Default What is the best (unironic, honest-to-gosh) post

I think we need a distinction between best posts and "best" posts.

Quote:
Let's pause a moment and just think about that. Men—adult men—have asked me to defend my knowledge of and right to be a fan of My Little motherfucking Pony. My first fandom, the fandom that is arguably responsible for getting me into epic fantasy (not kidding), the franchise that I have publicly credited with teaching me how to plot long-term. A franchise that was, at least originally, aimed exclusively at little girls who enjoyed ponies and hair-play. I think that all fandoms should be for everyone, and I love that My Little Pony has finally found a male audience, but are you kidding here? Are you seriously telling me that the second men discover something I have loved since I was four years old, I suddenly have to pass trivia exams to keep considering myself a fan? Because if that's the way things are going, I want to hear the Sea Pony song right fucking now.

Took me a while to figure out that the person talking about my little pony was in fact a woman and not a shrill Internet manchild, and wondering what you were up to starting this thread with that post

But the problem with this line of thinking is that it opens up a whole other can of unironic gendered worms. Why is it less shrill that it's a woman? Because the person sounds pretty angry and confrontational either way. Is it because the fandom in question is "meant" for girls, giving them more authority over it?

These are not attacks (because I understand that most people think my posts are meant as personal attacks) but legitimate questions over how people are percieving the first quote.

hello I have built my entire persona around the consumption of this cartoon but not that cartoon, which is meaningless and crass and commerical and not at all like Fish Police, that bedrock of western culture

That's cool that you can Super Snark Out about it but you're still not addressing gender.

geek misogyny is a known quantity and a woman complaining about being pressured out of her peer group's pony discussions by grown ass men scratching the wiry unkempt neck kudzu and talking about how fluttershy makes them feel loved can be safely assumed to have a point

E: fuck it, I don't actually care about anything ponies lol

Anything I was trying to say was starting to read like mens rights activist bullshit, and that's so far from what I actually believe as to be comical, but since I have zero benefit of the doubt on this forum I might as well just not say any more

The larger context is that it's part of a rant about "fake girl geek" gatekeeping. For bronies to pull that shit on women with this particular property, especially women who were old enough to have loved the original incarnation of MLP as children, is absurd. MLP was the gateway to reading/watching more adult fantasy for lots of girls, including the op, me, and, not-so-incidentally, Lauren Faust.

My reaction was simply that, not being a Pony watcher myself, almost all of my exposure to it is from Internet rubbernecking at Bronies, Who Are Awful. I had to readjust my context to realize that MLP was a) a thing a long time ago, b) enjoyed then mainly by little girls instead of nerdy adult men, and c) realize that those little girls are now grown up and probably enjoy the new show too, and d) actually talk about it. THEN I realized that said grown-little-girl-fan-of-original-MLP was being taken to task by said adult men for not being a real fan, which is already the lollest thing with this added layer of dumb.

It would be like my younger cousin trying to tell my dad he's not a real Star Trek fan because he can't answer trivia from the new JJ Abrams movie, despite following the series in all its incarnations since before the little bastard was born.

If your cousin did that would one of us be allowed to slap him upside the head on your behalf? Or should we merely document the transgression, notify you and then you will perform the slapping when you can?

Apparently the proper response is just to post about it in the Pit of Flames

Also that was, luckily, a purely hypothetical situation, and not one based on reality or likelihood. Phew!

Yes, exactly, and I thought it was painfully obvious what the original post said because I am a grown-up little girl who can sing the Sea Ponies song from memory because I watched the everloving shit out of that special on VHS when I was a kid.

I forgot that everyone else was going to assume it was being written by a brony. My bad.
