I disagree with everybody regarding spicing up the main character's design. I feel like his understated appearance helps bring the focus to the alien nature of his surroundings. Plus, that gun is so big and distinct that emboldening the actual human would be too distracting. The game's design seems creepy, yet not overbearing. The player doesn't need anymore 'tude, it'd seem out of place.

EDIT: Jesus, I should really read these the first time around. And the second.

This reminds me of Vigilance on Talos V, one of the first games to try this angle not long after Super Metroid had been released.

Talos V turned out to be a terrible game. This one already looks much more interesting.

I think the pixel art looks good and I see no reason to change it. In fact, I can't help but wonder if you were influenced by some of the former Westwood employees who still work at Petroglyph, since they used to be so good at pixel art in the old days.

I'm probably going to give his shirt some color because he gets lost in the background too easily. One person on NeoGAF (or is it NEOGaf? Anyway.) actually thought he WAS the gun because the only color above his waistline is his face and hair.

Yeah, the main character doesn't need to look more unique; the story apparently goes that he's a normal guy who just wakes up in this sci-fi nightmare zone. Lightening him up a bit so he doesn't get lost in the environments would probably be sufficient.

Right, but "normal guy" and "distinct look" aren't mutually exclusive concepts. The whole generic dark clothes thing strikes me as weird on three different levels, really:

If you want to look at it purely from a perspective of realism, the more someone feels like a plain ol' ordinary guy, the more they tend to focus on self-expression via wardrobe.

If you want to look at it from the point of design practicality, well, right here, we have a character blending into the background. The shirt more than anything, but that's usually blocked by the gun. Being able to clearly identify where the top of your head and bottom of your feet are tends to be pretty important for eyeballing hit detection and jumps and such, but they're respectively a black hat and brown shoes, blending into the background.

And if you want to look at it from an identifiability concept, it's nice to have something distinct and unique to any character. Like, say, let's say someone really likes something and wants to dress up as the main character for halloween. If it's a Mario game, great. Red hat, mustache, overalls, everyone recognizes them. Homestuck? Shirt or hoodie with whichever character's logo on it, you're pretty much good to go. Han Solo? Long sleeved, deep collared shirt, black vest. Might need a little more attention to detail to sell it, but hey. The main character from this game... if you aren't actively holding the gun, no matter how close you get the details, it's not going to look like a costume. This sort of concern is more practical by the way if you want to toss this character into some future game as a cameo.

I don't! Not ever! And you see that I already agree with your second point -- I imagine it'd be tough to guess in the heat of combat where his hitbox is thanks to the dark extremities his sprite's sporting at the moment.

As far as your third point goes, I think Trace looks quite unique enough without creeping into the mohawked, jean-jacketed territory Thorn suggests. He's got rolled-up sleeves, gloves, a beret or knit cap. In close-ups he may have further detail; it's hard to tell at this size (which also renders ideas like a logo tee kind of unworkable for his in-game sprite).

I would like to see some concept art of the character, so I can tell for certain whether I'm reading the sprite correctly. But I think that apart from his muted palette Trace really doesn't look bland.

This is probably going to sound weird, and maybe disappointing, but knowing what Trace's full-sized head looks like, I can only see the top of his sprite as brown hair, a shadowed region underneath, and sideburns (one brown pixel in size with a black border).

On another site I was asked if he's wearing a miner's cap, presumably with his face bring the light on the front of the cap?

Uh...did I miss this? I thought it was only for XBIG!

Also I like Metal Slug which is like Contra. And I like Metroid. So I should like this!

Looks smashing! It's as though you were looking at the bubbly areas in Norfair and thought "nah, this isn't creepy enough".

I watched someone play this for a few minutes at PAX East, and it looked really cool. I hope the PC version is coming soon.

Yes, I dare say I am psychologically prepared to play such a thing as this.

Now, does PSN update in the mornings or is it still only in the evening?

As great as this looks I'm not going to buy a PS4 for it.

To be fair, looking over my budget, I'm not going to be buying a PS4 for any reason...

So, I'm hopeful that someday it comes to Steam.

It may take a while, but damn this looks right up my alley!

(It also helps that Transistor and Mercenary Kings are on there too and Witness is coming soon. And I was kind of looking for an excuse anyway...)

I was pissed when I saw this on the PSN sale last month and couldn't buy it yet.

Time to fix that when I get home.

This looks neat. "Metroidvania" isn't a selling point for me anymore, but the environments have a dark density that's really appealing, and I haven't played that many new 2D games in the past few years. Is it only for PSN on PS4s?
