I have tried opening a banana from the nub end and I always end up squashing the meat.

Default I'm not convinced that most of you stem-peelers have ever tried starting at the tip

Aye. You just take that part with the peel as you open it, in one motion. It's so effortless and I'm so used to doing it that it would be more work to preserve it.

I was raised as a stem peeler, the internet showed me that it was possible to peel from the tip, and ever since then I peel from the tip.

Occasionally (depending on the banana) I'd pull back the stem but it wouldn't separate from the peel, it would just bend back and mush up the top bit of the banana, and that was unfortunate. I hated this. Because of this, I would always (when possible) slice a little notch in the base of the stem with a knife before opening it. This dirties a dish and is inconvenient.

TKFlash is eating some nasty ass bananas. There should be no gunk or bad flavor at the tip of the banana. Even if there is, it's trivial to pinch that bit off with the tip as you peel it. Try it!

Also, I'll eat a banana that is solid green, right off the store shelves, hasn't had any time to sit at home and ripen up more, before I'll even consider eating a banana that's even close to over-ripe. Over-ripe is too sweet for my tastes, and it means there will probably be soft brown bruised spots on the fruit inside. That shit's nasty. I usually buy only the greenest bunches, and still usually end up throwing out one or two because they went too brown for my tastes.

I do not like banana flavor in smoothies. Yes, this makes it annoying to make smoothies, because most smoothie recipes use bananas. I don't often make smoothies at home.

Banana bread I can take or leave really. It's better than throwing bananas away, sure, but it's no pumpkin bread.

While I'm at it, every banana flavored candy is garbage, garbage for the dumpster.

(I am not the world's biggest fan of bananas in general, obviously, but that doesn't stop me from having opinions about peeling them.)

This cannot possibly be true because circus peanuts are banana-flavored and they are the best candy.

That's almost right, you almost got it, except circus peanuts are vile garbage, like if packing styrofoam caught cancer, and banana runts are too. Other than that, though, spot on.

I just bought a banana for 20 cents so I could try out this tip-opening thing. It was a little tricky to open; I had to push under the brown thing with my thumbnail to get it started (pinching the tip did nothing) and then it peeled back like normal.

TK Flash was right about the mushy banana poo, though. It separated from the peel so I had to scrape it off before I took the first bite. I think I'll stick with the stem method.

Try this: don't crack the Blossom End of the plantain berry with Hulklike fingers which are unable to gently crack the Blossom End and equally smoothly peel the husk in perfect twain, eliminating gunk entirely.

I just use my thumbnail to make a tiny slice at the base of the stem.

I'm with you on banana flavoring, though, it's almost always vile.

Protip: the reason why banana flavoured stuff tastes so weird is that they're supposed to taste like Gros Michel bananas, which almost went extinct in the fifties and were pretty much replaced altogether by the completely-different-tasting Cavendish bananas.

My first draft of that sentence included the parenthetical: (no I won't slice a notch in the base with my thumbnail, are you crazy? And get banana gunk embedded deep under my nails? Not in a million years.) I forgot that I deleted it, so your response came as a surprise!

Like, I'm only notching the peel, not all the way into the edible part, so it rarely leaves anything on or under my nail. Maybe it would if it were a soft over-ripe banana, but I wouldn't be eating that anyway.

And yeah, I'm aware of the Gros Michel debacle (which apparently we may be close to repeating - monocultures are bad, kids). But I guess I'm glad we lost those if they really tasted like "banana flavor". Yech.

I peel them from the stem, but I would peel from the tip if I wanted to create a cartoon banana peel and was using the insides for something else.
