Default My upcoming "Metroidvania" indie game, Axiom Verge

Hello talking time people, my name is Tom Happ; I'm a game developer at Petroglyph Games, but in my spare time I've started developing my own indie game, Axiom Verge, that I hope to release for XBLIG and PC sometime next year.

Here's the trailer for your youtubing pleasure:
http://youtu.be/9FNZTmLwm7I

And my site: http://www.axiomverge.com

And a random screenshot:

Comments and criticism are welcome!

Thanks,
Tom

It looks neat! My only thought is more of a marketing one. There's a few moments in the video where the beat of the music is aaaalmost synced to the action of the main character. It's a little jarring!

Ah, yeah, I did my best, but I gotta say - it's really hard to make captures and get them to line up! Some of these I had to play over and over just to get what I thought would be an ordinary shot. The thing is, I believe it breaks the youtube link if I try to update it, so it's kind of permanent, now.

The main character seems rather tiny, but otherwise I'm really impressed. Its rare to see spritework of that quality out of an XBLIG.

This seems less like a Metroidvania and more like a Controid, but either way it looks pretty sweet. I don't have an XBox, but I don't think it'd be hard to convince me to pick up the PC version.

Uh...did I miss this? I thought it was only for XBIG!

Also I like Metal Slug which is like Contra. And I like Metroid. So I should like this!

I wouldn't worry about it! Your game looks neat enough that it doesn't matter

This looks really cool. It's got a lot of atmosphere, and the sprite work looks super slick.

The only real piece of advice I can offer is that it looks like it wears some of its influences a little too prominently on its sleeve. Those structures in the floor tiles in the screenshot you've attached look just like Zebetites from the Metroid games, there are those bubbly-looking tiles in the trailer that look like they were pulled from Norfair, and the flying enemies look like they were taken straight out of Metroid as well. I think it's awesome to be proud of your influences, but I think those specific examples cross the line from "inspired by" and into "ripped straight out of."

Looks really good. The only bad thing I can see is that I'm already hating the short range weapons. I don't want to get close to baddies ewwww >:(

I'm looking forward to this.

Looks a bit like Dark Void Zero. Do my eyes deceive me or is there a connection?

Yes, I dare say I am psychologically prepared to play such a thing as this.

Now, does PSN update in the mornings or is it still only in the evening?

As great as this looks I'm not going to buy a PS4 for it.

To be fair, looking over my budget, I'm not going to be buying a PS4 for any reason...

So, I'm hopeful that someday it comes to Steam.

It is coming to Vita and PC, but not until later.

Oooooh, I saw this at PAX too, and also saw that it's trending on Twitter right now. Nice work!

Man, I want this on PC pretty badly. Hopefully it'll pop up on GOG as well as Steam soon.

It may take a while, but damn this looks right up my alley!

(It also helps that Transistor and Mercenary Kings are on there too and Witness is coming soon. And I was kind of looking for an excuse anyway...)

I was pissed when I saw this on the PSN sale last month and couldn't buy it yet.

Time to fix that when I get home.

This looks neat. "Metroidvania" isn't a selling point for me anymore, but the environments have a dark density that's really appealing, and I haven't played that many new 2D games in the past few years. Is it only for PSN on PS4s?

This looks great. But why is it that every next-gen game I want could easily run on last-gen hardware?

Because moving to simpler and more open architecture was the undocumented actual feature we got with the PS4/XBone.

I'll be playing XeoDrifter on my 3ds (or Steam) to hold me over until Axiom Verge makes its way.

I don't think it will hold me over long though.

I bought this when I saw that the PS+ discount ends soon. Is it fun for someone who has no nostalgia for 8-bit games and the first Metroid?

Yes.

I didn't have an NES growing up*, so I missed out on the original Metroid and Zelda, and now find them too obtuse to enjoy.

I have still been enjoying Axiom Verge.

* Although I did have a Game Boy and somehow convinced myself I enjoyed Metroid II at the time.

The artwork and effects are lovely. I don't even really like Metroidvanias but I'd play this just to experience the cool levels.

Aside from the graphical style and the glitch mechanics, it's a lot closer to Super Metroid.

This was a good game. The main flaw is that the protagonist is a million times less cool than Samus. I mean, Samus is the coolest, but this guy is super lame.

I've been loving this game so far, so much that I'm debating writing a thing about it. I should probably finish it and confirm my hypothesis first though. I'm assuming with 51% items gathered and 72% map cleared I'm thinking I'm getting there.

As far as I know, that's still in the works.
