So I was wondering what the hell happened to Tuner, and one of the reasons it's not updated in a few months is this

I've recommended it earlier in this thread, but check out Switched On Pop if you haven't — it's similar to Tuner, updates on the dot every two weeks, and has much more of a personable, conversational touch. I'm glad to hear Tuner isn't dead, though.

Yeah, if you like Tuner, you might enjoy Sound Show, but while Tuner is a lot more about music theory nerdery, Sound Show is something of a mental floss but for noise and such

but yeah both the Tuner guys show up a few times in different episodes

I only recently discovered the Dirtbag Left, but CTH is probably the funniest and most politcally resonant podcast I've listened to, if you can stand how vicious it is. That Call of Cthulhu adventure was incredible.

I think I said it before in the Pol thread but Chapo, Cum Town, et al are the real counterpoint to right wing media. They have the viciousness that Maddow, et al either lack or forgo.

The line "I may not be Dale Earnhardt, but I smashed into the fucking wall because I couldn't turn left," saved my fuckin soul in the days after 11/9.

Way to reply to a month old post, but I just listened to this one and it set my heart-a-singing.

My zest for Comedy Bang Bang seems to hinge on how infrequently the guests break into song.

That's a sell! My only hesitation:

On a scale of 1 to FYAD how often do these dudes throw vulnerable populations under the bus to score leftist iconoclast zingers, because I ran out of patience for that schtick years ago

Chapo is actually really good about that. Biederman (who's Jewish) uses a really grating mega-nebbish voice for Jared Kushner jokes, but there's a big line marked "antisemitism" that he's conscious never to cross. They're conscious about punching up. I think a lot of the *-phobic reputation came from not giving a shit when people pointed out that the Dem apparatchiks they were roasting also happened to be minorities.

Cowardly weasel words: I haven't done a close listen to their full archive and I never will because who the fuck has the time for that, so idk if they went full FYAD in like episode three.

Cum Town is 100% a FYAD thread, but IIRC Nick Mullen was a FYAD so you're getting what you pay for. It's also a straight up comedy deal, not so much for The Dialectic.

That's reassuring, on the first count. I'll give it a listen at some point.

I think my assumptions about their punching habits came from twitter (shit)heads who moved in similar circles.

I get you. Some of those cats got really weird, or really mean. Then you've got, like, Larry Website who became really earnestly Christian and community-centered. 2016 wore a lot of people down to their component parts and, like always, some of them were made of good stuff and some of them weren't.

I've been going back and listening through the whole Chapo archive. Re-litigating the late primary and election is sort of painful, but it's worth it for the Chapo Reading Series. Harshing Baseball Crank and making fun of that one time William F. Buckley Jr. fucked Ross Douthat is timeless.

Started listening to Hello from a Magical Tavern , and it's making a pretty good first impression. Feels kind of like the better bits of Comedy Bang Bang, with the host having a very improvisational interview with a rotating cast of weird guests, just they're all guests from a fantasy kingdom. Seems to be an overarching plot going on in the background too, but I haven't listened to enough to see if it's going anywhere.

Episodes are short enough that I can binge quite a few every night so it shouldn't take long to come to a concrete opinion. Enjoying it so far though.

you could possibly interpret it as homophobic when, say, he describes John Podesta as a "cum-eating freak," but it's not really intended that way I don't think.

I was just listening to ep 27, the one just after the DNC with Dan O'Sullivan, and it's pretty insightful I think.

I think Christman gives himself too much credit for "knowing" Trump would win, but the bro pair interview fuckin nailed the alt right as a mass of enraged, disaffected stupids around a core of highly intelligent, motivated white nationalists.

e: Of course then later Angela Nagel pointed out the "alt-light/alt-right" divide. A finer point on the above insight.

I laughed really hard when Amber on Chapo told a story of some kid coming up to her and asking if you can be a good socialist and still listen to Cum Town

99% Invisible has about one more episode to go before I'm convinced they've switched to being a political podcast which is barely even tangentially about design.

You're right, but I also super don't mind because they've been keeping the quality level high. It's like a less-depressing This American Life that occasionally talks about architecture or graphic design.

My latest subscribe is Retail Nightmares. It's a humour podcast wherein the two co-hosts interview a person each week about their retail experiences (and other stuff). Regular segments include "The Last You Used a Microwave", "Your Favourite Grape", and "Puppo of the Week", where everyone talks about their cute animal (sometimes person) of the week.

It's pretty silly, which I dig. Plus the co-hosts are women, and I listen to way too many podcasts that end up being dudes all the time. And it's local, which is pretty cool for any Vancouverites out there.

Very nearly caught up on Magic Tavern (still enjoying it, but cutsie references to fantasy pop culture things have lost a chunk of their appeal), and only now, like fifty episodes later, did I pick up on the significance of why the entrance to Evil Foon is Chick Fil-ete.

Way to go, Octo. He who laughs last, laughs best!

I've been catching up on Chapo and their interview with Ricky Rawls was amazing. I especially liked his analysis of how and when to argue with a white supremacist, where the guy kept sending him lists of things that white people had invented until Rawls said, "OK... well what's the last great thing you did?"

Alex Pareene on Chapo TrapHouse was a precious gift to the world, but mostly it made me wish that Alex Pareene had his own regular podcast.

Also, as a big fan of James Adomian, I could listen to his Gorka bits pretty much forever... In related news, his standup bit on gay-coded villains is hilarious:

Good new episode of Song Exploder with Damon Albarn.

I'm still working my way through Star Wars Minute, definitely the longest archive binge I've ever embarked upon - even longer than Buzz Out Loud. Ah, that takes me back to playing FFXII... But I digress. I like their conspiracy theories about the force being a hoax. Although once they reach the prequels the enthusiasm drops off noticeably.

Aww man, we're getting close to the season finale of Welcome to Nightvale.

That means the next month or two are going to focus on gripping supernatural narrative being resolved instead of Weird Town Local News.

Y'aint playing to your greatest strengths, Guys! You do one of those things a whole lot better than the other!

Anyone else losing interest in Duckfeed.tv podcasts?

In the last year or so I've found myself deleting the podcasts unlistened to. Thier latest episode of WOFF really highlighted how different the network is and after listening to it and thinking about what they said and where they're going I realized I just wasn't interested anymore.

Still two great guys but I just find that what interests them and what interests me no longer overlaps.

I ended up unsubbing and unpatreoning.

I should reflect more often on what in my life is no longer bringing me any value.
