At the height of its popularity, it was something like one every 9-12 months as I vaguely recall? I remember going into Best Buy and seeing something like a half dozen Everquest boxes on the shelves at once in the PC software aisles.

Default apologies to Jeff Easley

Wow. So not only did Keith Parkinson and Larry Elmore do covers for EQ, but they even got Clyde Caldwell to do the strategy guide!

The holy frickin' trinity of D&D artists.

Pretty sure Norrath was just Brad McQuaid's homebrew D&D world, so...

So, the elf lady with the huge knockers holding the Serpentor staff: Is her skin blue, is that part of her suit, or did she have an incredible mishap with the eye shadow?

Her skin is blue. Evidence: this is what a High Elf looks like in EQ without any equipment.

First expansion had a new race and very large new continent, higher level cap, I think maybe some of the first planes, decent number of new spells, lots of new dungeons (for every level, as the Iskari were hated on the mainland so you needed to be able to level one from level one in their homeland).

Second one was pretty phoned in. Island of Ice Giants, don't even think there was any sub 60 content there?

Velious would kick the shit out of you if you were sub-55 or so. I mostly remember it as a place to farm Ry'gorr armor for my lowbie alts. Well, that and reverse kiting with my necro.

The Russian one's funny because I recognize that cover from my dad's copy of Asimov's Robots and Empire. Also, Harry Seldon's chilling on the spine for some reason.

What happened to the reasonably-sensibly dressed Teutonic Knight? Looks like he disappeared around the time they went to space Egypt.

The only character in that image that's not stiff is the leopard rolling on the floor near the bottom.

Even the tiger that just spilled his bowl of chilli is all tense.

Clearly the le*pard is actually in charge. The big dude on the throne is just a figurehead.

Bodyguards to the leopard.

The one on the right can even eat chilli with his distressingly human hand-like paw. Surely he can provide both bellyrubs and swordfights in a pinch.

OK. Now here's my next question - what the hell are the two blond women staring/looking at?

The bobcats up on the walls, employed by the le*pard as snipers in case anyone gets any funny ideas when the tigers are napping after a big bowl of chili.

When a le*pard employs other felines to guard it then is it still even a le*pard anymore?

The woman on the right's posture is impressive both in that holding that position for more than, say, a second would no doubt be excruciatingly painful, but there's some kind of Escher thing going where her legs are simultaneously roughly parallel but her feet are like, one tiger-length apart.

Also wait is Conan Jewish?

Not totally sure, but I think the Hyberborean Age predates Judaism

Conan is Cimmerian, which (in the author's depiction of events) makes him essentially some variety of proto-Celt. Since the Hyborian Age is supposed to be a pre-cataclysmic Earth in the remote past, there are analogues to most of the various races of people somewhere in it. If you're looking for Jewish people in Robert Howard's Conan stories, you'll be looking at the Shemites.

They're... not depicted well. Anyone who isn't white tends not to be depicted very favorably in the Conan stories, sadly. The Kull series, which predates them (both in-universe and in Howard's career) seems better, initially, until you realize that there are no non-white people anywhere in those stories whatsoever.

I mean at least Conan and Kull don't have a magic juju stick given to them by your one black shaman friend...

Shit, I've gone too deep down the rabbit hole somehow. I haven't even read any of the Solomon Kane stories, but somehow knew what you were referring to.

Really, the whole Robert Howard fantasy oeuvre is kind of unfortunate. I mean, there are some really terrific stories in there. Even the really blatantly workmanlike ones that either feel like a cheap rehash of older, better-done Howard stories, or the ones that feel like a dry run for something really impressive (Xuthal of the Dusk compared to Red Nails) are readable and fun in a kind of disposable way. But oh my God the casual racism and sexism.
