coin.

#46 (tie) Wart
First Appearance: Super Mario Bros. 2 1988
83 points, 5 nominations

Now here’s a guy who deserves a revival. Wart is the frog king of the dreamland of SubCon, which he conquered using a dream machine. Mario fed him his veggies, thus saving SubCon. But it was all a dream so it doesn’t count. Or does it?

Mario 2 doesn’t make sense, but Wart is a perfectly cromulent baddy. It would be nice to give Bowser a break one of these days. Wart also made an appearance in Link’s Awakening which is also a dream. Maybe Wart isn’t a frog at all, but instead a rather green tapir.

Bonus: #244 Sniper Bill
First Appearance: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga 2003
14 points, 1 nomination

Sniper Bill is a random encounter in Bowser’s Castle near the end of Mario and Luigi 1. Seemingly unremarkable, the nomination caught my eye when jbear pointed out that it’s a bullet with a gun.

That’s perfect and beautiful on its own, but further investigation reveals that it’s not just any old gun, but a Super Scope, the most maligned of light-based technologies. How does he even fire it? He’s got entirely the wrong body shape.

But really, bullets shouldn’t be firing guys. What’s next, hamburgers that eat people?

Geno the puppet is improved if you pretend he's voiced by Geno from Comedy Bang-Bang
